Trojan spikers sweep Bobcats in Conference Carolinas action

MOUNT OLIVE -- Senior outside hitter Sam Mitchell recorded 22 kills and freshman Alicia Mote added a career-high 18 kills to lead Mount Olive to a 30-28, 30-22, 24-30, 18-30, 15-11 victory over Conference Carolinas leader Lees-McRae on Saturday afternoon.

The Trojans extended their winning streak to four matches and handed the Bobcats their first conference loss of the season. Mount Olive (8-8 overall, 4-1 CC) moved to within a half-game of Lees-McRae, which exited Kornegay Arena 9-8 overall and 5-1 in the league.

Racey Bartley's kill broke an 11-11 tie in game five and Corie Skislak sealed the win with two blocks and a kill. Bartley finished with 16 kills, while Skislak added 12 kills and four blocks.

Mote completed a double-double with 14 digs and shared match-high honors with three service aces. Bartley served two aces, as did Kari Ham, who also recorded a career-high 18 digs. Mallory Peavler led the Trojans defensively with 22 digs, while Joanie Werling recorded 41 assists.

Lees-McRae was led by Daviana Metti with a match-high 23 kills to go with five blocks. Natalie Burns added 13 kills and seven blocks, while Lauren Dickover recorded 55 assists.

Saturday's contest marked the second five-game win in Mount Olive's last four outings in which the Trojans won games one and two.

"The girls played hard, but we need to work on finishing in game three," said Trojan assistant coach Sara Christie.

Mount Olive completes its four-match homestand Tuesday against Coker (S.C.) College. The match begins at 6:30 p.m.

Women's soccer

CHARLOTTE -- Lyndsay Brennan scored Mount Olive's lone goal as the Trojans played to a 1-1 draw against Conference Carolinas foe Queens University on Saturday afternoon.

Brennan converted a corner kick from April Jacobs, her 45th assist of her career.

The Royals' Kari Byzewski answered 10 minutes later off an assist from Jackie Groff.

Queens (2-6-1 overall, 1-2-1 CC) attempted 12 second-half shots and four corner kicks, but couldn't find the back of the net.

The Trojans (2-6-0, 1-1-1) attempted just eight shots on goal, including the overtime session. Royals goalkeeper Kristen Kornack recorded three saves in the 110-minute affair.

Ali O'Steen recorded a career-high 14 saves in goal for the Trojans.

The Trojans travel to UNC Pembroke on Wednesday.

Men's soccer

CHARLOTTE -- Aaron Doyle provided the game-winning goal 11 minutes into the opening half and Queens University shut out Mount Olive 3-0 in a Conference Carolinas men's contest Saturday afternoon.

The teams entered halftime with the same score.

Zach Luna nearly tied the match as the second half began, but Queens goalkeeper Dan Williams snuffed Luna's shot attempt.

Kevin O'Donnell supplied the Royals' second goal and Charles Cassidy rebounded a missed shot by O'Donnell to conclude the scoring.

The Royals owned a 17-6 edge in shots on goal. Trojans keeper Ryan McCrikard finished with six saves in the 80-minute contest.

Queens University (4-3-3, 2-0-2 CC) claimed its second consecutive victory. Mount Olive (3-6-0) remained winless in three conference outings and suffered its sixth straight defeat of the season.

The Trojans visit in-state opponent UNC Pembroke on Tuesday. Game time is 7 p.m.
