SEVEN SPRINGS -- Spring Creek knocked North Duplin from the unbeaten ranks and claimed sole possession of the Class 1-A Carolina/Super Six Conference race with a doubleheader sweep Tuesday afternoon.

The Gators dumped the Rebels 5-1 and 7-2.

North Duplin suffered its first losses after five consecutive C/SS victories.

Jamie Johnson, Mary Elizabeth West, Isabel Messelken, Rachel Lewis and Jamison Mossberg each earned a singles point in the opening match. Jodie Williamson collected the Rebels' lone win.

In the nightcap, Johnson, West, Messelken and Mossberg each prevailed in singles. Williamson and fourth-seeded Elizabeth Lane triumphed for North Duplin.

The Gators (6-3 overall) won two of three doubles matches to remain unbeaten in six Carolina/Super Six Conference outings. They continue play Thursday at league foe Wallace-Rose Hill.

Warriors rout Kinston

Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference leader Eastern Wayne sent league foe Kinston home with a 9-0 loss on Tuesday afternoon.

Lindsey Frederick, Lauren Bynum, Mollie Musgrave, Danielle Daniel, Emily Northington and Elizabeth Borden each had singles wins for Eastern Wayne.

The Warriors (6-1 overall) remained unbeaten in five ECC matches. They begin second-half play at home Thursday against county rival Southern Wayne.

Golden Falcons triumph

PIKEVILLE -- Paced by a strong start from its singles players, Charles B. Aycock toppled Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference counterpart Southern Wayne 7-2 on Tuesday.

Courtney Barnes, Emilee Quinn, Kristen Bennett, Jessica Davis and Mallory Strickland each had singles wins for the Golden Falcons.

Aycock improves to 7-4 overall and 4-1 in the ECC. The Golden Falcons will host Wilson Fike in a non-conference match at 3:30 today.

Volleyball

Unbeaten Hawks cruise

LaGRANGE -- Jordan Hudson handed out 17 assists. Conner Jordan had six kills and North Lenoir remained unbeaten on Tuesday with a 25-8, 25-9, 25-12 Eastern Plains 2-A Conference win over North Pitt.

Hudson also tallied 19 service points and five aces. Marrisa Lanier finished with four kills and Asheena Moore had three kills. Kayla Sutton chipped in three blocks.

The Hawks are now 12-0 overall, and 3-0 in the EPC. North Lenoir will visit conference foe Goldsboro on Thursday.

Eagles fall to Trinity

With three starters out of the lineup, Wayne Christian hung tough but fell 12-25, 18-25, 14-25 to Trinity of Raleigh in a Carolina Christian 1-A Conference match on Tuesday.

Hope Wright had two kills and Christian Brogneaux handed out five assists for the Eagles. Kaitlyn Kosuda finished with three aces.

"Hope Wright and Allison Rose stepped up and led this team," Wayne Christian coach Courtney Chewning said. "The players stepped up and played in positions they normally do not play. All I can ask for is that these girls hustle during each play. They did just that."

Wayne Christian travels to Crossroads Christian on Friday.

Rebels feel road woes

AYDEN -- North Duplin lost a Carolina 1-A Conference match 25-19, 25-21, 25-14 at Ayden-Grifton on Tuesday.

Heather Hudson had four kills, three aces, three digs and two blocks for the Rebels. Sam Cates finished with eight kills, two assists, two aces and two digs. Felicia Lynch handed out six assists and an ace, and Angelica Favela had four assists and two aces.

North Duplin is now 3-4 overall and 1-2 in conference play. The Rebels host conference foe Rosewood on Thursday.

Golden Falcons fall short

WILSON -- Charles B. Aycock dropped a key Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference match 25-18-, 25-19, 25-21 at Wilson Hunt on Tuesday.

Bridgette Briggs and Beth Carter each had seven kills for the Golden Falcons.

Aycock is now 2-7 overall and 1-2 in the ECC. The Golden Falcons continue conference play on Thursday when they host Eastern Wayne.

Chargers joust Knights

After a bit of a slow start, Wayne Country Day bounced back to defeat Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference foe Greenfield in four games 17-25, 25-14, 25-12, 25-10 on Tuesday.

Stephanie Sykes paced the Chargers with 10 aces, six digs and two kills against the Knights. Shelly Sullivan passed out 10 assists, to go with five digs, four kills and an ace.

Kim Martell had six digs and six kills. Sterling Coggins had six assists and two digs.

The Chargers improved to 7-2 overall and 6-1 in CPIC play. Wayne Country Day travels to Oakwood on Thursday.

Cross country

Aycock runners fare well

PIKEVILLE -- C.B. Aycock's Nik Fredrick and Caroline Schaeppli emerged the top runners during a three-team, Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference meet Tuesday afternoon.

Frederick posted a first-place time of 18 minutes, 31 seconds on the boys' side. Eastern Wayne claimed the team win, but no points were submitted with the results.

Schlaeppi turned in a time of 22:45 on the girls' side. The Warriors, behind Kelly Gregorcyk's second-place effort, claimed the team victory.

Grete Majerle earned the Saints' top time.

All three teams return to action Thursday in the Wayne County Championships, scheduled for a 4:30 p.m. start at Cliffs of the Neuse State Park.

* Volleyball -- North Lenoir improved to 11-0 overall and 2-0 in the Eastern Plains 2-A Conference with a 25-21, 25-11 win over conference foe North Pitt on Tuesday. Jenna Rouse ended the match with 12 service points, and Courtney Neal added eight service points. Kristen Davenport had four kills. The Hawks face conference opponent Greene Central on Tuesday.

* Volleyball -- Ayden-Grifton defeated North Duplin 25-16, 25-8. Kailey Odom had two aces and Scarlett Martin had one kill for the Rebels.

* Volleyball -- Wilson Hunt defeated Charles B. Aycock 25-16, 25-16. Chelsea Larson had three aces for the Golden Falcons. Aycock is now 5-4 overall and 2-1 in the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference. The Golden Falcons host Eastern Wayne on Thursday.

* Volleyball -- Rosewood defeated Spring Creek 25-12, 25-20. Megan Church had six aces and four assists for Spring Creek. Rachel Kornegay pounded out eight kills and an ace, and Chelsea Sawkin added three assists. The Gators are now 2-6 overall and 2-1 in Carolina 1-A Conference play.

* Tennis -- Charles B. Aycock defeated Southern Wayne on 8--1 on Tuesday. Hollie Baker, Alicia Sodoma, Nicole Kessler, Abbey Strickland, Harlie Howard and Sabrina Haverty had singles wins for the Golden Falcons. The doubles tandems of Baker-Sodoma, Kessler-Amanda Farmer and Bailey Dickens-Haley Taylor all prevailed for Aycock. The Golden Falcons are now 7-3 overall and 2-0 in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play. Aycock will host Eastern Wayne on Tuesday.

Middle schools

* Norwayne volleyball d. Grantham 25-18, 25-14, 24-26, 25-11 -- Connor Davis tallied 22 service points, and Courtney Gilbert and Rachel Jordan each had nine service points. Norwayne improves to 3-0 overall, and 1-0 in conference play, and will travel to Dillard on Tuesday.
