Tommy "Two Gloves" Gainey of the Golf Channel's Big Break is registered to play in a three-day, Tarheel Tour event which began this morning at Walnut Creek Country Club.
More than 100 professionals are vying for a purse of $15,000 on the challenging and picturesque course. Included among the favorites are Goldsboro's Andy Crain, who co-owns the course record at Lane Tree Golf Course and William McGirt, the Tarheel Tour's leading money winner this season.
Also scheduled to compete are former East Carolina standouts Jonathan Hill and Frank Adams; Jay Haas Jr.; former PGA Tour member Matt Davidson and South Carolina Open Champion Jordan Pomeranz.
The Tarheel Tour has conducted three- and four-day tournaments in North and South Carolina since 2002. More than 500 golfers from across the globe participate in the tour, which paid out more than $1.8 million in total prize money last season.
Located in Charlotte, the Tour has helped groom players for the U.S. Open. Nearly 80 golfers have qualified for the prestigious PGA Tour School, including 30 into the final stage. Among the mix is Kyle Reifers, who won the Chattanooga Classic in his Nationwide Tour debut.
Titleist, TaylorMade, Nike Golf and Sundog Eyewear are the Tour sponsors.
