Spring Creek terminates Jamesville

JAMESVILLE -- Spring Creek advanced to the third round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 1-A volleyball playoffs with a 28-26, 25-18, 12-25, 29-27 win at Jamesville on Tuesday.

Junior middle hitter Kristin Smith hammered out 18 kills to go with eight service aces and seven blocks.

Tasha Whitfield finished with 12 kills, eight blocks and an ace. Ashley Barwick passed out 15 assists and tallied a pair of aces. Brooke Alberston had 11 assists and one ace.

The Gators (16-4 overall) travel to Manteo on Thursday.

Jamesville concluded the year 21-2 overall.

Eagles corral Chargers

Wayne Christian brought cross-county rival Wayne Country Day's season to a close with a 25-14, 21-25, 26-24, 25-21 win in the opening round of the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association Class 1-A volleyball playoffs Tuesday evening.

Christian Brogneaux handed out 22 assists for Wayne Christian, and Katie Daniels had 11 kills. Traci Davis finished with eight aces and four kills.

"(We) played one of the most inspired matches of the year," Eagles head coach Courtney Chewning said. "My player's determination and hard work have made a tremendous difference in their ability to finish this game against a rival strong."

The eighth-seeded Eagles face top-seeded Statesville Christian in quarterfinal-round play Thursday afternoon at Kerr-Vance Academy in Henderson. Match time is 1:30 p.m.

Hawks eliminated

LaGRANGE -- Hillsbourgh Orange bumped North Lenoir from the N.C. High School Athletic Association 2-A playoffs on Tuesday evening at Wooten Gymnasium.

Marissa Lanier provided 17 kills for the Hawks, who endured their first loss in 23 outings. Kayla Sutton added 11 kills and eight blocks.

Jordan Hudson handed out 34 assists to go along with six blocks.

Tennis

CBA topples Washington

WASHINGTON -- Charles B. Aycock stayed alive in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3-A dual team women's tennis playoffs by knocking off Washington 6-0 on Tuesday.

Kristen Prosser, Courtney Barnes, Emilee Quinn, Kristen Bennett, Jessica Davis and Ashley Howell were singles winners for the Golden Falcons.

"We played well throughout the lineup. I am proud of our team for advancing to the state quarterfinals," Aycock coach Luke Vail said. "We have come a long way from early in the season. Today was definitely one of our better matches of the season. Playing Eastern Wayne will be a huge challenge, but a great opportunity to play an excellent tennis team with a deep lineup."

The Golden Falcons (14-7 overall) face archrival Eastern Wayne on Tuesday.

Rams move on

SNOW HILL -- Greene Central breezed past Reidsville 7-1 in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 2-A dual-team playoffs on Tuesday.

Puja Patel, Elizabeth McLawhorn, Cally Hudson, Abby Sugg and Lauren Carraway each had singles wins for the Rams. Patel and Carraway remained unbeaten in 21 and 19 matches, respectively.

McLawhorn and Sugg picked up a doubles victory as well.

"Reidsville has a very good team," Greene Central coach Donald Clark said. "They forced us to hit a lot of balls in today's match. I was pleased with our play throughout the lineup."

Greene Central (20-2 overall) will host Cardinal Gibbons (20-2) on Tuesday.

Gators fall short

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Spring Creek had its season come to a close with a 5-1 loss to N.C. School of Science and Math in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 1-A dual-team playoffs on Tuesday.

Isabel Messelken earned the Gators lone victory.

Spring Creek made a remarkable turnaround in 2007, going from finishing last in the Carolina 1-A Conference a year ago, to fifth in the state this season.

Hawks advance

LaGRANGE -- North Lenoir defeated Farmville Central 6-0 in the second round of the Eastern Plains 2-A Conference tournament on Tuesday.

C.C. Croom, Ethan Shilf and Cory Johnson each scored a pair of goals for the Hawks. Schilf, Hugo Garcia and Thomas Falkner all had assists.

Bryce Grady made nine saves in goal for North Lenoir. The Hawks improve to 13-7-3 overall, and will face either Greene Central or Tarboro today in tournament play.

* Eastern Wayne 8, Mount Olive 6 -- Andrew McKeel had a 65-yard touchdown run to lead Eastern Wayne past Mount Olive. Lee Daniels connected with Deshawn Boudy on the two-point conversion. Micah Smith had four tackles and a fumble recovery for the Warriors. McKeel added an interception. Eastern Wayne faces the Boys Club on Tuesday.
