K-Tribe sweeps doubleheader from Potomac

KINSTON -- Mired in a mild slump to start second-half play, Kinston dismantled Potomac on Wednesday evening at historic Grainger Stadium.

Jerad Head homered in a 4-for-4 outing as the K-Tribe pounded the Nationals 12-2 in the completion of Tuesday's suspended game. In the nightcap, Frank Herrmann retired 10 consecutive batters in four-plus innings in a 4-2 victory.

Kinston, which had lost in six of its last 10 contests, improved to 14-9 in second-half play.

Head doubled and singled twice to lead the K-Tribe's 12-hit parade in the opener.

"I went through a little slump over the past couple of weeks," says Head. "I've been working extra the past few days and on the road trip. Tonight I was more selective at the plate, looking more for my pitch and I got some of those pitches and capitalize on them."

Matt Whitney supplied two bases-loaded hits and finished with five RBI.

Kinston batted around in the third and fifth innings, and tallied five runs on each occasion. Mike Finocchi emerged the winning pitcher.

In the nightcap, Herrmann (7-4) posted a season-high six strikeouts and yielded one earned in five innings.

"I felt good, I had a good feeling going into the game early on," said Herrmann "I just relaxed and realized things couldn't get worse than they were going for me, I just went out and threw and the results were good."

Wes Hodges supported Herrmann's effort with a two-out, third-inning double. Josh Rodriguez and Stephen Head scored, which boosted Kinston's advantage to 3-0.

Erik Stiller threw the sixth and Scott Roehl cleaned up in the seventh for his Carolina League-leading 16th save of the season.

The teams conclude their four-game series tonight. Kinston hurler Ryan Edell goes for his 10th decision. Game time is 7 p.m.
