MOUNT OLIVE -- Kate Somek, a four-year member of the Mount Olive College women's golf team, was selected as the recipient of the Thomas R. Morris Award for Academic Excellence during commencement ceremonies Saturday at Mount Olive College.
Somek graduated summa cum laude with a 3.93 cumulative grade-point average.
The Thomas R. Morris Award for Academic Excellence is given to the graduate who best exemplifies serious academic pursuit and love and breadth of learning. Somek's selection not only marks the second year in a row a Trojan student-athlete has won the award, but also the second straight year the winner was a member of the women's golf team.
Lindsey Snyder was the recipient of the award at last year's graduation.
Somek, a senior from Sudbury, Ontario, graduated with a double major in business management and human resource management, as well as a minor in psychology. She is a two-time Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference All-Academic selection and was named to the 2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District second team.
Somek was a finalist for the 2006-07 CVAC Murphy Osborne Award, which recognizes excellence in athletics, academics and community service. She is a nominee for Academic All-District honors again this year and is also among the nominees to represent the CVAC in the 2007 NCAA Woman of the Year Awards program.
On the golf course, Somek earned all-CVAC honorable mention in 2006 and was named to the all-tournament team at the 2005 CVAC Tournament. Somek's 77 in the final round of the 2005 CVAC Tournament is tied for the second-lowest single-round score in Mount Olive women's golf history. Her round included 134-foot eagle.
This season, Somek finished first at the inaugural MOC Invitational. At this year's MOC athletics awards banquet, she was named 2006-07 Female Scholar Athlete of the Year.
