MOUNT OLIVE -- North Duplin seized two doubles points and edged two-time defending Carolina/Super Six 1-A Conference champion Rosewood 5-4 on the John Neal Walker Complex courts Thursday afternoon.

The Rebels' No. 2 tandem of Brittany Coley-Elizabeth Lane rolled past the Eagles' Jillian Casey-Marika Parrish 8-2. The third-seeded duo of Sarah Jackson-Jodie Williamson trounced Caroline Carswell-Taylor 8-1.

Williamson, Lane and Rebecca Coats each won a singles match for the Rebels, who remained unbeaten in four C/SS contests.

Missy Bailey, Erica Nichols and Ashli Allen each claimed a singles point for the Eagles, now 2-3 in the league. Bailey-Nichols also triumphed at No. 1 doubles.

Rams stun Gryphons

SNOW HILL -- For the second time in three days, Greene Central handed a state-ranked opponent its first defeat of the season.

This time, the Rams upended Rocky Mount 6-3 on the Snow Hill Tennis Complex courts Wednesday afternoon. The Gryphons entered the contest unbeaten in 10 outings and ranked among the state's top 10 teams.

"We both have our biggest conference matches of the year on Thursday, but despite that, both teams were very focused and fought hard on every point," said Greene Central head coach Donald Clark.

Greene Central (9-2 overall) faces Eastern Plains 2-A nemesis Tarboro today, while Rocky Mount opposes NEW Athletic 6 powerhouse Wilson Fike.

Third-set tiebreakers factored into three singles matches. The Rams won two and carried a 4-2 edge into doubles play. The second-seeded tandem of Abby Sugg-Lauren Carraway and Cally Hudson-Samantha Taylor helped seal the upset win.

Hudson, Carraway, Taylor and top-seeded Puja Patel prevailed in singles.

"I was very impressed with the way Rocky Mount kept coming after us even when they got down," said Clark.

Eagles prevail in CCC

Wayne Christian lost just two games in a combined nine matches during a 9-0 thrashing of Carolina Christian 1-A Conference foe Cresset Christian at Herman Park.

Brooke Barfield, Laura Lee Hodson, Cynthia Burroughs, Katie Fairchild, Samantha Reeves and Reagan Hinton each posted a shutout in singles. The same six players combined for three doubles points.

Saints crush Vikings

DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne logged four shutouts, two each in singles and doubles play, in a 9-0 shelling of Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference member Kinston.

Fifth-seeded Brianna Lofton and sixth-seeded Stephanie Cox each claimed a 6-0, 6-0 decision in singles. The Saints' top-seeded tandem of Katlyn Thornton-Lofton and Hirsch-Martin each prevailed 8-0 in doubles.

Hirsch, Thornton, Bowden and April Tucker all won in singles.

Southern Wayne (7-3 overall) improved to 2-1 in the ECC.

Rodriguez scores four goals

PIKEVILLE -- Alex Rodriguez followed up his hat trick performance against Greene Central on Tuesday with a four-goal game on Wednesday in leading Charles B. Aycock to a 8-0 win over Spring Creek.

Jorge Delgado opened the scoring for the Golden Falcons when he booted one in seven minutes into the game. C.P. Cranford and Tucker Pearson would also tally goals for Aycock.

Gavin Forrest and Pearson led the Golden Falcons with two assists. Andrew Musselman, Patrick Shultze and Delgado also had passes that led to scores.

Kyle LaFlamme held the Gators scoreless in goal with six saves.

Aycock (5-2-1 overall) opens Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference action Monday at Wilson Beddingfield.

Ellison's goal lifts Hawks

KINSTON -- Jaimie Ellison's first-half goal gave visiting North Lenoir at 1-0 victory over Kinston on Wednesday.

In the 24th minute, a deflected header from Thomas Faulkner found Ellison who booted the shot into the back of the net.

Strong play in goal by Bryce Grady -- who came away with nine saves -- kept Kinston scoreless.

North Lenoir (4-5-1 overall) opens Eastern Plains 2-A Conference play on Sept. 17 when it hosts Farmville Central.

Second-half outburst lifts Tigers

WARSAW -- James Kenan broke a scoreless, first-half tie with three second-half goals to beat Southern Wayne 3-1 on Wednesday.

Juan Castaneda, Gerardo Gutierres and Gibson Zuniga all scored goals for the Tigers.

Southern Wayne's lone goal was recorded by Carlos Zomita. Mario Aguilar had 15 saves in goal for the Saints.

Southern Wayne falls to 3-1 overall and next hosts Eastern Wayne on Sept. 17.

Volleyball

Faith Christian tops Liberty

FAYETTEVILLE -- Faith Christian improved to 4-1 overall with a 25-9, 14-25, 25-7, 25-16 win over Liberty of Fayetteville on Wednesday afternoon.

The Conquerors will next host Cornerstone on Friday afternoon.

Lewis sends Chargers to win

NEW BERN -- Jessica Lewis registered a team-high 12 kills to help Wayne Country Day to a 24-26, 25-20, 25-15, 25-14 victory over Epiphany on Tuesday.

Shelly Sullivan also came up big for the Chargers as she registered 15 assists to go along with five kills, four digs and three aces while Stephanie Sykes recorded six aces.

WCDS improves to 5-2 overall (3-1 Coastal Plains Independant 1-A Conference) and will play host to Oxford Orphanage today.

Lanier comes up big Hawks

LaGRANGE -- Marissa Lanier recorded nine kills in leading North Lenoir to a 25-11, 25-10, 25-13 win in its Eastern Plains 2-A Conference opener against Farmville Central on Tuesday.

Conner Jordan also had a big night for the Hawks with a team-high eight aces to go with five kills. Casey Harrison chipped in with five aces and Anna Kennedy had four kills.

North Lenoir stays perfect with the win, improving to 9-0 (1-0 EPC). The Hawks will next travel to Tarboro today.

Rams open EPC play with win

BETHEL -- Greene Central hit the road for a match up against North Pitt and left with a 25-10, 25-20, 25-13 win to open Eastern Plains 2-A Conference play on Tuesday night.

Elizabeth Webb and Meagan Shackleford both had strong games serving for the Rams.

Greene Central improves to 3-7 (1-0 EPC) and next hosts Goldsboro today.

JV sports

* Girls' tennis -- Eastern Wayne prevailed in five of six singles matches and swept the doubles in an 8-1 victory over North Lenoir. Janielle Daniel, Abigail Brown, Kristin Baddour, Margaret Guijarro and Caroline Jones each won in singles play. The Warriors' doubles were Taylor Falcone-Brandi Watson, Daniel-Joann Talton and Guijarro-Meghan Thompson.

* Girls' tennis -- Charles B. Aycock improved to 4-3 overall with a 7-2 win over Greenfield on Wednesday afternoon. Alicia Sodoma, Abbey Strickland, Harlie Howard, Alexia Torres all recorded singles victories for the Golden Falcons. The doubles' teams of Hollie Baker-Sodoma, Nicole Kessler-Strickland, Amanda Farmer-Haley Taylor also were all victorious. Aycock returns to action today when it plays Eastern Wayne at Herman Park.

* Volleyball -- Greene Central overcame an early loss in game one to top North Pitt 9-25, 25-7, 25-21 on Tuesday. Amanda Suggs led the Rams (7-2, 1-0 EPC) with five aces.

* Volleyball -- Wayne Christian continued its strong start as it defeated Cape Fear 23-25, 25-22, 25-14 on Tuesday. The Eagles improved to 7-1 (5-1 Carolina Christian 1-A Conference) and next travel to Cross Roads Christian on Sept. 21.
