Rosewood picked up its first Carolina 1-A Conference win of the season with a 25-17, 25-23, 25-17 victory over Ayden-Grifton on Thursday.

Paige Babb handed out 21 assists, to go along with four aces, one dig and a kill. Ashley Williams pounded out 15 kills, and had four aces three digs and a block. Taylor Johnson chipped in eight kills, three aces and three blocks. Mary Jo Moore had three kills, three aces and a dig.

The Eagles (4-9, 1-5 Carolina) visit North Johnston next Tuesday.

Hudson leads Hawks

FARMVILLE -- Jordan Hudson handed out 26 assists and finished with four blocks as North Lenoir remained undefeated with its 25-12, 22-25, 26-24, 25-10 victory over Eastern Plains 2-A Conference opponent Farmville Central on Thursday.

Anna Kennedy tallied 15 service points and three aces, and Kayla Sutton had nine kills and seven blocks. Marrisa Lanier chipped in 13 service points, seven kills and four assists. Conner Jordan finished with 13 service points, five kills and four blocks.

North Lenior (15-0 overall, 6-0 EPC) is the guest of Tarboro on Tuesday.

Panthers triumph

KENLY -- North Duplin fell to 2-4 in Carolina 1-A Conference play with a 25-14, 25-18, 25-13 loss to North Johnston on Thursday.

Heather Hudson led the Rebels with four kills, an ace and a block. Sam Cates had two kills and two aces, and Katie Swanzey added three digs. Felicia Lynch tallied three assists and three digs.

The Rebels (4-6 overall) visit Princeton next Tuesday.

Aycock falls short

PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock rallied to force a fifth game against Eastern Carolina Conference opponent Wilson Beddingfield on Thursday, but fell just short 18-25, 18-25, 25-10, 25-22, 9-15.

Beth Carter led Aycock's attack with 11 kills and eight aces. Bridgette Briggs tallied nine kills, and Lauren Adcock had five kills. Leigh Smith added five aces.

"That's probably the best match we've played all year," Aycock coach Davis Harris said. "We never quit."

The Golden Falcons are 2-10 overall and 1-5 in the ECC. Aycock continues conference play on Tuesday at Kinston.

Chargers fall

HENDERSON -- Wayne Country Day fell 12-25, 25-16, 16-25, 18-25 to Kerr-Vance Academy in Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference play on Thursday.

Jessica Lewis tallied six kills and a block for the Chargers. Stephanie Sykes had four kills and four digs. Sterlign Coggins handed out five assists, and Shelly Sullivan had seven assists and six digs. Kim Martell had four aces and Erin Taylor chipped in six digs.

Wayne Country Day is 9-3 overall and and 8-2 in conference play. The Chargers host Goldsboro on Monday.

Tennis

Gators capture crown

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Spring Creek clinched the Carolina/Super Six 1-A Conference regular-season title with its 5-4 victory over Ayden-Grifton on Thursday.

The Gators picked up their first conference title since 2004 and fourth overall in school history.

Jamie Johnson, Mary Elizabeth West, Isabelle Messelken and Jamison Mossberg each had singles wins for Spring Creek.

The duo of Johnson-West earned the Gators only doubles win.

Spring Creek (10-3 overall, 10-0 C/SS) earned the No. 1 seed for the N.C. High School Athletic Association dual-team playoffs. The Gators visit Rosewood on Tuesday.

Saints roll at home

MOUNT OLIVE -- Southern Wayne had little trouble in its 8-1 Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference victory over Kinston on Thursday.

Tara Hirsch, Katlyn Thornton, April Tucker, Lauren Wiggins, Stephanie Cox and Emily Martin each recored singles wins for Southern Wayne.

The duos of Thorton-Brianna Lofton, Tucker-Cox and Hirsch-Martin picked up doubles victories for the Saints.

Southern Wayne is 10-5 overall and 4-3 in the ECC. The Saints visit Wilson Hunt on Tuesday.

Rosewood dealt loss

Rosewood's search for its third Carolina/Super Six 1-A Conference win of the season fell short in the form of a 3-6 loss to North Duplin on Thursday.

Missy Bailey and Erica Nichols had singles victories for the Eagles. Rebecca Coats, Jodie Williamson, Elizabeth Lane and Sarah Jackson each earned singles wins for North Duplin.

Rosewood is 2-4 in Carolina 1-A play.

SW forges tie

DUDLEY -- North Lenoir and Southern Wayne played to a 2-2 tie in non-conference action on Thursday night.

