Peterson looks to build on tradition

Rod Peterson, an 11-year veteran in the classroom, has been named the new athletics director at Goldsboro High School.
Peterson replaces Randy Jordan, who served as AD and men's basketball coach for six seasons. Jordan resigned in July to take a similar position at Cary Academy.
"This is a very exciting opportunity," Peterson said. ""It is my hope to build off of what coach Jordan had established, and really work to bring back the prominence that Goldsboro High athletics has been known for in years past."
Peterson assisted Jordan for four seasons.
Understanding both sides of the spectrum, Peterson recognizes the importance of helping student-athletes achieve in and outside the classroom.
"Athletics can be very temporary," Peterson said. "All it takes is a bad injury to end it all for a player, but academics is forever. Although some players may be able to further their athletic career in college and profession sports, there are many whose athletic careers end at graduation.
"It is my goal to help students stay focused on their education, so they will be successful in life, long after the final buzzer rings."
Peterson's appointment is a good fit.
"Ms. (Patricia) Burden (GHS principal) has made an excellent choice in selecting Mr. Peterson for this position," Dean Sauls, Wayne County Public Schools athletics director, said. "He has worked hard in the classroom, and helped coach Jordan admirably for the last four years.
"He also understands the students and the expectations of the community."
A tradition-rich program across the board for many decades, Peterson hopes to rejuvenate community pride -- in the athletes, coaches, students and families. His expectations might be considered lofty by some, but he's confident the tradition can be restored.
"For years, Goldsboro High School was known around the state for the high caliber of athletes it produced," Peterson said. "I welcome theopportunity to be a part of the community's dream to help restore Goldsboro High School's athletic program to the level it once was."
Peterson's major responsibility is finding Jordan's successor. The Cougars finished 15-12 this past season and advanced to the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 2-A sectional semifinals. Two players signed scholarships -- Daquan Joyner (East Carolina) and Tim Kornegay (USC Salkehatchie).
"I have looked at several potential candidates, and am currently in the process of working with Ms. Burden to narrow down the selection to just one,'' Peterson said. "I am optimistic that we will be able to name our new basketball coach soon."
