KINSTON -- K-Tribe manager Mike Sarbaugh's birthday party was spoiled as the Lynchburg Hillcats beat the Kinston Indians 6-3 in an early morning game Wednesday at Grainger Stadium.
The bats for both teams awoke early in the 11 a.m. start as Lynchburg took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first as Steven Pearce hit his Carolina League-leading seventh home run.
The K-Tribe got one run back in the bottom of the first when Brian Finegan scored on a sacrifice fly from Josh Rodriguez. Kinston tied the game in the third when Nathan Panther hit a solo home run.
Lynchburg took the lead right back in the top of the fourth inning on a solo home run by Jason Delaney. Lynchburg's Brian Peterson would score later in the inning on a two-out double by Dan Schwartzbauer, giving the Hillcats a 4-2 lead.
The K-Tribe's Jose Constanza added an RBI single in the fourth, but that's where the Indians' scoring ended.
With Lynchburg leading 6-3 and two on in the bottom of the eighth inning, the K-Tribe's Wes Hodges drove a ball deep to right, but Hillcat right fielder Brad Corley made a catch against the wall to end the inning.
Ryan Edell (1-1) took the loss for the K-Tribe while Derek Hankins (3-0) picked up the win for Lynchburg. Matt Swanson notched his third save of the season for the Hillcats.
The K-Tribe (9-7) finishes up the four-game series with Lynchburg (7-8) today at historic Grainger Stadium. Kinston's Kevin Dixon will take the mound at 7 p.m.
