Prep roundup: EW secures No. 2 seed

Junior outfielder Nolan Lancaster slugged a sixth-inning home run and catapulted Eastern Wayne to a 4-2 victory over Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference foe Kinston on Friday evening.

Lancaster's two-run blast, his second of the season, gave the Warriors the No. 2 seed for next week's conference tournament. Eastern Wayne (12-12 overall, 7-3 ECC) faces either Kinston or Wilson Hunt in semifinal-round play Thursday at 7 p.m.

"It was a good ball game and both teams played," said Warriors head coach Jabo Fulghum. "Somebody different came through last night for us. You can't rely on the same one to get it done every day.

"I feel like we've got some kids in the lineup, especially one through six, who have some pop."

Jackson Frederick (2-for-3) delivered an RBI single in the second inning. The Warriors benefited from a game-tying wild pitch in the fourth inning, which set the stage for Lancaster's clutch hit.

Right-hander John Wooten collected the mound win with three innings of two-hit, three-strikeout relief. Anthony O'tellio started and yielded two hits to go along with four strikeouts in four innings of work.

"Hopefully this will carry over to the playoffs," said Fulghum.

Greene Central

beats Goldsboro

SNOW HILL -- Trey Beaman cranked out two doubles and drove in three runs during Greene Central's 15-0 conquest of Eastern Plains 2-A Conference foe Goldsboro.

Beaman concluded the day 3-for-3 for the Rams, who improved to 8-13 overall and 4-3 in the EPC. Tyler Chase supplied two doubles and two RBI.

Michael Speedy emerged the winning pitcher.

Greene Central entertains Tarboro on Tuesday.

TARBORO -- John Alphin tossed a two-hitter and two-time defending Eastern Plains 2-A champion North Lenoir pounded Tarboro 12-0 on the Municipal Stadium diamond Friday evening.

Alphin posted four strikeouts and walked one during a five-inning stint. Dewitt Pope tossed one inning of perfect relief. The contest was called after six innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.

Bryce Grady, Andrew Manning, George Walters, C.C. Croom and Carter Capps delivered two hits apiece for the Hawks. Capps emerged the RBI leader with four. Manning plated three runs and Grady drove in two runs.

North Lenoir (18-2 overall, 7-0 EPC) entertains Charles B. Aycock at 6 p.m. Monday.

Softball

EW's Fricks throws

complete game

Lani Fricks threw a complete game and Eastern Wayne aggressively ran the bases during an 8-3 triumph over fellow Eastern Carolina 3-A member Kinston.

Fricks yielded six hits and struck out two Vikings as the Warriors (2-15 overall, 2-8 ECC) clinched the fifth seed for next week's conference tournament. Eastern Wayne is the guest of fourth-seeded Wilson Hunt, which has lost nine of its last 10 games, on Wednesday.

Caitlin Turner, Carrie Adams, Lindsey Frederick, Meghan Pittman and Casey Mitchell contributed one hit apiece. Turner and Pittman each supplied an RBI.

Warriors head coach Scott Waller said the team did a good job of capitalizing on passed balls and wild pitches. The Eastern Wayne defense played a flaweless game behind Fricks.

Kinston (1-15, 1-9 ECC) drew the No. 6 seed and visits third-seeded Wilson Beddingfield in opening-round tournament action.

Hawks' Jordan

hurls perfect game

LaGRANGE -- Right-hander Connor Jordan threw a perfect game as North Lenoir blitzed winless Tarboro High 15-0 on the Eastern Plains 2-A Conference scene Friday evening.

Jordan recorded seven strikeouts as the Hawks clinched a berth in the N.C. High School Athletic Association playoffs.

Lauren Hudson tripled and drove in three runs. Brittany Sanders batted 2-for-3 with an RBI. Nichole Howard added two hits and an RBI, while Kayla Sutton contributed one hit.

North Lenoir (14-5 overall, 4-1 EPC) is the guest of C.B. Aycock on Monday. Game time is 5 p.m.

Rosewood bowls

over Spring Creek

Jennifer Hall pounded out three hits and Rosewood upended county rival Spring Creek 15-0 in Carolina 1-A Conference action Friday afternoon.

