Eastern Wayne seized the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference women's tennis title outright with a 9-0 shelling of county rival Southern Wayne on Wednesday afternoon.

The Warriors, coming off a five-hour marathon against archrival Charles B. Aycock, easily swept the regular-season series against the Saints. Lindsey Frederick, Lauren Bynum, Mollie Musgrave, Casie Musgrave, Danielle Daniel and Elizabeth Borden each collected a straight-set singles win.

Eastern Wayne dominated doubles play and clinched the No. 1 seed for the N.C. High School Athletic Association dual-team playoffs, which begin in mid-0ctober.

The Warriors (11-1 overall) captured their eighth ECC victory heading into today's contest at Kinston.

Gators win C/SS

SMITHFIELD -- Spring Creek completed a perfect run through its Carolina-Super Six 1-A schedule by defeating North Johnston 8-1 on Wednesday afternoon.

The Gators (12-3 overall) finished undefeated in 12 conference matches.

Spring Creek's top seed, Jamie Johnson, had no trouble with Amber Weaver as she prevailed 8-0. Mary Elizabeth West was next and she defeated Hailey Newsome 8-3 for the Gators.

Isabelle Messelken, Rachel Lewis, Emily Edwards and Jamison Mossberg all added singles wins for Spring Creek.

The Gators grabbed the No. 1 seed for the N.C. High School Athletic Association 1-A dual-team playoffs. They conclude regular-season play today at 2-A power Greene Central.

Saints take match

DUDLEY -- Princeton's Christi Mileski came away with medalist honors by shooting a 46, but Southern Wayne prevailed in a four-team match on Wednesday.

The Saints finished with a team score of 135. Princeton followed with a 176 and North Johnston with 181. Charles B. Aycock also competed but did not have enough competitors to qualify.

Taylor Scott led Southern Wayne with a 47 while Jordan Hill and Taylor Reaves both shot 49.

Lauren Larison led Aycock with a 61.

Southern Wayne will next play in an Eastern Carolina 3-A meet at Lane Tree Golf Club on Oct. 8.

Soccer

Hawks top Jaguars

FARMVILLE -- C.C. Croom and Jaime Ellison both tallied goals to lift North Lenoir to a 2-1, Eastern Plains 2-A Conference victory over Farmville Central.

In goal, Bryce Grady held the Jaguars to only one goal as he made 12 saves.

North Lenoir improves to 8-7-3 overall (4-2-0 EPC) and will next host Tarboro on Oct. 8.

Rodriguez leads CBA

PIKEVILLE -- Alex Rodriguez scored two goals and added two assists as Charles B. Aycock drilled Wilson Beddingfield 7-1 in Eastern Carolina 3-A play.

After falling behind in the 10th minute 1-0, the Golden Falcons rattled off three-straight goals to close the half. Rodriguez assisted on goals by Gavin Forrest and Tyson Pearson while David Burke found Rodriguez for the other score.

The second half was more of the same as Pearson found Jorge Delgado 63 minutes in to make it 4-1. Delgado then teamed up with Rodriguez to make it 5-1 three minutes later.

Tucker Pearson and Tyler Ruffin each scored for the final six-goal margin.

In goal, Brandon Davis made three saves for Aycock.

The Golden Falcons (11-2-1 overall, 6-0 ECC) visit Kinston on Oct. 8.

JV sports

* Girls' tennis -- Eastern Wayne concluded its season with a 5-4 win over Southern Wayne on Wednesday afternoon. After falling behind 4-2 in singles matches, the Warriors were victorious in all three doubles matches to claim victory. The tandems of Warner Underwood-Miller Delbridge, Brandi Walston-Taylor Falcone and Janielle Daniel-Joann Talton all recorded wins. In singles play, Leah Smith and Morgan Corbett gave Eastern Wayne singles points. Southern Wayne's Leigh Ann Jarmen, Jessica Best, Amberly Martin and Robin Baker each won in singles play. The Warriors finish the year 12-4.

Middle schools

* Football -- Marvin Miller's two defensive touchdowns helped Brogden to a 38-0 win over Spring Creek on Wednesday night. Miller made two interceptions -- returning one for a score -- and returned a fumble 40 yards for another touchdown. Lane Gooch added a fumble recovery and five solo tackles as well for Brogden. Offensively, Devin Oliver rushed for 50 yards and a touchdown while also taking a punt back 65 yards for another score. Cory Edwards also contributed a rushing touchdown for Brogden. The Rams 4-0 (1-0) will next host Mount Olive on Oct. 11.

In Wednesday's edition, it was incorrectly reported that Emily Northington won a singles match in Eastern Wayne's victory over Charles B. Aycock. Elizabeth Borden claimed the singles point.
