Eastern Wayne ends two-year skid on ECC softball scene

The streak is over.

Eastern Wayne ended two-plus seasons of frustration on the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference softball scene with a 3-1 victory over Wilson Hunt on Tuesday evening.

Freshman right-hander Lani Fricks scattered five hits and helped the Warriors claim their first league win in 20-plus tries. Fricks fanned three Hunt batters and walked four in a complete-game effort.

Eastern Wayne (1-13 overall, 1-6 ECC) parlayed four hits and a walk into a three-run, fourth-inning rally against Hunt right-hander Brittany Farmer. Brianna Williams emerged Eastern Wayne's top batter with two hits and an RBI. Fricks, Meghan Pittman (RBI), Lindsey Frederick, Carrie Adams, Casey Mitchell each added a base hit.

Eastern Wayne entertains Wilson Beddingfield at 7 p.m. Friday.

North Duplin

snaps 8-game skid

CALYPSO -- Five North Duplin players combined for 10 hits in North Duplin's 11-1, five-inning conquest of Carolina 1-A Conference rival Spring Creek. The Rebels (5-8 overall) snapped an eight-game losing streak and collected their first league win in five tries this season.

Jodie Williamson (RBI), Elizabeth Lane (RBI), Kristin Jones (RBI), Jessica Pridgen (RBI) and Julie Ivey cranked out two hits apiece. Williamson and Ivey combined for three stolen bases.

Brittney Carr and Casey Pate each supplied a single, while Sarah Jackson added an RBI. Pridgen, a left-hander, retired 10 of 16 Gators she faced on strikeouts and yielded one hit. Spring Creek remained winless in 12 outings.

Aycock's Jordan

hurls no-hitter

PIKEVILLE -- Left-hander Emily Jordan threw a no-hitter and recorded 10 strikeouts in Charles B. Aycock's 6-0 victory over Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference foe Kinston.

Jordan improved to 7-1 on the mound and the Golden Falcons (13-5 overall) remained perfect in seven ECC contests this season. Brittany Ford batted 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Jasmine Dobbin contributed one hit and two RBI. Jordan, Heather Farmer (two RBI) and Julia Lancaster (RBI) delivered one hit apiece.

Aycock entertains Greene Central today at 7 p.m.

FARMVILLE -- Greene Central pounded out 11 hits and nipped Farmville Central 4-3 in Eastern Plains 2-A Conference play on Tuesday afternoon.

Stacie Wade (RBI), Sarah Ribeiro (RBI) and Chelsea Tyndall led the Rams' hit parade with two singles apiece.

Elizabeth Webb posted eight strikeouts and allowed three runs on six hits in a complete-game effort.

The Rams (8-7 overall) improved to 2-1 in the EPC.

Golden Falcons

no-hit Vikings

PIKEVILLE -- Grant Sasser and Kyle Harmon combined for a no-hitter and C.B. Aycock blitzed Kinston 9-0 in their Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference contest Tuesday evening. Sasser fanned 12 Viking batters and walked five in five-plus innings. Harmon tossed one-plus innings of no-hit, four-strikeout relief.

Catcher Zack Wright slugged his team-leading fifth home run -- a fourth-inning grand slam -- to break open a tight ball game in the fourth inning. The Golden Falcons led 1-0 at the time.

"That was a big hit on his part," said C.B. Aycock head coach Charles Davis.

Wright finished with three hits and three RBI in three at-bats. Bradley Taylor doubled in a 2-for-3 outing. Garrett Davis (two RBI) and Jordan Carr (two RBI) each contributed a hit.

C.B. Aycock (16-3 overall) grabbed sole possession of the ECC at 6-1 and is the guest of Clayton today.

Holloman, Williams

DUDLEY -- Scott Holloman and Jordan Williams provided key sixth-inning singles and Southern Wayne turned back Wilson Beddingfield 6-2 in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference action. Holloman drove in a run and Williams cranked out a two-RBI single as the Saints snapped a two-game losing streak.

