BEULAVILLE -- Abby Sugg claimed a straight-set win and Puja Patel triumphed in her debut as Greene Central upset previously-unbeaten East Duplin 6-3 on Wednesday afternoon.

The Rams (6-2 overall) entered the non-conference contest ranked No. 5 in the latest N.C. High School Tennis Coaches Association Class 2-A poll. The Panthers (4-1) came in ranked No. 3.

Sugg turned back Meredith Grady 6-1, 6-4 for her seventh singles victory in eight tries.

"Abby came up with a big win for us today," said Greene Central coach Donald Clark. " She played an almost flawless first set and fought her way through a tough second set. She is becoming a really steady player in the middle of our lineup."

The top-seeded Patel, fifth-seeded Lauren Carraway and sixth-seeded Samantha Taylor each recorded a singles point for the Rams.

"We beat a great team today," said Clark. "East Duplin is certainly deserving of its high ranking in the 2-A state poll."

PIKEVILLE -- Top-seeded Kristen Prosser had another strong match as Charles B. Aycock registered a 9-0, non-conference win over North Lenoir on Wednesday afternoon.

Prosser defeated Heather Phillips 6-0, 6-2 to get Aycock rolling.

Jessica Davis, Mallory Strickland and Ashley Howell each recorded a 6-0, 6-0 victory for the Golden Falcons.

Saints double up Gators

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Southern Wayne took four of six singles matches to edge Spring Creek 6-3 on Wednesday afternoon.

The Gators took 2-0 lead after Jamie Johnson and Mary Elizabeth West completed two hard fought, three-set matches against Tara Hirsch and Katelyn Thorton. The Saints rebounded to take the next four singles matches.

Amber Bowden, April Tucker and Stephanie Cox all recorded wins for Southern Wayne. The Saints then took the two of three doubles matches to seal the win.

Spring Creek fell to 1-3 overall.

Hawks on a roll

LaGRANGE -- Outside hitter Marissa Lanier collected 10 kills as unbeaten North Lenoir swept C.B. Aycock 25-10, 25-11, 25-21 on Wednesday afternoon.

Anna Kennedy and Casey Harrison each served two aces.

Beth Carter recorded five kills for the Golden Falcons, who fell to 1-5 overall. Dana Jones notched three aces.

On Tuesday, the Hawks trounced county rival Kinston 25-13, 25-19, 25-22. Lanier contributed 10 kills, while Kayla Sutton supplied eight kills.

Conner Jordan and Kennedy added six kills apiece.

North Lenoir (7-0 overall) entertains Southern Wayne today.

Fike spikes Rams

WILSON -- Amber Morris' five kills wasn't enough as Greene Central fell to Wilson Fike 25-17, 25-16, 25-12 on Wednesday evening.

Jennifer Jones tallied a team-high seven assists for the Rams.

Greene Central (1-6 overall) plays host to Ayden-Grifton today.

Smith leads Gators

SPIVEY'S CORNER -- Kristin Smith posted a team-high 17 kills as Spring Creek turned back Midway 18-25, 25-13, 25-22, 21-25, 15-11 in non-conference play.

Ashley Barwick dished out 11 assists and Brandi Simpkins served four aces.

Spring Creek (4-0 overall) entertains Wayne Christian today.

Lakewood sweeps Rebels

SALEMBURG -- Lakewood took all three games from visiting North Duplin 25-16, 25-11, 25-17 on Wednesday.

North Duplin was led by Heather Hudson who recorded five kills and four digs. Sam Cates chipped in with four kills and Felicia Lynch had four assists and three digs.

The Rebels dropped to 1-2 overall.

Conquerors ace Victory

ELIZABETH CITY -- Brooke Anderson recorded 11 kills and six digs as Faith Christian opened its season with an 18-25, 25-22, 25-15, 25-18 triumph over Victory Christian.

Kaitlyn Floars added seven aces, four kills and a block. Alyssa Hill had four kills, one dig and an ace. Heather Crumpler also added four kills, one dig and an ace.

Faith Christian (1-0 overall) entertains Mt. Calvary on Friday.

Soccer

Eagles, Hawks tie

Goals by Jared Bland and Nick Wallace enabled visiting North Lenoir to come away with a 2-2 tie against Rosewood on Wednesday afternoon.

Rosewood got two goals from Elliott Lee and an assist from Leo Verceles-Zara.

North Lenoir (3-3-1) entertains Southern Wayne today, while Rosewood (0-2-1) is the guest of Wayne Country Day.

Cross country

Golden Falcons prevail

WILSON -- Nik Fredrick and Dontay Woodard placed second and third respectively to lead Charles B. Aycock to a 24-33 win over host Wilson Beddingfield on Tuesday afternoon.

Fredrick recorded an overall time of 19 minutes, 21 seconds on the 3.1-mile course while Woodard came in at 20:32.

In the girls' race, Beddingfield only raced a single runner, giving the Golden Falcons the uncontested win.

Caroline Schlaeppi finished first with a time of 24:40.

Saints take opener

SMITHFIELD -- Southern Wayne got solid play from a trio of players in its season opener, en route to downing North Johnston 150-189 at The Cardinal Golf and Country Club.

Jordan Hill fired a 47 while Alyssa Bradshaw carded a 51 and Taylor Reeves finished with a scored of 52. Amber Gray led North Johnston with a 53 and Mandy Narron netted a 64. Maggie Banks finished with a score of 72.

Southern Wayne will return to action on today when it travels to Havelock.

* Tennis -- C.B. Aycock had no trouble defeating North Lenoir as it won 9-0 on Wednesday. Hollie Baker, Alicia Sodoma, Abbey Strickland, Harlie Howard, Haley Taylor and Bailey Dickens are registered victories for the Golden Falcons. Aycock improves to 3-2 overall and next hosts Greene Central on Sept. 11.

* Volleyball -- North Lenoir took two of three games from C.B. Aycock, winning 25-13, 22-25, 25-16 on Wednesday. Jenna Rouse, Courtney Hill and Chelsea Edmundson registered three kills each for the Hawks. Victoria Benton tallied four aces for the Golden Falcons (3-3 overall). The Hawks (7-0) face Southern Wayne today.

* Volleyball -- Shaunice Pettaway had a team-high six kills to propel Greene Central to a 14-25, 25-23, 25-22 victory over Wilson Fike on Wednesday. The Rams improve to 5-2 overall and next host Ayden-Grifton today.

* Volleyball -- Princeton came into Eastern Wayne and left with a 25-21, 25-23 win over the Warriors.

* Volleyball -- The Eagles topped Fayetteville Christian 25-16, 25-15 on Tuesday. The Conquerors are now 5-0. Charity Wright had six aces while Brittany O'Harra had three aces.

* Volleyball -- Midway proved to be too much for Spring Creek as the Raiders won 25-20, 25-4 on Wednesday. Alex Benton led the Gators with three kills while Rani Oxendine contributed three assists.

* Volleyball -- Lakewood kept North Duplin winless as it defeated the Rebels in two games 25-14, 25-9. Angelica Favela led the Rebels (0-3) with one kill and two digs.
