WILSON -- Carrie Adams collected a season-high 11 aces during two significant early-match runs as Eastern Wayne eliminated Kinston 25-15, 25-21, 25-22 from the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference volleyball tournament.

The top-seeded Warriors (19-1 overall) oppose second-seeded and tournament host Wilson Beddingfield in the championship match today. Game time is 7 p.m.

Adams notched five aces during a 7-0 run in the opening set. The right-hander provided four consecutive aces during an 11-0 spurt in the second set as Eastern Wayne seized control. Adams also recorded six kills and eight digs in the straight-set sweep.

"Carrie had a great match at the serving line," said Eastern Wayne head coach Bruce Burridge.

Senior setter Brooke Newsome, the school's all-time assists leader, handed out 40 assists among five different hitters. Brittani Billups and Jordei Osby pounded out 13 and 10 kills, respectively. Anna Hajjar contributed four kills and Alysa Artis added seven.

Billups and Osby combined for two blocks. Hajjar and Brianna Williams shared match-high dig honors with Adams. Regan Stoneburner served two aces to go along with five digs.

"Defensively, we covered the floor well," said Burridge. "Our passing was all right. We played a pretty good game overall, but I don't know if we're hitting on all cylinders."

CBA's season halted

BEDDINGFIELD -- Charles B. Aycock had its season come to an end with a Carolina 3-A Conference Tournament semifinal 25-27, 18-25, 22-25 loss to Wilson Beddingfield on Tuesday.

Beth Carter had 11 kills for the Golden Falcons. Bridgette Briggs finished with seven kills and Lee Ann Sager added seven aces. Emily Jordan had 14 digs.

Aycock finishes the season at 4-14.

WCD downs Oakwood

Wayne Country Day picked up a 25-8, 21-25, 25-17, 25-16 win over visiting Oakwood on Tuesday.

Shelly Sullivan handed out 19 assists for the Chargers, to go with six kills and three digs. Sterling Coggins had 10 assists and one dig. Stephanie Sykes finished with eight aces, four kills and two digs.

Wayne Country day is 13-4 overall and 10-2 in Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference action. The Chargers will host the conference tournament on Friday.

Conquerors triumph

KINSTON -- Faith Christian picked up a 25-12, 20-25, 25-12, 25-18 win at Bethel Christian on Tuesday.

Junior Brittany Dell led the Conquerors with 10 digs and three aces. Faith Christian improved to 8-6 overall, and 8-5 in the N.C. Christian Schools Coastal 2-A Conference.

The Conquerors travel to Berean Christian in Fayettevile for regional tournament play on Friday.

Rams advance

SNOW HILL -- Greene Central cruised into the second round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 2-A dual-team playoffs with a 9-0 win over Durham School of the Arts on Tuesday.

Puja Patel improved her record to 16-0 with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Durham's Rukhsona Usmanova.

Ashley Grant, Elizabeth McLawhorn, Cally Hudson, Abby Sugg and Lauren Carraway also picked up singles wins for the Rams. Carraway moved her record to 18-0.

"This was one of our best performances of the season," Greene Central coach Donald Clark said. "The girls really turned in a great performance throughout the lineup today, from top to bottom."

Greene Central will host either Reidsville or Southern Vance in second-round play next Tuesday.

Aycock marches on

SWANSBORO -- Charles B. Aycock wasted little time disposing of White Oak on Tuesday. The Golden Falcons breezed into the second round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3-A dual-team playoffs with a 5-1 victory over White Oak at Swansboro High School.

Kristen Prosser, Courtney Barnes, Emilee Quinn, Kristen Bennett and Jessica Davis each picked up wins for Aycock.

"I was very pleased with our consistency, placement and concentration," Golden Falcons coach Luke Vail said. "We came out hungry and determined and played hard from beginning to end. I hope we can continue to raise our level of play each round in the playoffs."

Gators still in hunt

SPRING CREEK -- Spring Creek lived to fight another day with a 6-0 victory over Gates County on Tuesday in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 1-A dual-team playoffs.

After breezing through their first three singles matches without losing a game, the Gators pulled out some tightly contested matches late to earn the win.

Jamie Johnson, Isabelle Messelken, and Mary Elizabeth West each earned victories by the count of 6-0, 6-0. However, Ivy Best, Jamison Mossberg and Rachel Lewis found themselves in much tighter matches, with both Mossberg and Lewis forced to play a third set.

Spring Creek will host the N.C. School of Science and Math in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.

Chargers triumph

HENDERSON -- Eighth-grader Hil Tanner notched the game's lone goal as Wayne Country Day escaped Kerr-Vance Academy 1-0 in the Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference regular-season finale for both teams Tuesday afternoon.

Tanner, promoted to the varsity due to lack of players, scored in the 66th minute. The victory solidified the Chargers' chances of earning an opening-round home game in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A playoffs, which begin Friday.

"I'm proud of him," said WCDS head coach Baron Heinemann. "He was in the right place at the right time, and was able to finish it."

The Chargers owned a 7-3 edge in shots on goal and keeper Ryan Ford posted two saves against the Spartans.

"Kerr-Vance came out hard and fast, showed a lot of determination in the game," said Heinemann. "They were playing to keep their season alive. Our team started off a little slow, but eventually pulled it together and (we) were able to outlast them."

WCDS improved to 9-6-2 overall, including a 5-4-1 ledger in CPIC play.

Walnut Creek Ladies

Mary Ann Sutton emerged the second net winner in 1st Flight competition during a recent Eastern Ladies league tournament contested at Southern Wayne Country Club.

Other winners were: Evelyn Rose (first net, 2nd flight); Charlotte Campbell (second gross, 2nd flight) and Nancy Satterfield (low putts, 3rd flight).

Linda Watson claimed low putts during weekly tournament play at Walnut Creek Country Club. Rose and Josie Ottaviani seized low putts and low net, respectively.

JV sports

* Boys soccer -- Kerr-Vance scored three first-half goals and cruised past Wayne Country Day 3-0 in a Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference match Tuesday afternoon.

Neuse River YFL

Eastern Wayne 15, Grantham 14 -- Lee Daniels' two-point conversion pass to Andrew McKeel gave the Warriors the victory. Jimmy Parks and Andrew McKeel had touchdowns to lead the Eastern Wayne attack. On defense, Imon Pearsall had five solo tackles and a fumble recovery while Ricky Steiner intercepted two passes for the Warriors.
