SOUTHERN PINES -- Jasmine Reeves carded a 36-hole round of 184 and led Eastern Wayne to a fifth-place showing in the N.C. High School Athletic Association Classes 1-A/2-A/3-A women's golf championships.

Paula Webber (195) and Erica Freeman (202) contributed to the Warriors' two-day, three-player total of 581.

"Fifth place ... I'll take that any day," said Eastern Wayne coach Scott Waller. "The wind was brutal on Monday and yesterday, it should have been a little bit better. It was a better scoring day because it was less windy and it warmed up quicker.

"But I think their legs got tired. They're not used to walking 18 holes back-to-back with all those hills."

Southern Wayne finished eighth overall with a team score of 626. Jordan Hill (201), Taylor Scott (216) and Taylor Reaves (219) competed for the Saints, who were making their second appearance in the championships.

It was Hill's fourth trip overall after participating as individual for three consecutive years.

Junior Courtney Gunter of Porter Ridge successfully defended her individual title with a two-day score of 145. Gunter, who had the only even-par round (71) on Tuesday, beat her nearest competitor -- Lauren Kinsman of Union Pines -- by a whopping 11 strokes.

Wilson Fike's Amy Otteson, Union Pines' Amanda D'Ostroph and Salisbury's Allison Lee all tied for third. Otteson led Fike, despite a meet-best 241 on the second day, to its fourth consecutive state runner-up finish as a team.

Union Pines edged Fike 490-494 for the team crown. Salisbury (502) and Charlotte Catholic (568) took third and fourth, respectively. Burlington Williams ended up one stroke behind Eastern Wayne, followed by Southern Lee and Southern Wayne.

Wendy's and the Carolinas Ford Dealers sponsored the two-day event, which was hosted by Longleaf Golf and Country Club.
