DUDLEY -- Sterling Grice's two-out RBI single lifted Southern Wayne to a 7-6 win over Wilmington Hoggard in eight innings on Senior Night on Wednesday.

The Saints took a 4-0 lead following the first inning, only to see the lead erased with six Hoggard runs in the next two innings.

With the score tied at 6-6 in the seventh inning, Southern Wayne got out of a bases loaded jam with a 4-6-3 double play induced by reliever Michael Douglas to keep the game deadlocked.

In the eight inning, Byron Powell drew a two-out walk and advance to second on a passed ball. Jordan Williams then entered as a pinch-runner and came home on Grice's hit into the left-center field gap.

Grice finished the night 2-for-4 with three RBIs while Chris Massey had two hits, two runs scored and two RBIs. Powell also had two hits and an RBI.

Douglas recorded the victory by not allowing a run and only one hit in 1 2/3 innings.

Southern Wayne (11-11) returns to Eastern Carolina Conference play on Friday night when they travel to archrival Charles B. Aycock.

Warriors rebound with

win over New Hanover

WILMINGTON -- Eastern Wayne rebounded from Tuesday's disappointing loss to Charles B. Aycock by pounding host Wilmington New Hanover 10-3 on Wednesday night.

The Warriors used a 15-hit attack led by catcher Tyler Wicks who was 3-for-4 with five RBIs. Chad Gurley and John Wooten both added three hits and an RBI while Walker Gourley and Jeff Hill both had two hits for Eastern Wayne.

Corey Harr pitched a complete game to pick up the win by allowing three runs while scatting 10 hits and struck out one.

"We played good defense behind (Harr)," said Eastern Wayne coach Jabo Fulghum. "He scattered 10 hits, but we made some great defensive plays. It was a great comeback from Tuesday night.

"We redeemed ourselves yesterday."

The Warriors improve to 11-12 and next host Kinston on Friday on Senior Night.

Rosewood completes

sweep of WCDS

Rosewood again found itself in a slugfest against Wayne Country Day and again came out on top 12-6 on Wednesday night.

Earlier this season, the Eagles had doubled up on the Chargers 18-9.

On this night, Rosewood got help from six Charger errors along with seven hits.

Taylor Allen -- who was coming off his terrific pitching performance on Tuesday night against North Johnston -- did damage at the plate by going 1-for-1 with a three-run homer and three walks for Rosewood. Matt Neal added two hits for the Eagles.

Josh Hamilton picked up the win by going 3 2/3 innings and allowing four runs on two hits, walked six and struck out two.

Travis Davis led WCDS with a two-run double. Ryan Ford finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs while Kyle Pender took the loss on the hill.

Wayne Country Day (15-3) next plays today at Kerr-Vance Academy.

Rosewood improves to 14-4 and will next host Spring Creek on Friday.

Aycock stays hot,

defeats Greene Central

SNOW HILL -- Charles B. Aycock stepped out of conference to beat Greene Central 9-5 on Wednesday night.

Thomas Pilkington finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs including a home run while Evan Medford went 2-for-3 and Jordan Carr 2-for-2 for the Golden Falcons.

Kyle Harmon pitched four inning and allowed one run on six hits and struck out three for the win on the mound for Aycock.

Chis Nethercutt took the loss for the Rams who were led by Michael Speedy and Alex Brann who both had two hits apiece.

Greene Central drops to 7-13 overall while Aycock improves to 19-3.

Both teams return to the diamond on Friday when the Rams host Goldsboro and the Golden Falcons entertain Southern Wayne.

Five-run sixth lifts

Southern Wayne

KENLY -- Southern Wayne scored five runs in the sixth inning to erase a 3-0 deficit and take down North Johnston 5-3 in non-conference action on Wednesday.

Alyssa Bradshaw had the big hit in the inning, a two-run hit while Lynn Grantham and Lindsey Pearsall all had run scoring hits.

Lauren Darden picked up the win in relief of Morgan Davis. Darden threw two innings and allowed one hit, no runs, no walks and stuck out three.

Southern Wayne improves to 20-2 and next travel to Charles B. Aycock on Friday night.

gets back on track

Wayne Christian shook off two-straight losses to defeat Cresset Christian Academy 11-1 in five innings on Wednesday afternoon.

Brittney Sullivan got the win on the mound by striking out 10 of the 17 batters she faced. She gave up one hit to the first batter of the game and then proceeded to shut down Cresset while allowing only three walks the rest of the way.

Cynthia Burroughs recorded a double and Hope Wright went 2-for-3 for the Eagles on the night.

Wayne Christian, now 10-2 overall and 4-0 in conference play, will travel to Rosewood on April 30.

Topsail doubles

up Spring Creek

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Spring Creek dropped a non-conference match-up against Topsail 10-5 on Wednesday.

Ivy Campbell had a home run for the Gators while Paula Webber had two hits.

Casey Coor struck out two for Spring Creek on the mound.

Spring Creek drops to 0-16 and next travels to Rosewood for a Carolina Conference showdown on Friday.

North Lenoir

Rosewood's Rachel McCormick scored a goal and tallied two assists to help the Eagles to a 5-2 win over North Lenoir on Wednesday. Francesca Verceles-Zara, Mary Jo Moore, Kathryn Seymour and Alex Lea also found the back of the net for goals for Rosewood.

Sasha Holeman and Jordan Hudson scored goals for the Hawks.

Rosewood improves to 8-4 (5-2) and next hosts Tarboro today.

Wayne Christian

stretches lead

Wayne Christian stretched their lead in the Carolina Christian Conference to 43 strokes over Cresset with two conference matches left by recording a team score of 307 on Wednesday afternoon.

The Eagles bested five other schools including Cresset (317), Cape Fear (333), Community (344), Trinity (367) and North Wood (399) to improve to a perfect 20-0 in CCC play and 24-2 overall.

Eric Williams lead the way this week at Keith Hills Country Club with a 75. Matt Davis and Hayden Gardner both shot 76 for the Eagles.

Rounding out the rest of the scores, Clark Rose shot an 81, Taylor Gardner a 82 and Matt Rouse finished with a 104.

Wayne Christian next takes the course on April 30 at Community.

W. Country Day

beats Kerr-Vance

HENDERSON -- Wayne Country Day collected five of six singles points and turned back Kerr-Vance Academy 6-3 in a Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference match Tuesday afternoon.

The Chargers picked up singles wins from Russell Turner, Byron Bryan, Kevin Martel, George Mayo and Luxman Srikantha. Mayo-Srikantha prevailed in doubles. The Spartans grabbed one singles and two doubles matches.

Wayne Country Day (7-1 overall, 3-1 CPIC) visits Greenfield today.

Greene Central

outscores D.H. Conley

Greene Central took care of D.H. Conley's ninth grade team by winning 15-11 on Wednesday.

Josh Taylor finished 3-for-5 with an RBI while Johnathan Nethercutt added three hits, two RBIs and two doubles for the Rams. Ross Johnson and Ben Caraway also contributed two hits each.

Nethercutt also picked up the win on the mound for Greene Central.

The Rams improve to 7-11 (1-4) and next play at Tarboro on May 1.

Middle Schools

Eastern Wayne soccer 3, Norwayne 0 -- Sydney Potter recorded the clean sheet in goal by tallying 10 saves in Eastern Wayne's win over Norwayne. Pam Diaz, Lauren Breindel and Miller Delbridge contributed goals for the Warriors. Eastern Wayne improves to 4-0 while Norwayne drops to 1-2. Norwayne plays again on May 1 when it hosts Grantham while Eastern Wayne returns to action on May 9 when it also hosts Grantham.
