PRINCETON -- Brittani Billups and Jordei Osby combined for 23 kills as the Eastern Wayne volleyball team swept Princeton 25-14, 25-15, 25-12 in non-conference play Thursday evening.

Billups and Osby also combined for three blocks as the Warriors climbed to 4-0 overall.

Brooke Newsome handed out 20 assists and served five aces. Regan Stoneburner supplied six consecutive aces and seven overall in the three-set victory.

Carrie Adams contributed six kills, while Anna Hajjar and Brianna Williams combined for 20 digs defensively.

Brittany Baker tallied three kills and Amber Wood had four assists for Princeton.

Eagles upend Jags

Rosewood played a tightly contested five games and defeated Farmville Central 25-20, 24-26, 18-25, 25-18, 15-13 on Thursday.

Taylor Johnson and Ashley Williams both piled up a career-high 13 kills to lead the Eagles, who improved to 2-2 overall. Paige Babb contributed 15 assists while Jennifer Hall added 12 assists for Rosewood.

The teams meet again Sept. 4.

Rebels prevail

NEWTON GROVE -- The young North Duplin Rebels with only one senior defeated Hobbton in four games 25-21, 12-25, 25-22, 25-23 on Thursday.

Heath Hudson -- who recently recovered from a broken ankle -- had a big day with 10 kills, six blocks, three service aces and three digs for the Rebels. Sam Cates recorded a team-high six assists while Katlyn Eloshway and Felicia Lynch both had five aces.

North Duplin rose to 1-1 overall.

WCDS splits matches

Wayne Country Day started its Class 1-A Coastal Plains Independent Conference season with a 25-6, 25-14, 25-20 shelling of Faith Christian-Rocky Mount.

Jessica Lewis paced the Chargers with 11 kills, while Shelly Sullivan passed out 10 assists. Sterling Coggins contributed eight assists and three aces.

Lewis collected 13 kills and Sullivan dished out 20 assists in Wayne Country Day's 12-25, 25-17, 9-25, 25-21, 12-15 non-conference loss against Parrott Academy on Wednesday.

Sullivan finished with three kills, two digs and two service aces. Coggins served three aces and dished out nine assists.

Stephanie Sykes contributed eight kills, three aces and three digs. Kim Martell (five aces) and Erin Taylor provided three kills apiece.

The Chargers (3-1 overall, 1-0 CPIC) entertain Kerr-Vance on Sept. 4.

Gryphons clip Aycock

PIKEVILLE -- Senior Kristen Prosser and fifth-seeded Jessica Davis each earned a singles victory during Charles B. Aycock's 6-2, non-conference loss against Rocky Mount on Thursday afternoon.

Prosser, the Golden Falcons' top seed, turned back Ashley Pearsall 6-4, 6-3. Davis, a first-year starter, outlasted Hannah Becillia 4-6, 6-4, 10-7.

"Kristen played an excellent match at No. 1 singles," said Aycock coach Luke Vail. "Jessica showed great consistency and determination."

C.B. Aycock (3-3 overall) opens defense of its Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference title Tuesday at Wilson Beddingfield.

E. Duplin tops Gators

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Playing its third match of the week, Spring Creek lost its legs against East Duplin and fell 7-2 on Thursday afternoon.

Top seed Jamie Johnson for Spring Creek defeated Laura Outlaw 6-4, 3-6 (10-8). Third-seeded Isabelle Messelken also won for the Gators as she topped Alexandra Miller 6-3, 6-2.

Saints blank Eagles

DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne took all nine matches against Rosewood winning 9-0 on Thursday afternoon.

Singles winners for Southern Wayne included Tara Hirsch, Katlyn Thornton, Amber Bowden, April Tucker, Brianna Lofton and Stephanie Cox.

The doubles tandems of Thornton-Lofton, Bowden-Tucker and Hirsch-Emily Martin also swept their matches against the Eagles.

Ridgecroft rams WCDS

Ahoskie Ridgecroft tallied two late second-half goals and handed Wayne Country Day a 3-1 loss in Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference action Thursday afternoon.