C.C. Croom got the Hawks on the board with an unassisted goal in the first half, and North Lenoir led 1-0 at the break.

Carlos Zometa evened things up at 1-1 with his second goal of the season for the Saints. Southern Wayne went ahead when Jorge Cortes found the back of the net for his first goal of the year.

However, Jamie Ellison scored on an assist from Croom with less than seven minutes to play.

Bryce Grady had seven saves in goal for the Hawks, while Roy Molina finished with 15 saves for Southern Wayne. North Lenoir had a 31-15 shots on goal advantage.

North Lenoir is 7-6-3 overall and will host Eastern Plains 2-A Conference rival Greene Central on Monday night. Southern Wayne is 3-5-1 overall and 0-4 in the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference. The Saints continue conference play on Monday at Charles B. Aycock.

Cross Country

Magnus paces Eagles

SMITHFIELD -- Josh Magnus finished as the top runner in Wayne Christian's meet with Johnston Christian, Wilson Christian and Cresset Academy on Thursday. Magnus finished with a time of 18 minutes, 15 seconds.

The Eagles were the only squad with enough runners to field a full boys team. Wayne Christian's Justin Brathwaite finished fourth with a time of 21:12, followed by teammate Noah Kerney, who completed the 3.1-mile course in 22:30.

Wilson had the only full girls team, and Charity Wright was the top Wayne Christian runner, finishing sixth with a time of 29:33.

The Eagles will return to action on Tuesday at Wake Christian.

JV sports

* Volleyball -- North Duplin fell to North Johnston 25-22, 25-15 in Carolina 1-A Conference play. Brantlee Barwick had two aces, two digs and one kill for the Rebels. Amanda White finished with three digs and two aces. North Duplin (1-9 overall) fell to 1-5 in the conference.

* Volleyball -- Rosewood knocked off Ayden-Grifton 25-19, 17-25, 25-23 in Carolina 1-A Conference action. Rachel Kornegay paced the Eagles with four kills. Holly Jones hammered out three kills, three aces and added a dig. Chelsea Sawkin handed out four assists, to go with two aces and a dig. Rosewood (4-7 overall) improved to 4-2 in the conference.

* Tennis -- Eastern Wayne earned a 6-3 non-conference win over North Lenoir. Janielle Daniel, Morgan Corbett, Margaret Guijarro, Brooke Butts and Meghan Thompson each had singles wins for Eastern Wayne. Hailey Abbott picked up a singles win for North Lenoir. The tandems of Abbott-Kristin Roman and Samantha Strand-Allison Sugg had doubles victories for the Hawks. Butts-Caroline Jones had Eastern Wayne's lone doubles win.

Middle schools

* Football -- Eastern Wayne defeated Spring Creek 30-6. Masharee Tray had a pair of touchdowns and Tykel Thompson added another score for Eastern Wayne. The Warriors are now 2-1.

* Football -- Grantham defeated Rosewood 36-0. Keenan Winn had touchdown runs of 36, 34 and 22 yards, and also caught 40-yard touchdown pass from Keith Jones to lead Grantham. Max Waddell had 16 tackles for Grantham, as it improved to 2-0. Grantham visits Mount Olive on Thursday.

* Football -- Tyshawn Vann rushed for 164 yards and a touchdown as Mount Olive defeated Dillard 30-20. Juan Pearsall hauled in a 57 yard touchdown catch for Mount Olive. Devonte Artis, Robert Lennox and Donald Stewart led the way defensively. Mount Olive improved to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the conference, and will host Grantham on Thursday.

* Football -- Brogden Middle triumphed over Norwayne 20-6. Devin Oliver had 183 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Cory Edwards had eight solo tackles and Devin Oliver had six solo tackles for Brogden. Ronell Outlaw and Marvin Miller each had fumble recoveries.

* Volleyball -- After dropping the first two games, Spring Creek rallied to knock off Eastern Wayne 25-14, 25-10, 26-24, 27-25, 15-13. Yasely Lares and Yunely Lares each had four aces for Spring Creek. Whitney Frederick, Amanda Casey and Emily Spengler each had three aces. Spring Creek is now 2-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play. The Gators host Grantham on Monday.

* Soccer -- Edger Rangle's goal with seven minutes left in the ballgame lifted Spring Creek to a 2-1 victory over Eastern Wayne. Antonio Avila got the Gators on the board in the first half, before Eastern Wayne's Tyler Brown tied the game at 1-1. Spring Creek improved to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in conference play, and will host Grantham on Monday. Eastern Wayne is 2-2 overall and will visit Rosewood on Thursday.
