AYDEN -- Heather Hudson had 14 service points, 12 kills, seven aces and seven digs as North Duplin downed Carolina 1-A Conference foe Ayden-Grifton 27-25, 17-25, 25-17, 25-23 on Thursday.

Sam Cates finished with 16 service points, 12 assists and nine digs for the Rebels. Felicia Lynch tallied 15 service points, seven aces, five assists, and five digs. Angelica Favela added 16 service points, four aces, three assists, and three digs. Katlyn Eloshway chipped in 19 service points and four aces.

"We came back from an 18-24 deficit to win game one," North Duplin coach Heather Best said. "I was really proud of the way we played, they worked well as a team and because of that we won.

"Heather and Sam worked hard at the net, while Katie, Katlyn, Felicia and Angelica worked hard on defense to defend against a strong Ayden-Grifton outside hitter."

The Rebels (6-6 overall) took over sole possession of fourth place in the league at 4-4. They continue play next Tuesday at Rosewood.

Gators now in 1st

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Ashley Barwick and Brooke Alberston each had 13 assists to help Spring Creek turn back Rosewood 25-10, 25-13, 20-25, 25-21 in Carolina 1-A Conference action on Thursday.

The Gators (12-2 overall) grabbed sole possession of first place in the conference after North Johnston suffered a five-set loss to county archrival Princeton.

Kristin Smith pounded out 12 kills and Brandi Simpkins added eight kills. Tasha Whitfield added nine kills.

The Gators entertain North Johnston next Tuesday.

Hawks still cruising

BETHEL -- Defending Eastern Plains 2-A Conference champion North Lenoir knocked off North Pitt 25-15, 25-11, 25-18 on Thursday afternoon.

The Hawks (17-0 overall) remained unbeaten in seven EPC outings.

Jordan Hudson passed out 21 assists, and tallied 15 service points. Anna Kennedy had 15 service points and six kills. Kayla Sutton finished with 10 service points and five kills. Marissa Lanier chipped in nine kills.

The Hawks visit Goldsboro on Tuesday.

Warriors top Aycock

PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock fell short in its quest for its second Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference win on Thursday afternoon.

The Golden Falcons fell 25-16, 25-16, 25-23 to Wilson Hunt.

Lee Ann Sager had six kills and Emilee Jordan finished with 14 digs.

Aycock drops to 2-12 overall and 1-7 in the ECC. The Golden Falcons visit Eastern Wayne on Tuesday.

Bulldogs survive

PRINCETON -- Princeton took the first two games from North Johnston and held on for a 25-16, 25-9, 24-26, 16-25, 16-14 Carolina 1-A Conference win on Thursday.

Ashley Braswell had 13 kills, two digs, and an ace for the Bulldogs. Katie Sasser chipped in eight kills, and Brittany Baker had eight kills and three digs. Devon Murphy added five digs, and Amber Wood handed out 22 assists.

The Bulldogs (9-8 overall, 5-3 Carolina) visit Ayden-Grifton on Tuesday.

Chargers cruise

Wayne Country day swept non-conference foe Epiphany School 25-11, 25-16, 25-9 on Thursday.

Stephanie Sykes had eight aces, and four kills. Shelly Sullivan finished with eight assists, four kills, and four aces. Kim Martell added five aces and a dig.

The Chargers are 11-4 overall and 8-2 in Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference play. Wayne Country Day will travel to Oxford on Tuesday.

Tennis

Warriors roll on

KINSTON -- Eastern Wayne routed Kinston 9-0 in the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference regular-season finale for both teams.

The Warriors (13-1 overall) finished 10-0 in the league after receiving a forfeit from Wilson Beddingfield earlier in the day. They'll open the N.C. High School Athletic Association dual-team playoffs at home in mid-October.

Lindsey Frederick, Mollie Musgrave, Casie Musgrave, Danielle Daniel, Elizabeth Borden and Kelsi Yates each picked up singles wins for the Warriors.

Frederick-Mollie Musgrave, Daniel-Yates, and Borden-Emily Northington were victorious in doubles play.

MOUNT OLIVE -- Charles B. Aycock earned an Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference win by knocking off Southern Wayne 7-2 at Mount Olive College on Thursday.

Courtney Barnes, Emilee Quinn, Kristen Bennett, Jessica Davis and Mallory Strickland had singles wins for the Golden Falcons. Tara Hirsch picked up a singles victory for the Saints.

C.B. Aycock (12-7 overall, 8-2 ECC) clinched the No. 2 seed for the N.C. High School Athletic Association dual-team playoffs.

SNOW HILL -- Greene Central got singles play to start the match and earned a 7-2 Eastern Plains 2-A Conference win over Spring Creek on Thursday.

Puja Patel, Cally Hudson, Abby Sugg and Lauren Carraway had singles wins for the Rams. Isabelle Messelken, and Jamie Johnson were victorious in singles play for the Gators.

Greene Central is 18-2 overall, while Spring Creek is 12-4. The EPC tournament will be held Monday and Tuesday at Greene Central.

Rosewood dropped a Carolina/Super Six 1-A clash with North Johnston 6-3 on Thursday afternoon.

Missy Bailey, Erica Nichols, and Ashli Allen earned singles victories for the Eagles.

