CALYPSO -- Having already been the victim of late-inning rallies this season, Rosewood instead turned the trick on its opponent as the Eagles erased a 3-2 deficit with a nine-run seventh inning to win 11-3 over North Duplin on Tuesday night.

Taylor Allen turned in another quality start by allowing three runs on seven hits, walked two and struck out 10 to pick up the win.

Garrett Howell drove in three runs for Rosewood by going 2-for-3 at the plate while Goss Kendall finished 1-for-2 and scored three runs. David Smeltzer was 1-for-2 with an RBI.

Billy Mello finished 2-for-3 and Blake King was 1-for-3 with two RBIs for North Duplin.

The loss drops the Rebels to 8-9 overall (2-7 Carolina Conference) and they will next travel to play Spring Creek on Friday night.

Rosewood improves to 16-4 (7-2 CC) and next hosts arch-rival Princeton on Friday.

Speedy's triple lifts Rams

SNOW HILL -- Michael Speedy's walk-off triple in the seventh inning propelled Greene Central to a 5-4 victory over Tarboro in Eastern Plains Conference play.

Speedy came up with two on in the bottom of the seventh and drilled a pitch down the right field line to drive in Stephen McDonald and Trey Beaman. Speedy finished 2-for-4 on the night.

Josh Elmore pitched the first 6 1/3 innings and allowed four runs on six hits, walked four and struck out 10.

Robert Tyndall relieved Elmore with one out in the seventh and allowed only one hit and struck out one to pick up the win.

Tyler Chase added a solo home run from the Rams.

Greene Central improves to 9-13 overall (5-3 EPC) and next travels to Farmville Central on Friday night.

Gators bats go silent

KENLY -- Spring Creek couldn't make contact against North Johnston as the Gators struck out 16 times and fell 5-0 in Carolina 1-A Conference action on Tuesday.

The Gators managed only four hits against Panthers' pitching. Timmy Rogers, Anthony Brogden, Adam Hinson and Paul Hayes contributed the hits.

Kevin Prunest suffered the loss on the mound.

Spring Creek drops to 10-13 (1-8 CC) and next hosts North Duplin on Friday.

N. Lenoir wallops North Pitt

LaGRANGE -- North Lenoir pounded North Pitt 12-2 on Tuesday in Easter Plains Conference action.

Brandon Sutton had the big game with the bat going 4-for-5 while Andrew Manning finished 3-for-4. Tyler Smith and Carter Capps both added two hits apiece.

Sutton picked up the win on the mound by allowing two runs on two hits while striking out seven in six innings.

North Lenoir improves to 19-3 overall (8-0 EPC) and next plays at Goldsboro on Friday.

WCDS suffers road defeat

Wayne Country Day suffered a surprising 17-7 defeat at the hands of Greenville Christian on Tuesday.

Trent Langston took the loss by allowing seven runs on seven hits, walked four and struck out one.

Travis Davis led the Chargers with the bat, going 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Kevin Herring and Langston both contributed two hits apiece.

The loss drops WCDS to 16-4 overall and they will next play for the conference regular season title on Thursday when they travel to Faith Christian of Rocky Mount.

Goldsboro falls to Jaguars

Goldsboro's Eric McLean finished 3-for-3 at the plate, but the Cougars still remained winless as they fell 24-3 to Farmville Central on Tuesday in Eastern Plains Conference play.

McLean also pitched and took the loss on the mound.

Goldsboro falls to 0-19 overall (3-3 EPC) and will next entertain North Lenoir on Friday.

Softball

Dawgs clinch share of title

PRINCETON -- Becca Harlan scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning and Princeton earned a share of the Carolina 1-A Conference regular-season title with a 1-0 victory over Ayden-Grifton.

Harlan reached on a two-base throwing error and advanced to third on April King's single to shallow left field. Harlan crossed the plate with the game-winning run when Jessica Smith grounded out to first base.

The Dawgs earned their first league title since 1994.

King scattered two hits and fanned 12 Charger batters in a complete-game effort on the mound.

Hannah Wood and Tylan George paced Princeton's offense with two hits apiece. King and Smith each contributed one hit.

The Dawgs (13-5 overall) improved to 8-1 in league play and can seize the title outright with a win Friday at archrival Rosewood. A loss forces a tie with North Johnston for first place.

G. Central destroys Tarboro

TARBORO -- Greene Central hit everything in sight as it pounded out 19 hits in a 21-0 blanking of Tarboro on Tuesday evening in Eastern Plains Conference action.

Stacy Wade was a perfect 4-for-4 with a home run at the plate while Blair Carraway added three hits and Amanda Sugg finished with two hits.

Greene Central improves its mark to 9-10 (3-3 EPC) and next hosts Farmville Central on Thursday.

