COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. -- The Wayne County Bobcats 12U baseball team endured their first defeat during pool play at Cooperstown Dreamspark on Tuesday evening.

The Chester County (Pa.) Crawdads bumped the Bobcats from the unbeaten ranks with a 5-4, extra-inning victory. Earlier in the day, Wayne County claimed its second shutout with a 15-0 rout of the Pickering (Canada) Red Sox.

"It was a heartbreaker," Bobcats coach Chad Pate said of the loss.

Zack Harold homered in a 3-for-3 effort. Adam Pate, Dylan Smith, Greg Johnson and Josh Edwards supplied one hit apiece.

Pate, Edwards, Harold and Smith each saw time on the mound.

Pate homered and walked twice against Pickering. Harold and Reid Howell each recorded a 2-for-3 outing.

Smith, Justin Lee and Jacob Sasser each contributed a hit.

Johnson and Howell combined for the pitching win.

Wayne County (5-1) concluded pool play this morning against the CNY Pioneers American team. A victory assures the Bobcats of advancing to the single-elimination portion of the tournament.

Junior Legion

Post 11 eliminated, finishes 3rd overall

CHERRYVILLE -- Wayne County South Post 11 rallied for six runs in the latter stages of Sunday afternoon's contest, but dropped a season-ending 8-6 decision to Kernersville Post 56 in the American Junior Legion state tournament.

Post 11 banged out 12 hits in its final outing. Tyler Edwards (RBI), Cody Richards (RBI), Scott Holloman (RBI), Stephen Bostic and Michael Douglass collected two hits apiece.

Matt Neal and Taylor Allen each batted 1-for-4.

Jordan Williams supplied a sacrifice RBI.

Wayne County South (17-16 overall) scratched for a single run in the fourth inning, three in the fifth and two in the sixth. Head coach Chuck Crumpler said his team left the bases loaded in the sixth and put runners aboard in the seventh, but "we hit hard ground balls right at some people."

Kernersville bolted to an 8-0 lead against Post 11 hurler Kevin Prunest in the elimination-round game. Raymond Velasquez and Neal combined for six-plus innings of scoreless relief.

"The guys had a great year and they finally realized what it means to play as a team," said Crumpler. "I'm extremely proud of these guys for what they have accomplished."

Walnut Creek Ladies Association

Josie Ottaviani emerged the play-of-the-day winner during weekly tournament play at Walnut Creek Country Club.

Kathy Woodward took low gross and Faye Franklin claimed low net. Gaye Bryant seized low putts.
