WILSON -- The depth that the Eastern Wayne girl's team displayed during regular-season meets proved crucial during the 2007 Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference track and field championships Tuesday afternoon.
The Warriors had two competitors place among the top six in 15 of 18 contested events and accumulated 166 points. They also dominated the relay portion of the six-team meet, which was contested on the Hunt High track.
Kinston finished second with 109 points, followed by Hunt with 104. C.B. Aycock, which claimed the 3,200 relay crown, collected 64 points. Wilson Beddingfield (55 points) and Southern Wayne (44) rounded out the scoring.
Eugenia Baker, Noelle Kelly and Richelle Butler picked up individual wins for Eastern Wayne. Baker captured the 200 dash, Kelly dominated the 400 run and Butler easily took the shot put.
Coach Marvin Bowman's team won the 400-, 800- and 1,600-meter relays.
Southern Wayne's Ebony Darden triumphed in the high jump. Aycock's winning quartet in the relay were Megan Hales, Chantel Gaines, Crystal Lewis and Jordan Stackle.
Beddingfield's Latoya Farmer was named most outstanding performer during the meet.
On the boy's side, Hunt tallied points in all but three events and claimed its first-ever track title in the program's 29-year history. The host Warriors out-pointed Eastern Wayne 159-123, while Kinston posted a third-place score of 97.
Beddingfield (86 points), C.B. Aycock (81) and Southern Wayne (7) completed the team scoring.
Garrick Dawson secured Eastern Wayne's lone individual win with a first-place effort in the 200-meter dash. Coach Steve Moats' Warriors won the 400-, 800- and 1,600-meter relays.
The Golden Falcons' Cameron George and Daniel Pennington triumphed in the pole vault and 400-meter run, respectively. Teammate Montez Ham took an ECC title in the long jump.
Hunt's Jonas Dewald was named the meet's MOP.
