Wayne Christian's Jennifer Price and Josh Magnus emerged the top girls' and boys' runner during a season-opening, three-team cross country meet Monday afternoon.

Price ran the 3.1-mile course in 25 minutes, 7 seconds. Meanwhile, Magnus posted a meet-winning time of 18:34.

No team scores were kept since neither Northwood Temple nor Cresset Christian had enough runners to field a team.

Wayne Christian entertains Flora MacDonald Academy on Thursday.

Aycock, Clayton play to draw

CLAYTON -- C.B. Aycock and Clayton played to 1-1 tie Monday evening.

Alex Roosen scored from short range on an assist from Alex Rodriguez in the 51st minute, giving the Golden Falcons a 1-0 lead.

Justin Nanangas knotted things up in the 56th minute for Clayton. Both teams finished with 14 shots on goal.

C.B. Aycock coach Kevin Adkins said he was very pleased with the way his team played defensively.

Aycock (1-1-1 overall) travels to Wilson Fike on Wednesday.

Hawks rough up Blue Devils

DEEP RUN -- North Lenoir cruised past South Lenoir 6-3 on Monday night.

C.C. Croom led North Lenoir with three goals, including two in the second half.

The Hawks led 3-1 at halftime, before pulling away in the second half. Hugo Garcia added a goal and an assist for North Lenoir.

The Hawks improve to 2-2 and will host Rosewood on Wednesday.

GC doubles up Gators

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Greene Central fought off a hard charge from Spring Creek to earn a 5-4 win in girl's tennis on Monday afternoon.

Abby Sugg, Lauren Carraway and Samantha Taylor were all singles winners for Greene Central. Jamie Johnson, Mary Elizabeth West and Isabelle Messelken each took home singles victories for the Gators.

The duo of Johnson and West started off doubles play with an 8-2 victory for Spring Creek over Ashley Grant and Cally Hudson. Elizabeth McLawhorn and Lauren Carraway answered with an 8-4 win for Greene Central, topping Messelken and Rachel Lewis. With the match tied at 4-4, Sugg and Taylor won the final doubles match of the day 8-1, downing Ivey Best and Jamison Mossbery 8-1 to seal the win for Greene Central.

"We escaped with a win at Spring Creek today against a very good 1-A team," Greene Central coach Donald Clark said. "Spring Creek pulled out three very close matches at the top of the lineup in singles, so we had to take two doubles matches for the win."

Greene Central improves to 3-1 overall, while Spring Creek starts 0-1. Greene Central will be back in action on Wednesday when it travels to Rocky Mount.

Eagles stumble on the road

DURHAM -- Wayne Christian fell from the unbeaten ranks with a 25-21, 25-22, 25-13 loss against perennial power Cresset Christian on Monday afternoon.

Katie Daniels finished with four kills and two blocks, while Hope Wright added five kills and two blocks for Wayne Christian. Traci Davis also had two kills.

The Eagles (2-1 overall) fell to 2-1 in Class 1-A Carolina Christian Conference play. They entertain Norlina on Friday.

Warriors claim 5-set thriller

NEW BERN -- Jordei Osby and Brittani Billups turned in double-digit kill efforts as Eastern Wayne escaped New Bern 25-21, 12-25, 20-25, 25-14, 17-15 on Monday afternoon.

Osby provided 11 kills and three blocks for the Warriors, who remained unbeaten in two outings. Billups contributed a team-high 18 kills, eight digs, four service aces and one block.

"We started out flat and didn't pick up until we got our backs to the wall in that fourth game," said Eastern Wayne head coach Bruce Burridge. "We didn't play the same kind of tempo like we did against Havelock. We just didn't click."

Brooke Newsome dished out 33 assists and collected 16 digs. Brianna Williams picked up 12 digs, while Anna Hajjar supplied six kills, six aces, 12 digs and two blocks.

Carrie Adams added five kills, five aces, two digs and two blocks.

The Warriors entertain Jacksonville White Oak today.

Bears escape Warriors

NEW BERN -- Eastern Wayne took the opening set, but New Bern rallied for a 20-25, 25-19, 25-23 non-conference win on Monday afternoon.

The Warriors (0-2 overall) play host to Jacksonville White Oak today.

W. Christian rallies past Cresset

After dropping the opening game, Wayne Christian came from behind to defeat Cresset 18-25, 25-7, 25-23 on Monday afternoon.

Christian Branyon and Sherry Wright each had three aces for the Eagles.
