Vinson cards 2-under 70; Aycock flirts with school-record score

Will Vinson posted a 2-under par 70 and led Charles B. Aycock to a 298-330, non-conference victory over North Lenoir at Lane Tree Golf Course.

The Golden Falcons came within four strokes of tying the school record.

Austin Forrest complemented Vinson with an 18-hole round of 1-over par 73. Jordan Elmore and Charles Cranford supplied scorecards of 76 and 79. It was the first time that Aycock had four 70-stroke outings in the same match in more than a year.

"We are really playing well and are focused on the end of the season run," said Golden Falcons head coach Jay Westbrook. "The guys are playing some of their best golf of the year.

"I am really proud of them because all of their hard work is starting to pay off."

Thomas Faulkner paced the Hawks with a 3-over par 75. Will Norville added a 79. Logan O'Neal and Dustin Downey provided rounds of 79 and 84, respectively.

C.B. Aycock concludes regular-season play Monday in a Class 3-A Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference meet at Goldsboro Municipal Golf Course. Tee time is 2 p.m.

GREENVILLE -- Collier Finch posted a medal-leading 65 and J.H. Rose cruised past Greene Central 295-317 on the Greenville Country Club links Thursday afternoon.

Josh Elmore led the Rams with a 76. Colby Murphy fired a 77, followed by Josh Morris (79) and Blake Sutton (85).

Greene Central (32-7 overall) concludes regular-season play Monday in a Eastern Plains 2-A Conference meet at Cotton Valley Country Club in Tarboro.

WCDS earns share

of CPIC 1-A title

HENDERSON -- Trent Langston's eighth-inning home run capped a phenomenal comeback as Wayne Country Day outlasted Kerr-Vance 13-7 on Thursday evening.

The Chargers (16-3 overall) climbed to 4-1 against league opposition and clinched a share of the CPIC regular-season title -- the school's first since 1987.

"That was a great win for us, especially having to fight back from a 7-1 (deficit) after the first two innings," said WCDS head coach Michael Taylor. "We didn't make an error. You have to play defense to win the big ball games and we got it done last night."

But it looked as if state-ranked WCDS would drop its third straight outing. The Spartans tagged Langston for six runs on eight hits -- all with two outs -- during the first inning.

Langston exited and reliever Travis Davis closed the door with seven-plus superb innings. He scattered five hits and fanned 10 Spartan batters.

Although Langston struggled on the mound, he excelled at the plate. His two-run double in the seventh forced the extra inning.

In the Charger eighth, Sam Steed delivered a game-winning RBI groundout with the bases loaded. Ryan Ford (2-for-5, 3 RBI) pounded out a two-RBI single and Davis followed with an RBI double.

Langston (3-for-5, 4 RBI) capped the scoring with his two-run homer and finished a base hit shy of hitting for the cycle. Davis finished with three hits and two RBI. Jack Scott batted 2-for-4, while Cameron Ford supplied three hits.

WCDS, ranked No. 1 in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A poll, visits Greenville Christian on Tuesday.

North Duplin

drops road game

LITTLEFIELD -- Ayden-Grifton's pitching staff held North Duplin scoreless for four innings and the Chargers rolled to a 14-1 decision in Carolina 1-A Conference play.

Doug Lloyd and Will Lewis supplied two hits apiece for the Rebels. Trey Beavers spoiled the Chargers' shutout bid with an RBI double in the seventh.

Lloyd suffered the pitching loss.

North Duplin (8-8 overall) fell to 2-6 in conference play and travels to Rosewood on Tuesday.

Eagles second,

Dawgs take third

Rosewood's Clarence Toran and Josh Holmes emerged individual winners and helped the Eagles finish second overall in the season-ending Carolina 1-A Conference track and field championship meet.

Toran claimed the long jump title with a leap of 20 feet, 9 inches. Myers, who quarterbacked the football team, displayed his speed with a winning time of 22.74 seconds in the 200-meter run.

The duo helped Rosewood amass 133 points in the six-team meet, won by Ayden-Grifton. Courtney Fuller prevailed in four individual events and the Chargers accumulated a whopping 198 points.

Princeton ended up third with 93 points, followed by North Duplin (58), North Johnston (46) and Spring Creek (12).

Gerrell Bogle paced the Dawgs with victories in the triple jump and 100-meter dash.

C.B. Aycock's Vail

enters record books

PIKEVILLE -- Blake Vail became the first male tennis player in C.B. Aycock history to complete regular-season play unbeaten after defeating Southern Wayne's Jonathan Hartley 6-0, 6-0 on Thursday afternoon.

Vail improved to 21-0 overall in the Golden Falcons' 8-1 conquest of their Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference rivals.

Addison Westbrook, Ben Evans, Blake Cooper, Ben Nichols and Dylan Quinn each picked up a straight-set singles win. Cooper needed a second-set tiebreaker to edge the Saints' James Poandl 6-1, 7-6 (5) at the No. 4 spot.

