CLAYTON -- Bradley Taylor's seventh-inning home run broke a 3-3 tie and lifted Charles B. Aycock to a 4-3 come-from-behind win over Clayton and gave longtime head coach Charles Davis his 300th career victory.

Taylor's fourth home run of the year capped a three-run rally that erased a 3-1 Clayton lead heading into the sixth inning.

Kyle Harmon picked up his first win of the season to improve to 1-1 by allowing no runs on one hit, while striking out one in two innings.

Will Edgerton, Thomas Pilkington and Harmon all contributed a hit for the Golden Falcons.

Aycock improves to 16-3 overall and will next travel to face Wilson Hunt on Friday.

Eastern Wayne

drops two games

Eastern Wayne dropped its second straight game after falling to Wilmington New Hanover 7-4 on Wednesday night.

Walker Gourley allowed two runs on two hits, walked three and struck out one in three innings to suffer the loss.

Gourley led the Warriors at the plate by going 2-for-4.

On Tuesday, the Warriors tumbled to second place in the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference ranks with a 6-3 loss against Wilson Hunt.

Jackson Frederick and Jose Ponce led Eastern Wayne's offense with two hits apiece. John Wooten suffered the pitching loss.

"They out-pitched us, out-hit us and out-played us," said Eastern Wayne head coach Jabo Fulghum.

The Warriors (9-11 overall, 5-2 ECC) next faces Wilson Beddingfield on Friday.

Powell's homer

leads Saints

DUDLEY -- Byron Powell's two-run homer helped lift Southern Wayne to a 5-3 victory over West Craven on Wednesday night.

Powell also picked up the victory on the mound by throwing four innings and allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits and walked two.

Tyler Edwards recorded the save by striking out two in the seventh inning.

At the plate, Brady Wiggins, Garrett Barfield and Scott Holloman all tallied a hit for the Saints.

Southern Wayne improves to 8-11 overall and next travels to Kinston on Friday in a ECC match-up.

WCDS sweeps

Spring Creek

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Wayne Country Day escaped Spring Creek with a hard fought 8-7 victory on Wednesday night.

The victory by the Chargers was their second this season over the Gators.

Wayne Count Day used a potent hitting attack that saw every starter record a hit as they combined to tally 12 on the night.

Kevin Herring and Trent Langston both had two hits and two RBIs to lead the Chargers while Sam Steed finished 2-for-3. Ryan Ford, Travis Davis, Cory Roberts, and Jack Scott all had run scoring hits.

Spring Creek nearly mounted a comeback in the bottom of the seventh when they loaded the bases against Herring.

Davis came entered and, following a walk to Ray Grady, he was able to strikeout the final hitter and preserve the victory for WCDS.

The Chargers improve to 15-1 overall and next faces Greenfield on Friday.

Darden, Saints

blank North Lenoir

LaGRANGE -- Lauren Darden put together another terrific performance as she held North Lenoir scoreless in Southern Wayne's 2-0 win on Wednesday night.

The sophomore right-hander allow just three hits and walked none while striking out eight in her complete game performance.

At the plate, Alyssa Bradshaw finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored while Rachel Reynolds, Morgan Davis and Lynn Grantham all recorded a hit.

Connor Jordan suffered the loss for North Lenoir as she allowed two runs on five hits while striking out five in seven innings.

Kayla Sutton was 2-for-3 to lead the Hawks.

North Lenoir falls to 10-5 (2-1) while Southern Wayne improves to 17-2 (6-1).

The Hawks next face Green Central while Southern Wayne takes on Kinston on Friday.

Tennis

Wayne Christian

bests Trinity

Wayne Christian recorded a 6-3 win over Trinity on Wednesday afternoon.

Wayne Christian's top seed Taylor Gray defeated Ben Luther 8-2 to lead the way for the Eagles.

Matt Ralph, Daniel Glover, Kenneth Giordano and Matt Thompson all added singles wins for WCS.

The Eagles improve to 5-4 (3-0) on the season.

Rosewood tops

Ayden Grifton

Rosewood's Daniel Ellis put on another strong performance as he topped A.J. Lewis of Ayden Grifton to lead the Eagles to a 6-3 win on Wednesday afternoon.

Trevor Morris, J.P. Cummins and Drew Kriegger all recorded singles victories for the Eagles.

The tandems of Ellis/Morris and Cummins/Kriegger picked up doubles win for Rosewood.

The Eagles improve to 5-5 (3-1) and will next travel to North Johnston on Monday.

Hawg Breath

Bass Club

FALLS LAKE -- The tandem of Ray Burrell-John Walsh finished first in the recent Hawg Breath Bass Club fishing tournament contested at Falls Lake. Burrell also caught the big fish of the day.

The duo Eric Worzalla-Curtis Mozingo settled for runner-up honors. John Edwards claimed third, followed by the twosome of Bill and Gayle Thompson.

The next tournament is April 28 at Shearon Harris.

Rosewood sweeps

Carolina 1-A meet

Rosewood's boys seized first place in all 18 contested events and the girls prevailed in 14 events during their Carolina 1-A Conference meet against county rival Spring Creek.

Chris Holmes took three individual events, while teammates Clarence Toran, Matt Lassiter, Chris Holmes, Bradly Mullens, Casey Conerly and Devon Bennett emerged double winners during the Eagles' 141-2 win.

Cameron Lowe seized the 800-meter run.

Rosewood swept the relays.

Ashley Summerville, Sade Davis and Jamie Andrews combined to grab six individual crowns on the girls' side. Teammates Jasmine Montgomery, Erica Murray, Olivia Neal and Casey Binda each picked up one win.

The Eagles swept the relays.

Spring Creek received first-place times or distances from Melanique DeVeaux and Tasha Whitfield.

past South Central

GREENVILLE -- Colby Murphy picked up medalist honors and led Greene Central to a 340-343 win over South Central at Brook Valley Country Club on Wednesday afternoon.

Other scorers for the Rams included Josh Morris (83), Josh Ribeiro (88) and Blake Sutton (90).

Greene Central improves to 27-6 (17-3) on the season.

C.B. Aycock piles up

the runs in two wins

PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock swung the bats well in two victories in the last two days.

On Wednesday night, the Golden Falcons blasted Greene Central 13-6.

Greg Champion was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate to lead Aycock. Jesse Randolph finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs and Josh Martin tallied two hits and two RBIs for the Golden Falcons while Anderson Barnes added two hits and a triple.

Randolph picked up the win by allowing three runs on five hits, walked one and struck out five in six innings of work.

On Tuesday afternoon, nine players collected at least one hit apiece in the Golden Falcons' 21-4 win over Eastern Carolina 3-A rival Kinston.

David Gurganus emerged the winning pitcher. Jordan Quinn, Eric Dubose and Greg Champion made relief appearances on the mound.

C.B. Aycock improves to 9-6 overall.

Eagles defeat

Grace Christian

Stephen Gallagher threw a complete game and provided three hits offensively during Wayne Christian's 8-2, non-conference win over Grace Christian.

Chase Darden and Jordan Crouthamel added three hits apiece, while Tyler Mooring supplied two hits. Ryan Cooke cranked out a double.

Wayne Christian (4-3 overall) travels to Cape Fear Christian on Friday.

Middle Schools

Brogden Baseball 19, Greenwood 13 -- Jesus Sandoval finished a perfect 6-for-6 at the plate with six RBIs to lead Brogden over Greenwood. Jarman Holmes and Kevin Liscomb both added two hits apiece for Brogden. Holmes was victorious on the mound to improve to 3-1. Brogden (3-6) host Dillard today.
