WARSAW -- Second-ranked James Kenan withstood a late second-half rally and held off No. 7-ranked Wallace-Rose Hill 24-16 at Bill Taylor Field on Friday evening.
The Tigers completed their second consecutive regular season unbeaten in 11 outings, including a 5-0 ledger against Class 1-A Super Six opposition. The Bulldogs (8-3) lost just their second league game in 30 tries since 2001.
Shawn Jones' 1-yard touchdown run just four seconds into the second quarter gave James Kenan a 7-0 lead. Wallace-Rose Hill posted a second-quarter safety and trailed 7-2 at halftime.
"I give a lot of credit to them," said second-year James Kenan coach Ken Avent Jr. "They played great defense, probably the best defense we've gone up against. They did a good job slowing us down."
In the third quarter, the Tigers' Jorge Vazquez successfully converted a 27-yard field goal. Jones and Brandon Satchell added short touchdown runs of 7 and 2 yards to give James Kenan a commanding 24-2 advantage.
Wallace-Rose Hill didn't quit. The Bulldogs posted two fourth-quarter touchdowns, but couldn't pull off the upset before a standing-room-only crowd.
James Kenan lost the total yardage battle 261-191, but recorded several big stops on defense. Two interceptions, a blocked punt and a fumble recovery kept the visitors from spoiling the Tigers' unbeaten season.
"I thought we did a good job making some plays in the second half," said Avent Jr.
Josh Hicks emerged the defensive leader with 11 tackles, seven assists and also had a sack. Josh Dixon finished with two interceptions, five tackles and eight assists.
Alex Monk made seven stops and seven assists, and Derrick Barden added four tackles, five assists, a blocked punt and a sack.