Tyler Edwards doubled in three at-bats, while Garrett Barfield supplied a double and two RBI. Chris Massey (RBI) and Byron Powell each contributed a hit.

"We had some better plate appearances and had some good, timely hitting," said Southern Wayne head coach Trae McKee.

Michael Douglass threw a complete game and gave up two first-inning runs. The right-hander scattered six hits and fanned six Bruin batters.

"Michael threw the ball very well," said McKee. "After the first inning, he settled down and had a lot of life on his fastball; able to spot it along with his breaking ball."

Southern Wayne (7-11 overall, 3-4 ECC) entertains West Craven today and travels to Kinston on Friday.

Princeton takes

rematch at home

PRINCETON -- Four days after a heartbreaking, extra-inning loss to its archrival, Princeton shut out Rosewood 5-0 in the Carolina 1-A Conference ranks Tuesday evening. Chris Hinton allowed six hits and struck out six for the Dawgs, who improved to 13-5 overall and remained unbeaten in five league outings this season.

Princeton tagged Rosewood starter Taylor Allen for five runs (four earned) during the first three innings. Colin Parker and Ryan Daughtry (two RBI) banged out two hits apiece, while Adam Nethercutt batted 1-for-3 with two RBI.

Catcher David Smeltzer led the Eagles with two hits, including a double.

Princeton visits county rival Smithfield-Selma today, while Rosewood (11-4, 3-2 Carolina) is the guest of Ayden-Grifton on Friday.

Rebels squeeze

out league win

CALYPSO -- North Duplin overcame three errors and nine walks issued by its pitching staff, and nipped Spring Creek 9-8 on Tuesday evening.

The Rebels (8-5 overall) rose to 2-3 in conference play, while the Gators (8-9) departed with an 0-5 ledger against league opposition.

Doug Lloyd, Chris Graham, Will Lewis and Ryan Killette combined for a four-hitter. Lloyd surrendered one hit, struck out six Gators and walked five in three-plus innings. Graham worked two-thirds of an inning before Lewis took over and provided one-plus inning of one-hit, one-strikeout relief.

Killette threw a perfect seventh to get the save.

Daniel Howell homered and drove in two runs for North Duplin. Lloyd and Lewis (RBI) provided two hits apiece, while Graham batted 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI.

Tim Rogers (RBI), Anthony Brogden (two RBI), Lee Coates and Steven Best (two RBI) had one hit apiece for Spring Creek.

North Duplin entertains North Johnston on Friday and Spring Creek plays host to Wayne Country Day today.

SNOW HILL -- Will McLawhorn provided four hits in Greene Central's 2-1 conquest of Eastern Plains 2-A Conference foe Farmville Central.

Trey Beaman (RBI), Tyler Chase and winning pitcher Josh Elmore contributed two hits apiece.

The Rams (6-11 overall, 2-2 EPC) entertain archrival North Lenoir on Friday.

knocks off Cougars

LaGRANGE -- Eric McLean emerged Goldsboro's top batter with two hits in a 35-2 loss at two-time Class 2-A state champion North Lenoir on Tuesday evening.

The Hawks (15-2) remained unbeaten in four Eastern Plains 2-A Conference outings. The Cougars exited 0-14 overall and 0-4 in the league.

Bryce Grady belted two home runs and collected six RBI in a 5-for-6 outing. Josh Bass smacked a home run and provided five RBI. George Walters batted 3-for-3 with two RBI.

Stephen Pridgen contributed three hits.

North Lenoir right-hander Dewitt Pope allowed two earned runs and fanned 10 Goldsboro batters during his four-inning stint on the mound.

pick up CCC win

Alana Martinez notched two goals and Wayne Christian continued its unbeaten run in Carolina Christian 1-A Conference play with a 4-0 decision over Neuse Baptist Christian.

