KINSTON -- Jerry Vaerastegui supplied a game-clinching, two-RBI double and Myrtle Beach snapped Kinston's season-eight game win streak with a 10-9 victory Thursday evening at historic Grainger Stadium.
Isaiah Ka'aihue ripped a game-tying, three-run homer -- his 11th of the season -- a five-run, ninth-inning uprising. The Pelicans's Matt Young and Robert Alvarez pounded out consecutive singles before Vaerastegui delivered the big blow.
Myrtle Beach's bullpen struggled in the K-Tribe ninth and issued four walks. Chris Gimenez pulled Kinston within 10-9 with a sacrifice fly, but Chris De La Cruz connected on a game-ending, bases-loaded groundout.
De La Cruz went 3-for-6 with two runs and an RBI. John Drennen had two hits for the K-Tribe who banged out a total of 10 hits on the night. Max Ramirez belted his seventh home run of the year in the fourth inning.
Matt Meyer (1-1) endured the pitching loss behind middle reliever Eric Stiller, who fanned five Pelican batters in two innings. Stiller replaced starter Kevin Dixon, who surrendered four earned runs in six innings.
Myrtle Beach hurler Nelson Payano claimed the mound win, while Kevin Gunderson notched his sixth save of the season.
The teams continue their four-game series tonight. First pitch is slated for 7 o'clock.
