RED SPRINGS -- Wayne Christian's Josh Magnus captured first place in the Cougar Classic cross country invitational contested Saturday at Flora MacDonald Academy.
Magnus, a junior, ran the 3.1-mile course in 18 minutes, 21 seconds. Teammates Justin Brathwaite and Noah Kearney ended up 17th and 20th overall, respectively, in the five-team meet.
Conner Jones (27th) and Mark Sawyer (28th) rounded out the Eagles' scoring. Josh Burdett, Nick Sullivan, Will Massey and Matthew Laramee also participated in the event.
On the girls' side, Logan Dawson paced Wayne Christian with a ninth-place effort in 25:27. Kayla Kennedy (14th), Katie Austin (17th), Tiffany Price (19th) and Katherine Laramee (22nd) also ran well for the Eagles.
Jennifer Price and Christina Foster did not participate in the meet.
Fayetteville Christian claimed the boys' and girls' team titles. Also running were host Flora MacDonald, Red Springs High School and Rocky Mount Prep.
Wayne Christian travels to Cresset Christian today for a Class 1-A Carolina Christian Conference meet.

Jewel Ivey captured the Walnut Creek Club Championship and Brooke Eason finished runner-up. Eason also claimed the play-of-the-day victory in weekly tournament play on the WCCC links.
Novella Zambelli won first flight and Charlotte Campbell took second flight during the Championship. Ivey and Zambelli grabbed low gross and low net honors, respectively. Evelyn Rose and Linda Cannon won low gross and low net, respectively, in second flight action.
Ivey seized the championship flight during Eastern Ladies League tournament play contested at Brook Valley Country Club. Josie Ottaviani (second gross, first flight), Rose (first net, first flight) and Betty Holloway (low putts, fourth flight) also returned home with honors.
