MANTEO -- Spring Creek continued its historic volleyball playoff run with a 15-25, 25-19, 20-25, 25-22, 15-12 victory over Manteo on Thursday evening.

The Gators (16-4 overall) travel to Louisburg on Saturday in the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 1-A eastern semifinals. Match time is 4 p.m.

Kristin Smith keyed Spring Creek's attack with 21 kills, eight blocks and six aces. Ashley Barwick handed out 11 assists, while Brooke Alberston added 10. Tasha Whitfield tallied eight blocks, five kills and an ace.

Dixon averts Eagles

HOLLY RIDGE -- Unbeaten Dixon needed five games to turn back upset-minded Rosewood in their N.C. High School Athletic Association 1-A quarterfinal-round, volleyball match Thursday evening.

The Dogs improved to 20-0 overall with 25-12, 25-17, 18-25, 22-25, 15-5 win. They'll oppose once-beaten Lakewood, which upset Pender, on Saturday.

Taylor Johnson finished with 10 digs, seven kills and five blocks Rosewood, which concluded the year 10-12. Ashley Williams chipped in nine kills, eight digs and two blocks.

Paige Babb had nine assists and seven digs. Jennifer Hall tallied seven digs, two assists and an ace.

JV sports

* Football -- Charles B. Aycock turned back rival Eastern Wayne 16-6 on Thursday night. Shepard Whitfield's one-yard touchdown run and David Gurganus' 12-yard strike to Josh Dixon was all the scoring the Golden Falcons would need. Dixon, Shalando McBride and Davonte Petteway led Aycock's defensive unit. The Golden Falcons (5-4 overall, 3-1 Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference) visit Southern Wayne on Thursday.

Middle schools

* Football -- Norwayne clinched at least a share of the Wayne County Middle School Athletic Conference Division I championship with a 20-6 victory over Dillard on Thursday. A win at home over Rosewood next Thursday, would give Norwayne the victory outright. Willie Sutton rushed for 130 yards and a touchdown for Norwayne. Colin Dubose added a pair of scores on the ground. Hunter Jones made six tackles. A.J. Mundle and Sutton each turned in an interception, and Dubose had a fumble recovery.

* Football -- Grantham eased past Brogden 38-20 on Thursday, capturing the WCMSAC Division II title on Thursday. Keenan Winn turned in another stellar performance for Grantham. Winn had a 50-yard touchdown run, a 40-yard reception for a score and return a fumble 75-yards for a touchdown. Theo Cox added a 5-yard touchdown run and a two-point conversion. Caleb Brown also had a 70-yard interception return for a touchdown. Brogden's Devin Oliver had an 80-yard kickoff return for a score, and also took a screen-pass 70-yards to the endzone. Brogden falls to 6-1 overall, and 3-1 in the conference. Grantham (6-0, 4-0) concludes its season on Thursday when it hosts Dillard.

* Football -- Anthony McKinney had a pair of touchdown runs to lead visiting Mount Olive to a 12-6 win over Greenwood on Thursday. McKinney scored from 21 and eight-yards out. Juan Pearsall added a 47-yard score on a reverse, and also had an interception. Gregory Bullock recovered a fumble for Mount Olive, and Robert Lennox had 10 tackles. Mount Olive concludes its season at Eastern Wayne on Thursday.

* Volleyball -- Norwayne clinched the Wayne County Middle School Division I Conference championship by knocking off visiting Eastern Wayne 25-9, 25-13, 25-16 on Thursday. Conner Davis had 20 service points for Norwayne, and Imari Howell added 13. Brooke Bell, Courtnei Gilbert, Ivy Hartzell and Rachel Jordan all had solid outings for the Cobras. Norwayne (12-0 overall, 5-0 WCMSAC DI) visits Grantham on Monday.

* Soccer -- Eastern Wayne got goals from four different players in a 6-1 defeat of Norwayne on Thursday. Jae Kim, Tyler Brown, Rene Aguliz and Tyler Muehlenthaler each found the back of the net. Brown, Aaron Deb and Steven Taylor all had assists. Eastern Wayne also scored on a Norwayne own goal. Chase Thompson scored on a penalty kick for the Cobras. With the victory, Eastern Wayne clinched the WCMSAC Division I championship. Eastern Wayne (9-2) will host Brogden on Monday. Norwayne falls to 5-6-2.