Vail-Westbrook and Evans-Cooper prevailed in doubles.

The No. 3 doubles of Chris King-Gram Price collected Southern Wayne's lone point in the regular-season finale for both teams.

The Golden Falcons (13-8 overall, 8-2 ECC) and Saints return to action next Wednesday in the ECC tournament at Greene Central. First-round matches begin at 1 p.m.

Warriors earn

ECC 3-A forfeit

Short-handed Kinston opted not to play its regular-season finale against Eastern Wayne and forfeited the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference match.

The Warriors (15-3 overall) finished 10-0 against ECC opposition and ran their league unbeaten streak to 19 matches overall. They return to action in the season-ending individual tournament next Wednesday at Greene Central.

W. Country Day

WILSON -- Wayne Country Day rallied from a 2-1 deficit after doubles play and edged Greenfield School 5-4 on the Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference scene Thursday afternoon.

The tandem of Kevin Martel-Russell Turner seized the Chargers' lone doubles points. Martel, Turner, Byron Bryan and Luxman Srikantha assured the WCDS victory with victories in singles play.

Wayne Country Day (8-1 overall, 3-1 CPIC) entertains Rocky Mount Academy in non-conference today. Match time is 4 p.m. on the Wayne Community College courts.

off Tarboro High

TARBORO -- Chelsea Brown tallied the game's lone goal and Rosewood's defense posted a 1-0 shutout over Carolina/Eastern Plains 1-A/2-A Conference rival Tarboro High.

Gabrielle Cornman assisted Brown's first-half mark.

Rosewood (9-4 overall, 5-2 C/EPC) travels to Princeton on Monday.

North Lenoir

LaGRANGE -- Jordan Hudson continued her season-long scoring tear with two goals in North Lenoir's 4-1 conquest of county rival Kinston on Thursday evening.

Sasha Holeman and Brittany Hill collected one goal apiece for the Hawks.

North Lenoir (11-7 overall) visits Spring Creek on Monday.

Carr, Lane

pace Rebel offense

LITTLEFIELD -- Senior first baseman Brittney Carr pounded out three hits and drove in three runs during North Duplin's 7-4 victory over Carolina 1-A Conference rival Ayden-Grifton.

Carr scored twice and stole one base for the Rebels.

Elizabeth Lane doubled and plated three runs in a 3-for-5 effort. Brittney Coley and Jenny Coley combined for four hits. Kristin Jones and Casey Pate singled, while winning pitcher Jessica Pridgen doubled in three at-bats.

Pridgen struck out 13 Charger batters and allowed four runs on eight hits.

North Duplin (6-10 overall) improved to 2-6 in league play and visits Rosewood on Tuesday.

North Johnston

tops Rosewood

Courtney Hill slugged a home run and finished with two hits in Rosewood's 10-6 loss against Carolina 1-A Conference foe North Johnston.

Aubrey Reinhard and Haile Meadows banged out two hits apiece for the Eagles.

Rosewood (7-11 overall) dipped to 3-4 in Carolina Conference play and entertains Spring Creek today. North Johnston (10-9, 5-2 CC) plays host to league-leading Princeton.

PIKEVILLE -- Clayton rallied for six runs in the top half of the seventh inning and edged C.B. Aycock 8-4 on Wednesday afternoon.

Golden Falcon hurler Jordan Quinn received a no-decision in five-plus innings on the mound. Eric Dubose suffered the loss in relief.

Tyler Ruffin, Josh Martin and Dylan Barfield cranked out two hits apiece for C.B. Aycock.

The Golden Falcons (10-8 overall) visit county rival Southern Wayne today.

Middle schools

Princeton softball 5, Benson 1 -- Megan Gerrell pounded out three hits and winning pitcher Traci Bridgers recorded 14 strikeouts. Nicole Melvin contributed two hits for the Dawgs. Bridgers and Ashleigh Mayes provided one hit apiece.

Dixie Youth Majors

Wayne County Falcons 18, Wayne County Boys Club 1 -- Austin Tyner and Alex Weaver each belted a home run for the Falcons. J.C. Toler doubled. Chase Horton, Nick Leggett and Jordan Salter each contributed hits. Leggett, Horton and Toler combined for a no-hitter and nine strikeouts. The Falcons improved to 4-0.

Dixie Youth Minors

Wayne County Falcons 2, Wayne Country Day 1 -- Falcon pitchers Brett Bartlett and Tyler Rowe combined for a five-hitter and 10 strikeouts. K.J. Reavers, Hunter Dean, Sean Ruffin, Bartlett and Rowe emerged the offensive leaders. Cody Neal notched seven strikeouts in a three-inning stint and tripled at the plate for WCD. Teammates Blake Mayo, Dave Uzzell, Cody Jackson and Julian Mitchell contributed on offense. The Falcons climbed to 4-0, while WCD fell to 1-2.