Allison Gurley and Brooke Norris tallied one goal apiece for the Eagles, who seized their fifth consecutive victory.

Wayne Christian (5-5-1 overall) is the guest of Northwood Temple on Friday.

PIKEVILLE -- C.B. Aycock displayed sibling rivalry at its best during Tuesday afternoon's 7-0 rout of fellow Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference member Kinston.

Amanda and Caroline Schlaeppi (one assist) tallied two goals apiece for the Golden Falcons, who improved to 8-7-1 overall and 5-2 in ECC play. Meanwhile, Lizzie Sodoma (one assist) scored two goals and sister Alicia provided one goal.

Mallory Peacock dished out two assists.

Freshman keeper Courtney Sheeks recorded eight saves and her third career shutout in goal this season.

C.B. Aycock travels to ECC leader Wilson Hunt on Friday.

takes league meet

Clark Rose earned medalist honors with a 75 and paced Wayne Christian to a two-stroke win over Cresset Christian during Tuesday afternoon's Carolina Christian 1-A Conference match at Walnut Creek Country Club.

The Eagles, who carded a four-player total of 323, extended their overall lead to 32 strokes over Cresset with three CCC regular-season tournaments remaining. Cresset finished with a 325, followed by Cape Fear Christian (354), Community Christian (367), Trinity-Raleigh (380) and Northwood (458).

Matt Davis complemented Rose's effort with an 18-hole round of 80. Eric Williams and Taylor Gardner contributed scores of 83 and 85, respectively. Hayden Gardner and Andrew Radford also participated.

PIKEVILLE -- Betty Jean Gurley emerged the game-of-the-week winner during weekly play at Lane Tree Golf Course.

Mary Morris seized play-of-the-day accolades during weekly tournament play at Walnut Creek Country Club.

PIKEVILLE -- C.B. Aycock triumphed in five contested matches and earned three forfeit points in an 8-1, Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference win over Kinston on Tuesday afternoon.

Blake Vail, Addison Westbrook and Blake Cooper combined to lose just two games in three singles matches. Vail-Westbrook and Ben Nichols-Cooper prevailed in doubles.

Nichols and Dylan Quinn each picked up a forfeit in singles. Kyle Clark-Rawad Alawar collected a forfeit at No. 3 doubles for the Golden Falcons.

C.B. Aycock (10-7 overall, 6-1 ECC) entertains Greene Central today.

stops Greenfield

Unbeaten Wayne Country Day opened its Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference season with a 6-3 victory over perennial power Greenfield on Tuesday afternoon.

The Chargers received singles wins from Russell Turner, Kevin Martell, George Mayo and Luxman Srikantha. Wilson-Byron Bryan and Turner-Martell each seized a doubles point.

Wayne Country Day (7-0 overall) continues CPIC play Thursday at Faith Christian-Rocky Mount.

Rosewood upends

rival Spring Creek

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Trevor Morris and Drew Kriger each earned key singles wins and Rosewood edged archrival Spring Creek 5-4 in Carolina 1-A Conference play Tuesday.

Morris, the Eagles' No. 2 seed, fended off 10 match points and defeated Brandon Strickland 6-7 (7), 7-6 (10), 10-8. Kriger dropped the opening set against Aaron Dunmire, but rebounded for a 4-6, 6-2, 10-6 win.

"That's the way our year has been," said Spring Creek head coach Robert Jones. "We just can't pull out a close one."

Rosewood's top seed, Daniel Ellis, didn't lose a game in his straight-set win over Daniel Correll. Meanwhile, Spring Creek received singles wins from Daniel Richter, Alex Dunmire and Colby Strickland.

The Eagles' Ellis-Morris and J.P. Cummins-Kriger sealed the road win with doubles wins. Aaron Dunmire-Strickland won at No. 3 doubles for the Gators.

Rosewood (4-5 overall, 2-1 Carolina) visits Ayden-Grifton today, while Spring Creek (1-7, 1-1) goes to North Johnston.
