CBA netters shut out North Lenoir

SNOW HILL -- Charles B. Aycock swept the singles matches in a 6-0, non-conference victory over North Lenoir on the Snow Hill Tennis Complex courts Tuesday afternoon.

Top-seeded Kristen Prosser and third-seeded Emilee Quinn each posted a shutout. Courtney Barnes, Mallory Strickland and Lauren Pierce dropped one game apiece.

Jessica Davis upended Morgan Heath 8-3 at the No. 4 slot.

The doubles were not contested due to the extreme heat.

The Golden Falcons remained unbeaten in two outings, while the Hawks were playing their season-opening match.

Eagles fall on road

ROCKY MOUNT -- Faith Christian of Rocky Mount prevailed in two of three doubles matches and turned back Wayne Christian 5-4 on Tuesday afternoon.

Brooke Barfield, Laura Lee Hodson and Reagan Hinton had singles wins for Wayne Christian. The tandem of Barfield-Hodson claimed the lone doubles win for the Eagles.

It was Wayne Christian's season-opening match.

Delgado scores 4 goals

PIKEVILLE -- Jorge Delgado accounted for four goals as C.B. Aycock dumped North Lenoir 4-1 in a rain-shortened, non-conference match Tuesday evening.

After Ethan Schill scored the Hawks' lone goal, Delgado answered with a natural hat trick (three straight goals) to give the Golden Falcons a 3-1 lead at intermission.

Delgado collected his fourth goal early in the second half before officials called the game due to heavy thunderstorms in the area.

C.B. Aycock (1-1 overall) returns to action Monday at Clayton. North Lenoir fell to 1-1.

Wolfs lead W. Country Day

GREENVILLE -- Will Wolf and Matt Wolf shouldered the scoring load in Wayne Country Day's season-opening, 3-0 shutout over Greenville Christian on Tuesday afternoon.

Will tallied two goals, while Matt provided one.

"The heat was pretty terrible so the game was a little slow," said first-year WCDS head coach Baron Heinemann.

The Chargers (1-0 overall) entertain Parrott Academy on Friday.

Volleyball

S. Central sweeps Saints

DUDLEY -- Middle hitter Clarice Sherard and Morgan Davis collected three kills apiece in Southern Wayne's season-opening 25-14, 25-23, 25-14 loss to perennial 3-A power South Central.

Lindsey Pearsall served five aces for the Saints.

"They were a very good, consistent team and we didn't play bad," said second-year Southern Wayne head coach Colby Mangum.

The Saints (0-1 overall) entertain North Lenoir on Thursday.

Eagles open with win

DUNN -- Rosewood used a balanced attack to take down Midway 22-25, 25-17, 25-22, 26-24 on Tuesday evening.

Taylor Johnson had a strong game for Rosewood with eight kills, four blocks and one ace. Ashley Williams added seven kills. Paige Babb provided three aces and 11 assists for the Eagles.

Rosewood (1-0 overall) plays host to Union next Tuesday.

N. Lenoir dumps S. Lenoir

DEEP RUN -- North Lenoir opened its 2007 season with a big win over arch-rival South Lenoir -- 25-16, 16-25, 25-15, 25-21 -- on Tuesday evening.

Kayla Sutton led the Hawks with 11 kills while Conner Jordan added eight kills. Jordan Hudson had a team-high 31 assists for North Lenoir.

North Lenoir (1-0 overall) travels to Southern Wayne on Thursday.

Rams lose in four sets

KINSTON -- After dropping the first game to Kinston 25-17, Greene Central rebounded to outscore Kinston 25-22 before eventually falling to the Vikings 25-15 and 25-17.

Amber Morris led the Rams with nine kills.

Daniels sparks W. Christian

Wayne Christian opened its season with a 25-22, 24-26, 25-10, 25-18 win over Northwood Temple on Tuesday afternoon.

Katie Daniels had a big day for the Eagles as she recorded 11 kills and five aces. Brooke Norris added eight kills, five aces and 16 assists while Traci Davis tallied seven kills and six aces for Wayne Christian.

The Eagles improve to 1-0 (1-0) and will travel to Community Christian in Wilson on Friday.

Clayton stops Aycock

PIKEVILLE -- C.B. Aycock emerged victorious in the opening set, but Clayton stormed back for a 23-25, 25-14, 25-17, 25-15 victory on Tuesday afternoon.

Beth Carter led the Golden Falcon attack with 11 kills. Emily Jordan served six aces.

The teams meet again Thursday.

Eagles come from behind

Wayne Christian began its season in successful fashion with a 23-25, 25-15, 25-21 victory over Northwood Temple at Clifford Gymnatorium on Tuesday afternoon.

Raiders cruise

DUNN -- Midway had little trouble with Rosewood on Tuesday as they defeated the Eagles 25-8, 25-8.

Rosewood is now 0-1 overall.

Hawks upend Devils

DEEP RUN -- North Lenoir took two of three games from rival South Lenoir on Tuesday as it won 25-20, 22-5, 25-17.

Jamie Phillips had a strong game serving for the Hawks while Bethany Fillipteli had 10 assists.

North Lenoir improved to 1-0 overall.

G. Central trumps Vikings

KINSTON -- Greene Central topped Kinston 25-18, 21-25, 25-17 for its first win of the young season on Monday.

Amanda Everett led the Rams with 14 points.

Golden Falcons come back

PIKEVILLE -- C.B. Aycock rebounded from a second-set loss and upended Clayton 25-23, 21-25, 25-18 on Tuesday afternoon.

Victoria Benton and Cara Frederick each served three aces for the Golden Falcons.

PIKEVILLE -- Four players combined for four goals and C.B. Aycock benefited from an own goal in a 5-1 trouncing of North Lenoir.

Jeff Lynch, William Tamura, Tyson Pearson and Travis Musselman each scored for the Golden Falcons.

Robb Harrell tallied the Hawks' lone goal.

C.B. Aycock improved to 1-1 overall.

CBA rolls over N. Lenoir

PIKEVILLE -- C.B. Aycock had a successful season-opening match as it defeated North Lenoir 9-0 on Tuesday afternoon.

Top-seeded Hollie Baker of the Golden Falcons defeated Magen Malpass of North Lenoir 8-0 to open the match.

Alicia Sodoma, Nicole Kessler, Abbey Strickland, Amanda Farmer and Harlie Howard all added singles wins for Aycock.

The tandems of Kessler-Strickland, Farmer-Alexia Torres and Bailey Dickens-Haleigh Taylor were all victorious as well.

C.B. Aycock (1-0 overall) visits Greene Central on Thursday afternoon.

Walnut Creek Ladies

Betty Holloway emerged play-of-the-day winner during weekly tournament action at Walnut Creek Country Club.

Josie Ottaviani and Nancy Satterfield took low gross and low net, respectively. Gaye Bryant won low putts.