* Football -- Charles B. Aycock jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the second quarter and went on to a 22-12 win at home over Wilson Beddingfield on Thursday. Shepard Whitfield had 100 yards rushing and touchdown for the Golden Falcons. Shalando McBride added 60 yards on the ground and a touchdown. David Gurganus hooked up with Matt West on a 22-yard touchdown pass. Devonte Petteway had an interception, and Antonio Dunston recovered a fumble for Aycock. The Golden Falcons are 3-3 overall and 1-0 in the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference. Aycock travels to Kinston on Thursday.

* Volleyball -- North Lenoir improved to 5-0 in the Eastern Plains 2-A Conference with a 25-17, 22-25, 25-20 win at North Pitt on Thursday. Kristen Davenport had 10 service points for the Hawks. North Lenoir is 15-0 overall, and will host Goldsboro on Tuesday.

* Volleyball -- Spring Creek rallied to win its first game of the season 21-25, 25-22, 25-12 on Thursday. Randi Oxendine had seven aces, seven assists and two kills for the Gators. Emily Thompson added three aces and two kills. Spring Creek is now 1-13 overall.

* Volleyball -- North Duplin fell 25-17, 25-21 at Ayden-Grifton in Carolina 1-A Conference play on Thursday. Crystal Robinson had four aces for the Rebels. April Jones finished with two aces, and Brantlee Barwick had two digs. North Duplin is 1-11 overall and 1-7 conference play. The Rebels continue league play at Rosewood on Tuesday.

* Volleyball -- Charles B. Aycock fell 19-25, 25-21, 14-25 to Wilson Hunt in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play on Thursday. Victoria Benton had five kills for the Golden Falcons and Miranda Aycock added four aces. Aycock is 6-7 overall and 4-4 in the ECC. The Golden Falcons travel to Eastern Wayne on Tuesday.

Middle schools

* Football -- Keenan Wynn had three rushing touchdowns and also caught a touchdown pass in Grantham's 24-12 victory over Mount Olive. Wynn found the endzone on the ground from 79, 30 and five yards out, and hooked up with Keith Jones on a 30-yard scoring strike. Jamario Roberts had two fumble recoveries. Anthony McKinney had 70 yards rushing on eight carries for Mount Olive. Devonte Artishad seven tackles, and Spencer Parker recovered a fumble for Mount Olive. Grantham is 3-0 overall, and 1-0 in the Division II Conference. Grantham will host Greenwood on Thursday. Mount Olive drops to 3-1 overall, and 1-1 in conference play, and will travel to Brogden on Thursday.

* Football -- A.J. Mundle had a 22-yard touchdown run and Hunter Jones added a touchdown catch as Norwayne defeated Greenwood 12-0. Willie Sutton led Norwayne's rushing attach with 75 yards. Kyle Pilkington (seven tackles) and Hunter Britt (six tackles), led the defense along with Michael Rosco, who added an interception. Norwayne entertains Eastern Wayne on Thursday.

* Volleyball -- Grantham outlasted Mt. Olive on Thursday, winning in five games 25-20, 25-17, 23-25, 14-25, 15-13. Madison Davis had 13 service points, 12 aces and eight kills for Grantham. Georganna Thompson added 26 service points, three aces and three kills. Elizabeth Best had 18 service points for Mount Olive, and Emily Carr added 17. Grantham is 2-3 overall and 1-2 in Division II Conference play.

* Volleyball -- Norwayne swept Greenwood 25-6, 26-24, 25-11 on Thursday. Conner Davis had 13 service points for Norwayne, and Imari Howell added 12. Norwayne is 6-0 overall, 2-0 in the Division II Conference, and hosts Mount Olive on Monday.

* Volleyball -- Spring Creek defeated Brogden 25-16, 16-25, 25-23, 25-16 on Thursday. Dorian Wences had seven service points and two aces. Whitney Frederick finished with 13 service points and four aces, and Karen Best added five service points and three aces. Spring Creek is 4-2 overall and 3-1 in conference play. Spring Creek visits Dillard on Monday.

* Soccer -- Norwayne downed visiting Greenwood 6-3 on Thursday. Juan Pina had three goals for Norwaye, and Bryan Johnson added two more. Trey Millard also had a goal and two assists for Norwaye, and Jose Rodriguez chipped in two assists. Nick Hilker had six saves, while Madison Mercer and Cameron Taylor were defensive standouts. Travis Nelson had a pair of goals for Greenwood and Jean Pierre Ponce added another. Jesse Rice had two assists and Josh Hahn also assisted on a goal. Norwayne (3-1-1 overall) entertains Mount Olive on Monday. Greenwood (0-5 overall) will host Eastern Wayne on Monday.

Soccer -- Six different players scored to help guide Eastern Wayne past Rosewood 9-1 on Thursday. Steven Taylor had three goals and two assists. Jae Kim had two goals, and Tyler Brown, Tyler Muehlenthaler, Russell Turner and Alex Breindel each scored as well. Nathan Huyser scored for Rosewood. Breindel had five saves for Eastern Wayne, and Ryan Hartley made eight stops in goal for Rosewood. Eastern Wayne improves to 3-2 overall, 1-0 in conference play, and visits Greenwood on Monday Rosewood is 1-4-1 overall, and travels to Brogden on Monday.
