Golfers go after Junior Classic title

When competitors teed off in the second annual Roy Jones-Clarence Rose Junior Golf Classic this morning, none had to worry about chasing the defending champions.

Taylor Zimmerman, a rising senior, has a conflict with the PGA Westfield Junior Championship. Colleen Estes, an East Carolina University signee, is participating in the U.S. Women's Amateur qualifier. Those absences leave the boy's and girl's field wide open.

The 36-hole, stroke-play event will be contested on two challenging courses -- Walnut Creek and Kinston Country Club. The boys in the 16U and 18U groups played at Walnut Creek today, and will conclude tournament play Wednesday at Kinston CC.

Five divisions started at Kinston -- 10U, 12U and 14U for the boys; and 12U and 18U for the girls. Those golfers will move to Walnut Creek on Wednesday.

"The first year of this event was very successful," said Kevin Williams, who recently resigned as the Walnut Creek golf pro. "The combination of two wonderful courses, a strong field for both the girls and boys divisions; and generous sponsors is a winning formula for this junior golf event."

The Carolinas Golf Association has awarded the event with a "five" multiplier for the N.C. Junior Golf Rankings.

"Because of the increased rankings-point multiplier, we have a very strong field this year, especially in the girls division," said Burt Williams, head PGA professional at Kinston CC. "The number one-ranked junior in the state, Meghan Moore, is signed up along with 10 other girls ranked in the top 30.

"On the boys' side, the number three-ranked junior in the state, Robert Hoadley, is expected to compete."