The Rams took an early one-goal lead, but the Chargers answered when striker David Wilson converted a beautiful crossing pass from Matt Wolf. The teams entered intermission tied at 1-1.

WCDS played a man down because of a red card in the second half. Despite owning an 8-5 edge in shots on goal, the Chargers (2-3 overall, 0-2 CPIC) couldn't find the net again.

Wayne Country Day travels to Oakwood on Tuesday.

Cross country

Eagles run well

Josh Magnus and Jennifer Price each emerged victorious during Wayne Christian's non-conference meet against Flora MacDonald Academy.

Each Eagles' squad posted a 15-50 win since the Cougars didn't bring enough runners to field a team.

Magnus crossed the start-finish line in 18 minutes, 47 seconds. Price posted a time of 25:24.

Wayne Christian travels to Kerr-Vance Academy today.

Rams split with Devils

DEEP RUN -- Greene Central's girls defeated South Lenoir -- who competed with just two runners 25-50 while the Rams' boys fell 17-45.

After losing out on the top two spots, Greene Central took the remaining five places paced by Mackenzie Moore's 27:03 time for the 3.1 mile course.

Chris Nethercutt ran an outstanding race for the boys, placing fourth with a sub-20 minute time of 18:26.

Golf

Reeves fires 81

Jasmine Reeves turned in her best score of her high school career with an 81, but it wasn't enough for Eastern Wayne in a 258-289, non-conference loss against New Bern.

Erica Freeman carded a 95 for the Warriors. Madison Sauls contributed a 113, followed by Hannah Grantham (118). Courtney Wegman and Katie Parrish also participated in the dual meet.

Eastern Wayne plays host to Wilson Fike on Tuesday.

Fumbles doom Cougars

Durham Hillside cashed in two Goldsboro fumbles and held on for a 12-6, non-conference win Thursday evening at Cougar Stadium.

Goldsboro (0-2 overall) opened the scoring in the first quarter when Tyre' Vaughn scored from 5-yards out and Darius Curry added the two-point conversion to make it 8-0 Cougars.

Durham Hillside recovered a fumble off a punt that had bounced off the back of a Goldsboro player and received great field position inside the Cougars' 40-yard line. The Hornets punched the ball in to pull to within 8-6.

The Hornets got the winning score in the third quarter when Goldsboro fumbled at its own 1-yard line and Hillside recovered in the end zone.

For Goldsboro, Andray Montgomery rushed 11 times for 50 yards and added six tackles. Quarterback Cortez Sprangle was 7-for-8 for 75 yards. Michael Sykes caught four passes.

Freddy Jones led the defensive effort for the Cougars with eight tackles while Diante Lender recorded five.

Aycock outscores GC

PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock used a 20-point second quarter to help defeat Greene Central 34-22 on Thursday evening at Hardy Talton Stadium.

Shepard Whitfield (94 yards) and Shalando McBride (69 yards, two touchdowns) paced the Golden Falcons' ground attack. Woodard (two touchdowns) and Davonte Pettaway also contributed for the Golden Falcons, now 1-1 overall.

Quarterback David Gurganus completed 3 of 5 passes for 76 yards and a touchdown.

The Aycock defense forced three Greene Central interceptions. J.J. King, Whitfield and Woodard came away with the picks.

Tanner notches goal

Hil Tanner converted a penalty kick and Wayne Country Day battled to a 1-1 draw with Ahoskie Ridgecroft on Tuesday afternoon.

Dawgs outlast Warriors

PRINCETON -- Princeton handed Eastern Wayne a 25-8, 19-25, 25-21 non-conference defeat Thursday afternoon.

The Warriors are now 1-3 overall.

NL stops Aycock

PIKEVILLE -- North Lenoir took care of Charles B. Aycock in two games 25-21, 25-21 on Thursday.

Victoria Benton led the Golden Falcons with four aces as they fell to 2-2 overall.

Hobbton downs Rebels

NEWTON GROVE -- Hobbton had little trouble against North Duplin as it defeated the Rebels 25-8, 25-4 on Thursday.

Kailey Odom tallied one kill and one dig for North Duplin who remains winless at 0-2.
