HENDERSON -- Wayne Christian gave top-seeded Statesville Christian fits in their opening-round set Friday afternoon, but the Eagles couldn't keep the momentum.

Statesville (27-1 overall) overcame its early butterflies and eliminated Wayne Christian 25-20, 25-13, 25-15 from the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association Class 1-A volleyball playoffs. The Lions defeated Cresset Christian in the championship match on Saturday afternoon at Kerr-Vance Academy.

The Eagles finished the year 8-9 overall.

"We played a highly-skilled team deserving of their number one seed," said Wayne Christian head coach Courtney Chewning. "Our girls came out strong, leading early in the first game (at 18-17) ... when they called timeout.

"They came on to finish the game 25-20. In games two and three, their play proved too much and won the match easily."

Katie Daniels paced the Eagles with four kills, four digs and three service aces. Hope Wright supplied four kills, while Allison Rose collected four digs defensively.

Christian Brogneaux dished out seven assists and contributed two kills.

"Overall, I'm proud of the way we finished the season, and the efforts and hard work of my girls."

Cross country

Magnus ends up 15th overall

CHARLOTTE -- Junior Josh Magnus ended up 15th overall in the season-ending, N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A/2-A meet contested at McAlpine Park.

Magnus ran the 5K course in 17 minutes, 49 seconds. Teammates Justin Brathwaite (82nd, 20:28), NoahKearney (105th, 20:58), Jay Kornegay (118th, 21:32) and Mark Sawyer (144th, 22:25) also contributed to the team score.

The Eagles wound up 16th overall in the team portion of the meet, but emerged the top finishing squad among competing 1-A schools.

On the girls' side, the Eagles' Jennifer Price crossed the finish line 105th with a time of 24:58. Logan Dawson was 11 spots back in 25:22. Christina Foster came in 120th at 25:31, followed by Charity Wright, who took 122nd in 25:37.

Kayla Kennedy concluded the team scoring with a 142nd-place effort of 27:42.

Also running for the Eagles were Katie Alston, Katherine Laramee, Josh Burdett and Nick Sullivan.

Fayetteville Academy claimed the state title in each division. More than 320 runners competed in the championship meet.