Courtney Hill and Missy Bailey added two hits each for the Eagles, who evened their Carolina worksheet at 4-4. Caitlin Armor, Megan Church and Christina Bruton contributed one hit apiece.

Haile Meadows earned the mound win.

Rosewood (8-11 overall) entertains Wayne Christian on Monday.

dumps RM Academy

David Wilson and George Mayo each dropped just one game, and Wayne Country Day turned in a dominating 8-1, non-conference decision over Rocky Mount Academy on Friday afternoon.

Wilson, the Chargers' No. 2 seed, dumped the Eagles' Shaunuk Varma 6-1, 6-0. Mayo, seeded fifth, dispatched Greg Park 6-0, 6-1. Teammates Russell Turner, Byron Bryan, Kevin Martel and Luxman Srikantha also provided straight-set singles wins.

Turner-Martel and Mayo-Srikantha collected WCDS' doubles points.

Wayne Country Day (9-1 overall) plays host to Faith Christian-Rocky Mount on Tuesday. Match play begins at 3:30 p.m. on the Wayne Community College courts.

Golf

Ham, Vinson

among leaders

WILSON -- Eastern Wayne's Kyle Ham and Charles B. Aycock's Will Vinson each recorded a top-10 finish during the inaugural Coach Eddie Summerlin High School Invitational golf tournament contested Friday afternoon.

Ham carded a 4-over par 75 on the par-71 Willow Springs Country Club layout, while Vinson fashioned a 76. Vinson's low round helped Charles B. Aycock achieve a four-player total of 321, good enough for a fifth-place tie with SouthWest Edgecombe in the team portion of the event.

Jordan Elmore complemented Vinson with a 78. Charles Cranford and Austin Forrest provided scores of 82 and 85, respectively.

Eastern Wayne took 10th place with at 328. Nick Barrow fired an 80, followed by Carter Walchli (86) and Scott Boyette (87).

The tournament is named for Eddie Summerlin, who coached girls' basketball teams at Elm City and Wilson Fike before recently passing away after a long battle with cancer.

C.B. Aycock and Eastern Wayne return to action Monday for an Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference meet at Goldsboro Municipal Golf Course. Tee time is 2 p.m.

Aycock's Medford

notches hat trick

PIKEVILLE -- Senior Erin Medford notched her first hat trick (three goals) as C.B. Aycock blanked Southern Wayne 6-0 in the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference regular-season finale for both teams Friday afternoon.

The teams face each other again Tuesday in the ECC tournament quarterfinals at Eastern Wayne. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Little Big Horn.

Medford tallied first-half goals off assists from Kiara Rawls and fellow senior Lizzie Sodoma. Alicia Sodoma completed Aycock's first-half scoring off Caroline Schlaeppi's assist.

Lizzie Sodoma, Amanda Schlaeppi and Medford collected unassisted goals in the second half. Medford, Sodoma, Schlaeppi, Rawls, Samantha Whitworth and Nida Waheed played their final regular-season home game for the Golden Falcons.

Keepers Courtney Sheeks and Patrice Pittman combined for the shutout in goal.

C.B. Aycock (9-9-1 overall) finished 6-4 against ECC opposition. Southern Wayne concluded the year 0-11.

Elizabeth Borden provided two goals and Eastern Wayne polished off a perfect Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference slate with a 4-0 victory over Kinston at Little Big Horn.

Warner Underwood and Brandi Dean supplied one goal apiece for the Warriors, who fashioned a 4-0 record against ECC opposition.

Keeper Emily Crawford notched five saves and earned the shutout in goal.

Eastern Wayne concluded the season 8-3 overall.

WCDS concludes

season with win

Wayne Country Day triumphed in five of six singles matches and eased past county rival Southern Wayne 7-2 on the Wayne Community College courts.

The Chargers received pro-set (eight-game) singles victories from Tanner Pate, Brandon Davis, Jay Grisette, Brinson Mitchell and Trent Proimos. The duos of Pate-Davis and Grisette-Blake Marchese each collected a doubles point.

Second-seeded Benny Segura earned the Saints' lone singles point. Southern Wayne prevailed at No. 3 doubles.

Wayne Country Day concluded the year 6-2 overall.