Panthers shut out Hawks

BETHEL -- North Pitt could only push one run across against North Lenoir pitcher Brittany Sanders as they defeated the Hawks 1-0 on Tuesday evening in Eastern Plains 2-A Conference play.

Sanders struck out six while allowing one run on six hits to take the loss.

Nichole Howard added a hit for North Lenoir.

The Hawks falls to 14-7 overall and 4-2 in the EPC and will next travel to play Greene Central on May 7.

Panthers keep Gators winless

KENLY -- North Johnston scored nine runs in the first two innings and coasted to a 10-0 five-inning win over Spring Creek on Tuesday night in Carolina Conference action.

Paula Webber, Renee Duvall and Ivy Campbell all had a hit for the Gators.

Spring Creek drops to 0-17 overall (0-9 CC) and next hosts North Duplin on Friday.

Soccer

Greenfield upends WCDS

WILSON -- Hannah Aycock notched the game-winning goal in the second overtime and Greenfield edged Wayne Country Day 3-2 in a Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference match.

Aycock posted a natural hat trick (three consecutive goals) for the Knights, who improved to 7-3-1 overall and 3-2 in CPIC action.

Mack Thompson provided both goals for the Chargers.

Wayne Country Day (10-5 overall, 4-2 CPIC) entertains Ahoskie Ridgecroft on Thursday.

C.B. Aycock dominates Saints

Charles B. Aycock recorded a convincing 6-0 defeat of Southern Wayne in the first round of the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference tournament on Tuesday night.

The Golden Falcons broke open a 1-0 game at halftime by putting five goals in the back of the net during the second half.

Carolina Schlaeppi booted in two goals while Lizzie Sodoma, Amanda Schlaeppi, Erin Medford and Lauren Adcox all had a single goal. Samantha Whitworth, Sodoma and Meford assists on three of the Aycock goals.

C.B. Aycock improves to 10-9-1 overall and next faces second-seeded Eastern Wayne today in the second round of the ECC tournament.

Tennis

WCDS comes up short

Faith Christian of Rocky Mount remained undefeated in conference play as they used two wins in doubles play to break a 3-3 deadlock and defeat Wayne Country Day 5-4 on Tuesday afternoon.

Russell Turner, David Wilson and Kevin Martel gave WCDS a 3-1 lead in singles play before Faith Christian rallied two win the next two matches.

The tandem of Turner/Martel provided the only victory for the Chargers in doubles play.

WCDS plays its final regular season match on Thursday when they host CPIC foe Kerr-Vance academy on the Wayne Community College courts.

Golf

Brindley second in Flight A

Kevin Brindley carded a 73 and finished second in Flight A competition during weekly Amateur Golf Tour play at Lane Tree Golf Course.

Kevin Harrington, who also hails from Goldsboro, took ninth in the same flight. Carl Evans was 14th overall in Flight B and Cory Watson captured seventh place in Flight C.

The next AGT event is scheduled for May 12 at Roanoke Country Club in Williamston.

Walnut Creek Ladies Golf

Mary Morris emerged the play-of-the-day winner during weekly play on the Walnut Creek Country Club links.

Linda Watson claimed low gross, while Faye Franklin seized low net. Gaye Bryant won low putts.

JV baseball

Late home run sparks GC

TARBORO -- Josh Taylor's seventh-inning home run gave Greene Central a 5-4 victory over Tarboro on Tuesday evening.

Taylor finished the game 3-for-4 while Brandon Potter and Chris Manning both added two hits.

Jasper Jones was victorious on the mound for the Rams.

Greene Central improves to 8-11 (2-4) and next host Farmville Central on Thursday.

C.B. Aycock routs N. Lenoir

PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock closed out its season in impressive fashion by putting 16 runs on the scoreboard in a 16-3, five-inning win over North Lenoir on Tuesday.

The Golden Falcons used a 15-hit attack to take down the Hawks.

Tyler Ruffin was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with a homer while Jesse Randolph finished 3-for-3 for the Golden Falcons.

Matt Radford contributed two hits and four RBIs while Josh Martin and Greg Champion both had two hits apiece for Aycock.

The Golden Falcons finish the season 11-9 (5-4).

Middle schools

Grantham softball 11, Eastern Wayne 1 -- Madison Davis threw a one-hitter while striking out 12 to help Grantham to the win. Taylor Hood finished 3-for-3 with the bat with four RBIs for Grantham. The Bulldogs improve to 9-2 (3-1) and next host Norwayne on Thursday.

Dixie Youth Majors

Wayne County Falcons 15, Rosewood Rockets 0 -- The Falcons' Tyler Powell tossed a no-hitter with seven strikeouts and added two home runs in the effort. Chase Horton and Jeffrey Mooring collected two hits each while J.C. Toler, Austin Tyner, Jordan Salter, Zach Howard, Nick Leggett and Bobby Holland contributed one hit apiece. The Rockets fell to 4-1 with the loss, while Wayne County improved to 5-0.
