WILMINGTON, Del. -- Jerad Head scored the game-winning run on an error and Kinston nipped Wilmington 9-8 on Monday evening.
Trailing 8-7, Chris De La Cruz and Michael Aubrey ignited the K-Tribe ninth with back-to-back singles. Stephen Head hit a two-out, full-count pitch to right field. De La Cruz scooted home for the tying run. Blue Rocks right fielder Brian McFall misplayed the ball and Head, running for Aubrey, touched the plate on the error.
Matt Meyer emerged the winning pitcher in relief, while Scott Roehl threw a perfect ninth for his eighth save of the season. Kinston picked up just its second win of the season when trailing after eight innings.
Aubrey finished the night 3-for-4.
Wilmington claimed a 2-0 lead in the third, but Kinston answered with Jared Goedert's two-RBI single and Nathan Panther's two-RBI home run. The Blue Rocks regained the lead at 6-4, but the K-Tribe -- again -- responded. Josh Rodriguez connected on a two-RBI double, which plated Goedert and Panther.
Kinston's advantage disappeared when Wilmington's Kila Kaaihue drilled a seventh-inning, solo home run. Jose Duarte added a two-out, RBI single in the eighth to push the Blue Rocks back in front 8-7.
The teams will play a doubleheader beginning at 5:35 p.m. today. Frank Herrmann will start for the K-Tribe in game one.
