WILSON -- A goal in the eighth minute of the match proved to be the difference as Mount Olive fell to Barton 1-0 in Conference Carolinas women's soccer Thursday at Wilson.
The match, which was postponed from Wednesday do to unplayable field conditions, was played in a steady rain on a puddle-filled field.
The loss snapped Mount Olive's seven-match unbeaten streak in conference play and kept the Trojans (7-8-3 overall, 5-2-3 CC) one win away from clinching a home match in the first round of next week's conference tournament. Mount Olive was 4-0-3 in its previous seven conference matches.
Trojan goalkeeper Jenn Sastre followed Sunday's career-high 10-save performance with nine saves Thursday. But Allie Wilkerson put Barton (7-5-4, 7-2-2) ahead to stay. Barton became the third team to clinch a first-round home match, joining Belmont Abbey and Pfeiffer.
Mount Olive concludes its regular season Saturday at Gaffney, S.C., as the Trojans battle Limestone for the fourth and final home spot in the tournament. Match time is 1 p.m.
The winner clinches the No. 4 seed and hosts a first-round contest October 31. The losing team drops to No. 5 or No. 6, pending Queens' match against Erskine Saturday.
The Trojans have been at home for the first round of the tournament in each of the last three years.
