SNOW HILL -- Lindsey Frederick of Eastern Wayne and Southern Wayne's Tara Hirsch will meet today to decide the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference singles title.

In Wednesday's action, Frederick fought through a tough match against Charles B. Aycock's Jessica Davis, winning 6-2, 6-3 before coasting to a win over Wilson Hunt's Keionna Love 6-2, 6-2.

Hirsch took care of Kinston's Emily Broadway 6-1, 6-3 and the Warriors' Mollie Musgrave 6-4, 6-4.

In doubles play, it will be an all Aycock final as the tandems of Courtney Barnes-Emilee Quinn and Kristen Prosser-Kristen Bennett advanced to today's final.

Barnes-Quinn beat Lauren Wiggins-Alyssa Tilghman of Kinston 6-0, 6-0 and Wilson Hunt's Madison Cauley-Abby Earle 6-1, 6-3.

Prosser-Bennett defeated Wilson Hunt's Paige Tyson-Jordan Winslow 6-2, 6-0 and battled Lauren Bynum-Casie Musgrave of Eastern Wayne to a 7-6 (7-3), 1-6, 1-6, 6-4 win.

"Both of our doubles teams played exceptional tennis," said Aycock coach Luke Vail. "Prosser and Bennett stepped up big midway through the third set and turned the match in their favor. Courtney and Emilee did a great job of controlling the net and putting the ball away."

Golf

Reeves leads Warriors

Jasmine Reeves took medalist honors by carding a 42 at the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference match contested at Lane Tree Golf Course on Wednesday afternoon.

The Warriors finished first with an overall score of 141. Southern Wayne was in second with a 151, followed by Wilson Hunt with 162 and Wilson Beddingfield with a 181. Charles B. Aycock also competed, but did not have enough competitors to qualify for a team score.

Contributing to the Eastern Wayne win was Paula Webber who shot a 44, Madison Sauls with a 55, Hannah Grantham with a 59 and Courtney Wegman who shot a 60.

Alyssa Bradshaw and Taylor Reeves both tallied a 49 to lead the Saints. Jordan Hill was just behind with a 53 and Taylor Scott shot a 57.

For the Golden Falcons, Lauren Larison carded a 58 while Krista Smith had a 68.

Eastern Wayne next plays in the Willow Springs Invitational on Friday.

Cross country

Frederick leads field

PIKEVILLE -- Nick Frederick's first-place finish led Charles B. Aycock to a 21-34 win over Southern Wayne in an Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference dual-team meet.

Frederick aced the 3.1 mile course in 18 minutes, 25 seconds. He was followed by fellow Golden Falcon runners Lemonte Woodard (19:09) and Daughton Denning (20:24).

Scott Harrell placed fourth to lead the Saints with a time of 20:49.

In the girls' race, Aycock's Caroline Schlaeppi was nearly two minutes better than her closest competitor, finishing the race in 22:59.

Teammates Megan Hales, Lorena Estrada, Taylor Allen and Taylor Forbis rounded out the top five for the Golden Falcons.

Southern Wayne's Emily Hudson finished sixth at 30:01. The Saints did not have enough runners to have a team score.

Warriors blank Bruins

WILSON -- Eric Suncin tallied a goal and an assist to help Eastern Wayne defeat Wilson Beddingfield 2-0 on Wednesday night.

Sang Kim added the other goal for the Warriors.

Eastern Wayne (7-8 overall, 5-3 ECC) plays host to C.B. Aycock on Monday.

Hawks rout Panthers

BETHEL -- North Lenoir got a pair of goals from C.C. Croom, Cory Johnson and Ethan Schilf to defeat Eastern Plains 2-A rival North Pitt 7-0 on Wednesday evening.

Hugo Garcia added the other goal for North Lenoir. Bryce Grady had the shutout in goal with eight saves.

The Hawks (10-7-3, 6-2 EPC) entertain Goldsboro on Oct. 15

Saints fall to Vikings

DUDLEY -- Kinston's Mohammed Ali recorded a hat trick (three goals) to lead the Vikings to a 5-0 win over Southern Wayne in an Eastern Carolina 3-A match.

Evan Price found the back of the net the two other times for Kinston.

The Saints (3-10-1 overall, 0-8 ECC) visit Wilson Hunt on Monday.

JV sports

* Girls' tennis -- Charles B. Aycock completed its season with a 7-2 win over Rocky Mount Academy on Wednesday afternoon. Singles winners for Aycock were Hollie Baker, Alicia Sodoma, Nicole Kessler, Abbey Strickland and Harlie Howard. In doubles play, the tandems of Ashley Howell-Kristen Fischer and Kessler-Strickland were winners. Aycock finishes 11-4 overall (5-0).

Middle schools

* Volleyball -- Spring Creek defeated Grantham in a tightly-contested match 25-17, 26-24, 17-25, 25-14. Trailing in game two 16-24, Spring Creek rallied for a 26-24 win to seize momentum. Whitney Frederick recorded six aces to lead the Gators while Dorian Wences and Yusely Lares contributed four and three aces respectively. Mayra Barajas had one dig for the Gators as well. Spring Creek improves to 7-2 overall (4-1) and will next host Brogden on Oct. 15.

NRY Football League

* Eastern Wayne 26, Spring Creek 6 -- The Wee Warriors recorded a strong defensive effort. Larry Newsome recorded five tackles to lead the Warriors while Will Walters contributed three and Sam Biggs added two. Ricky Steiner, Lee Daniels, Devonte Corum, Andrew McNeel and Jimmy Parks all contributed scores. Eastern Wayne's next game will be Saturday against Grantham.
