WASHINGTON -- Led by a pair of talented freshmen, second-seeded Charles B. Aycock shocked top-seeded Washington 5-1 in their opening-round, N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 3-A dual-team playoff match Thursday afternoon.

As they have so often this season, freshmen Blake Vail and Addison Westbrook dominated their opponents for the Golden Falcons. Vail, the top seed, defeated Ben Peele 6-2, 6-0. The second-seeded Westbrook won over Nathan Wersley 6-0, 6-1.

Blake Cooper, Dylan Quinn and Kyle Clark rounded out the winners for Aycock. Clark, who was subbing for an ailing Ben Nichols, played in his first singles match of the year and put on a strong performance in defeating Washington's Archie Griffin in a tie-breaker 6-4, 4-6 (10-3).

C.B. Aycock (14-8) entertains wild-card entry Oxford Webb next Tuesday afternoon.

Softball

Eagles fall in title game

ERWIN -- In their second meeting of the season, No. 1-ranked Cape Fear Christian jumped out to an early lead and upended Wayne Christian 6-0 in the Carolina Christian 1-A Conference tournament final Thursday afternoon.

Cape Fear grabbed a 2-0 advantage on two hits, a walk and a misjudged fly ball in the opening inning.

Wayne Christian settled down and turned the contest into a pitcher's duel until the sixth. Cape Fear plated four runs on three hits and two costly errors by the Eagles.

The Eagles (14-5 overall) had just three hits -- two from Cynthia Burroughs and one from Michelle Krug. Both players earned a spot on the all-CCC tournament team.

Traci Davis, who threw a complete game and struck out seven, received the most outstanding player award for the tournament.

Cape Fear seized the automatic bid to the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association playoffs. Wayne Christian is expected to receive an at-large bid. The pairings will be released Saturday.

Panthers claim No. 1 seed

PRINCETON -- North Johnston scored twice in the bottom of the sixth inning and edged Princeton 6-5 in a contest to determine the Carolina Conference's No. 1 seed for next week's Class 1-A playoffs.

The Dawgs (13-7 overall) put together a two-out, four-run rally in the sixth and led 5-4. Kayla Whitley answered with the game-winning hit in the Panthers' half of the inning.

Sarah Wood picked up the win for North Johnston while Amber Wood took the loss for Princeton.

Haylee Wood finished 2-for-4 for the Bulldogs while Ashley Braswell added two hits including a double.

Princeton, which has lost three of its last four games, will entertain Holly Ridge Dixon in the N.C. High School Athletic Association playoffs next Tuesday. Game time is 7 p.m.

Walnut Creek Ladies Golf

Novella Zambelli claimed first low gross, Faye Franklin took first low net and Mary Ann Sutton seized low putts in the two-day East Carolina Ladies Golf Association match.

Charlotte Campbell won first low gross in second flight, while Linda Cannon grabbed second low gross.

Walnut Creek won first place in the battle for the silver cup.

Lane Tree Ladies Golf

Betty Jean Gurley emerged the game-of-the-week winner during weekly tournament play at Lane Tree Golf Course. She also won low net and low putts.

JV baseball

SNOW HILL -- Greene Central finished its season in style by outslugging Eastern Wayne 13-12 on Wednesday afternoon.

Brandon Piner and Jeffrey Howard had big days at the plate going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs respectively. Ben Carraway also had two hits, going 2-for-2.

Eastern Wayne was led by Cambrick Moye who finished 3-for-5 with a triple and Josh Frederick who was a perfect 3-for-3 with the stick.

On the mound, John Nethercut picked up the win while Moye took the loss.

The Rams finished the year 10-12 overall.

Middle schools

Norwayne baseball 15, Brogden 0 -- John Taylor and Derek Limbaugh combined to pitch a one-hitter to lead Norwayne over Brogden on Thursday. Christian Pate, Travis Muscleman and Taylor all had two hits apiece. Norwayne improves to 15-0 (7-0) and plays its last game on May 14 at Eastern Wayne.

Eastern Wayne baseball 5, Rosewood 4 -- Jonathan Carter slugged a two-RBI home run in the third inning, and finished the day with a double and three RBI. Lamar Best tripled in a 2-for-3 outing, while Tyler Brown contributed one hit and two RBI. Logan Wicks allowed three hits, struck out eight and walked six in a six-inning stint. Eastern Wayne (11-2 overall) entertains Greenwood this afternoon.

Grantham softball 12, Mount Olive 3 -- Madison Davis struck out 10 in seven innings to help Grantham to the win over Mount Olive on Thursday. Davis also had a strong game with the bat going 2-for-3 with a triple while Andrel Morris added two hits. Grantham moves to 11-3 (4-1) and next plays on May 14 when it hosts Spring Creek.

Eastern Wayne soccer 5, Norwayne 0 -- Pamela Diaz's two goals helped lead Eastern Wayne to the shutout of Norwayne on Wednesday. Grace Russo and Caroline Roth added a single goal while Lauren Breindel had a goal and two assists for the Warriors. Miller Delbridge contributed two assists for Eastern Wayne. The Warriors (6-0) finished their season undefeated while Norwayne (2-3) will next play on May 15 at Grantham.

Dixie Youth Majors

Wayne County Falcons 6, St. Mary's 1 -- The Wayne County Falcons improved to 7-0 with a victory over St. Mary's on Thursday evening. The Falcons were led by Tyler Rowe, Brett Bartlett, Dylan Mitchell and K.J. Reavers with two hits each while Hunter Dean added one. Bartlett recorded eight strikeouts in three innings on the mound. Thomas Kierski, Brian Kerlin, and Lukas Odamiel had one hit apiece for St. Mary's.

Dixie Youth Minors

Wayne County Falcons 16, Seymour Johnson Yankees 1 -- Nick Leggett tossed a no-hitter in Wayne County's victory over the Seymour Johnson Yankees Thursday evening. J.C. Toler, Zach Howard, Austin Tyner, Jordan Salter, and Jeffrey Mooring collected 2 hits apiece, while Leggett, Alex Weaver, and Chris Barbour added one hit each. The Falcons improved to 7-0 on the season.

Wayne County Falcons 5, Wayne Christian 4 -- Tyler Powell had 11 strikeouts in five innings to lead Wayne County Falcons to a victory over Wayne Christian on Tuesday. Nick Leggett led Falcon hitters with a game-winning double while Jordan Salter, Chase Horton, Jeffrey Mooring and Tyler Powell added hits. Tanner Rose, J.T. Nauceder, Jakob Riffle, Hunter Burt and Ben Burdett recorded hits for Wayne Christian. The Falcons improved to 6-0 while Wayne Christian falls to 3-3 on the season.
