PRINCETON -- Rosewood dispatched North Duplin in three games, 25-20, 25-8, 25-18 in the first round of the Class 1-A Carolina Conference volleyball tournament on Monday.

Taylor Johnson and Ashley Williams supplied seven kills apiece for the Eagles. Caroline Tart and Ashley Shaw chipped in five and two kills, respectively.

Paige Babb dished out 17 assists.

Senior Heather Hudson led the Rebels with three kills, an assist and a block. Katie Swanzey added six digs and three kills while Angelica Favela had two aces and two digs.

North Duplin's Sam Cates contributed an ace, a dig and kill before departing the match in game two with a badly sprained ankle.

"That threw off our balance," said North Duplin coach Heather Best. "We regrouped and fought in the third game, but I think emotionally we were still in a fog."

North Duplin ended up 6-9 overall and 4-6 in the league.

"We had a good season, one which many didn't think we would do as well as we did," said Best. "I am very proud of the girls, and we'll have a bright future with returning 10 players on the varsity squad."

Rosewood travels to top-seeded North Johnston today for semifinal-round play.

Aycock shocks Hunt

WILSON -- Charles B. Aycock upset third-seeded Wilson Hunt during opening-round play of the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference tournament Monday evening at Wilson Beddingfield.

The Golden Falcons prevailed 26-24, 18-25, 25-13, 25-21 and oppose second-seeded Wilson Beddingfield today.

Beth Carter tallied a team-high 15 kills while Bridgette Briggs added 10 kills. LeAnn Sager served seven aces and Emily Jordan came up with 16 digs for the Golden Falcons.

C.B. Aycock improved to 4-13 overall.

Princeton moves on

PRINCETON -- Princeton outlasted Ayden-Grifton 25-19, 14-25, 21-25, 25-19, 15-8 in their quarterfinal-round, Carolina 1-A Conference tournament match Monday.

The third-seeded Bulldogs face second-seeded Spring Creek today at North Johnston.

Ashley Braswell led Princeton with 13 kills and nine digs. Devon Murphy contributed nine digs, seven kills and three blocks while Amber Wood had a team-high 22 assists.

Brittany Baker also had a strong game with six digs, four blocks and one ace while Nikki Capps added four kills, three aces and three digs for the Bulldogs.

Soccer

Hawks top Cougars

LaGRANGE -- North Lenoir got goals from eight different players to defeat Goldsboro 10-0 on Monday.

The Hawks (11-7-3 overall) climbed to 7-2 in Eastern Plains 2-A Conference play.

Ethan Schilf and Cory Johnson both had two-goal games for North Lenoir. Other scorers for the Hawks were Will Norville, C.C. Croom, Nick Wallace, Matt Kennedy, Bryce Grady and Garret Phillips.

Eric Hardy chipped in with three assists to lead North Lenoir.

The Hawks will next go for a share of the EPC regular-season title when they play at Greene Central on Oct. 22.

Hunt defeats SW

WILSON -- Wilson Hunt scored four times in the first half and coasted to a 7-1 win over Southern Wayne in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play.

Carlos Zometa score for the Saints, his fifth goal of the season.

Southern Wayne (3-11-1 overall, 0-9 ECC) plays host to C.B. Aycock on Wednesday.

Magnus wins for WCS

Josh Magnus beat the field in a tri-meet against Johnston Christian and Cresset Christian on Monday afternoon.

Magnus placed first with a time of 18 minutes, three seconds on the 3.1-mile trek. Teammates Noah Kearney and Justin Brathwaite placed fourth and fifth, respectively, for the Eagles.

Wayne Christian runners took the top three spots in the girls' portion of the race. Charity Wright claimed first in 28:10, followed by Kayla Kennedy (28:50) and Tiffany Price (29:29).

* Boy's soccer -- Norwayne defeated host Greenwood 5-2 on Monday afternoon. Trey Millard and Juan Pina both found the back of the net twice for Norwayne, while Chase Thompson tallied the other goal. Bryan Johnson had the only assist for Norwayne (5-2-1 overall, 1-1-0 Wayne County Middle School Athletic Conference Division I). Jesse Rice scored in the 60th minute off an assist from Travis Nelson for Greenwood. The T-Birds (1-7-0) visit Brogden on Thursday.

* Boy's soccer -- Eastern Wayne completed a season sweep of conference rival Rosewood with a 4-2 win on Monday. Tyler Brown, Steven Taylor, Rene Agulic and Alan LaPean each collected a goal for the Warriors. Tyler Muhlenthaler provided an assist. EW keeper Alex Breindel recorded 16 saves. Nathan Huyser and Holly Pittard each tallied a goal for the Eagles. Goalie Joseph Fitzpatrick notched 16 saves. Eastern Wayne climbed to 6-2-0 overall, while Rosewood dropped to 1-6-1.

* Volleyball -- Norwayne beat host Greenwood 25-12, 25-7, 25-20 on Monday. Kayla Williams led Norwayne with 10 service points. Norwayne improves to a perfect 9-0 (3-0) and will next host Brogden on Oct. 22.

* Volleyball -- Yusley Lares and Whitney Frederick both contributed six aces apiece to lead Spring Creek to a 25-19, 25-8, 14-25, 25-17 win over Brogden on Monday. Yunely Lares added two digs and Dorian Wences one for the Gators. Spring Creek improves to 8-2 overall (5-1) and will next host Eastern Wayne on Oct. 22.

* Volleyball -- Madison Davis served 16 aces and added one kill in Grantham's 25-14, 25-12, 25-13 sweep of Mount Olive. Ally Herring and Morgan Powell contributed one kill apiece. Grantham (3-4 overall, 3-3 WCMSAC Division II) visits Rosewood on Monday.
