Three Wayne County golfers are tied for 16th overall in the boys 18U division after opening-round play of the Roy Jones-Clarence Rose Junior Golf Classic.
Ryan Campbell, a rising sophomore at Pitt Community College; Will Vinson, a Barton College signee and Wayne Christian standout Hayden Gardner each carded a 6-over par 78 at Walnut Creek on Tuesday. The trio trails leader Bo Andrews of Raleigh, who fired a 4-under 68.
Adam Stephenson of Greenville and Jacob Colley of Holly Springs enter today's final round at Kinston Country Club two strokes behind Andrews.
On the girls' scene, the state's top-ranked golfer -- Meghan Moore -- fashioned a 2-over par 73 at Kinston Country Club. Moore leads Wilson's Amy Otteson and Wendell's Ashley Denton by three strokes.
Otteson won the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 3-A eastern regional individual championship in 2005.
Raleigh's Wilson Day notched a 2-under par 70 and emerged the boys' 15-16 leader. Southern Pines' Robert Hoadley, ranked No. 3 on the N.C. Junior boys scene, is one stroke back.
High Point's David Womble owns a four-stroke edge over Washington's Joshua Chandler in the boys' 13-14 division. Kinston's Riley Davis has a two-stroke advantage over Greensboro's Chandler Upchurch in the boys' 11-12 division.
Ian Wickline and Elizabeth Davis lead the boys' 10U and girls' 12U divisions, respectively.
Also locally, Goldsboro's Nick Adams and Kyle Best turned in solid opening rounds in 12U competition. Bryson Tart is competing in the boys' 14U and Jasmine Reeves, a rising sophomore at Eastern Wayne, is battling in the girls 18U ranks.
The 18U and 16U boys will finish play today at Kinston Country Club. The remaining divisions will duel on the challenging Walnut Creek Country Club links.
The two-day Classic is sponsored by BB&T and Goldsboro Builders Supply.
