Wayne Country Day rallies, defeats Faith Christian-RM

HOBGOOD -- Trent Langston delivered the game-winning single in the bottom of the seventh inning and No. 1-ranked Wayne Country Day edged Faith Christian-Rocky Mount 11-10 in the title game of the Hobgood Invitational on Saturday evening.

Langston's hit capped a three-run rally for the Chargers, who seized their 11th consecutive win and improved to 14-1 overall.

Kyle Pender got hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Pender stole third and both runners scored on Sam Steed's double.

Tied at 10-10, pinch-hitter Cole Davis moved Steed to third with a sacrifice bunt.

"Cole did his job,"said WCDS head coach Michael Taylor.

After two intentional walks to Travis Davis and Kevin Herring, Langston -- 0-for-3 at that point -- smacks a single up the middle against a drawn-in infield.

The Chargers overcame seven errors.

Davis (five strikeouts) claimed the pitching win in relief of starter Pender, who lasted one-plus innings.

Steed finished the day 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI. Davis contributed two hits and three RBI. Herring batted 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Pender chipped in two hits and an RBI.

Wayne Country Day turned back Harrells Christian, the No. 1-ranked 2-A team, by a 7-2 count on Friday afternoon.

Ryan Ford's RBI single and Kevin Herring's two-RBI double accounted for the Chargers' 3-0 advantage after one inning. The Crusaders pulled within 3-2 in the fifth inning, but WCDS answered with a four-run uprising.

The Chargers sent nine batters to the plate and capitalized on Davis' two-RBI double. Langston legged out a squeeze bunt to score Ford. Joseph Cha added an RBI groundout for the final margin.

Langston scattered three hits and fanned four Harrells batters in a four-inning stint. Davis provided three innings of two-strikeout relief.

"Langston and Davis did a great job on the mound," said Taylor. "Rayn did a great job behind the plate with Langston. Scoring those three runs in the first inning was a big factor and my guys got more relaxed.

"We got the timely hits when we needed them. It was a great win for our team and a great win for our program."

Wayne Country Day travels to Spring Creek on Wednesday.

Softball

C.B. Aycock seizes tourney title

ANGIER -- Julia Lancaster connected on the game-winning hit in the ninth inning and Charles B. Aycock nipped Smithfield-Selma 2-1 on Saturday afternoon.

Jasmine Dobbin scored on the play and finished the game with a double in four at-bats.

Left-handed hurler Emily Jordan allowed four hits and struck out nine SSS batters. However, the Golden Falcons offered Jordan little run support by stranding nine base runners.

C.B. Aycock compounded its troubles with a three-error outing defensively.

"We were fortunate to win, but at the same time, it was a very gutsy performance by Emily to hang in there that long and pitch the way she did," said Golden Falcons head coach David West.

The victory set up a championship-round meeting against tournament host Harnett Central. The game was not reported by press time.

Lancaster threw a one-hit shutout as C.B. Aycock stopped Erwin Triton 4-0 in opening-round play. The senior right-hander fanned nine Hawks in a complete-game effort.

The Golden Falcons broke the game open with a four-run surge in the fourth inning. Jordan delivered a two-RBI, bases-loaded double. Stevie Savage added an RBI single and the final run occurred via a passed ball.

C.B. Aycock is 12-4 overall.

W. Christian remains unbeaten

Traci Davis threw a one-hitter and posted 15 strikeouts in Wayne Christian's 5-0, non-conference victory over Union Grove on Saturday morning.

Davis yielded four walks and earned her sixth victory in as many starts in the pitcher's circle.

The Eagles (7-0 overall) parlayed a walk, two hits, a fielder's choice and error into a four-run first inning. Davis singled home Carly Hightower in the fifth.

Wayne Christian entertains Faith Christian-Rocky Mount at 4:30 p.m. Monday.

Christopher leads Faith Christian

Jennifer Christopher recorded eight strikeouts on the mound and provided three hits offensively in Faith Christian's 9-2, non-region victory over Union Grove on Friday afternoon.

Renee Provencal and Brittany Dail added two hits apiece.

The Conquerors (6-3 overall) entertain Liberty Christian-Durham on Monday. Game time is 4 p.m.

PIKEVILLE -- Ruth Edgerton emerged the game-of-the-week winner during weekly tournament play at Lane Tree Golf Course.

Betty Jean Gurley captured low net and low putts.

McCarthy collects ace at GMGC

Cory McCarthy recorded the third ace of his career while playing a round with his brother, Kyle, at Goldsboro Municipal Golf Course.

McCarthy aced the par-3, 207-yard No. 7 hole with a 3-iron.
