Kerr-Vance turns back Chargers in CPIC finals

Kerr-Vance Academy claimed the Class 1-A Coastal Plains Independent Conference volleyball tournament title with a 25-17, 25-17, 25-19 victory over Wayne Country Day.

It was the Spartans' third win over the Chargers this season.

"The girls started out really strong, but eventually slowed down due to Kerr-Vance picking our defense apart," said fourth-year WCDS coach Juliet Jones. "They knew just who to serve it to at the right time. My girls had the determination and heart to win, but fell short to our lack of serving.

"Our girls fought hard and never gave up."

Jessica Lewis paced the Chargers with five kills and three blocks. Kim Martell contributed two kills and four digs. Shelly Sullivan provided six digs, five service aces and five assists. Stephanie Sykes added one kill, two aces and six digs.

Wayne Country Day, the CPIC regular-season runner-up, dumped Faith Christian of Rocky Mount 25-22, 25-8, 25-17 in the semifinals.

Sullivan paced the Chargers with a double-double -- 17 assists, 10 digs. Lewis recorded seven kills and three blocks. Sykes had eight kills, three aces and five digs. Martell (two kills, two aces) and Sterling Coggins (seven assists) also played well in the straight-set win.

"The girls, initially, were very nervous and started out a little timid, but were able to gain their composure and play their game," said Jones. "They really stepped up and I was proud of them."

Wayne Country Day (13-4 overall) will learn its postseason fate today when the bids are released for the 12-team, N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association playoffs.
