K-Tribe claims doubleheader

KINSTON -- Right-handed pitchers Frank Herrmann and Ryan Edell emerged victorious on the mound as Kinston swept Salem 6-1 and 5-2 at historic Grainger Stadium on Monday evening.

Herrmann (9-5) tossed his third complete game of the season -- a seven-inning, five-hit gem that snapped the Avalanche's six-game win streak. Herrmann held Salem hitless after the second inning and retired 13 consecutive batters during one stretch.

In the opener, Kinston collected all six runs in the second inning.

Chris Gimenez smacked a lead-off double and trotted home on Wes Hodges' two-RBI home run. Johnny Drennen singled and Jerad Head got hit by a pitch to keep the rally intact.

Jerad Goedert cleared the bases with a three-run blast and Matt Whitney concluded the scoring with an RBI single.

Called up from Low A Lake County, hired gun Josh Tomlin worked three innings and yielded two hits in the nightcap. Edell provided three innings of one-hit relief from the bullpen and earned his team-leading 11th win of the season.

Scott Roehl recorded a perfect ninth for his Carolina League-leading 21st save of the season.

Kinston's offense continue to explode in game two. Head clubbed a first-inning, two-RBI double and Armando Camacaro delivered an RBI single to make it 3-0.

Hodges belted his second homer of the night in the third inning. Overall, Kinston slugged three round-trippers in the doubleheader sweep and boosted their season total to 127 -- second-best in franchise history behind the 1997 team which drilled 185 homers.

Salem entered the twinbill just 4 1/2 games behind Kinston in Southern Division play. The Avalanche exited six games down.

The teams continue their six-game series today with a single contest starting at 7 p.m. They'll play a doubleheader Wednesday and finish with one game on Thursday.
