Eastern Wayne girls dominate ECC triangular meet

WILSON -- Fresh off its Wayne County championship on Monday, the Eastern Wayne women's track team continued its dominance on the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference scene.

Eastern Wayne bested Wilson Beddingfield and Kinston in a triangular meet at Beddingfield. The Warriors piled up 77 points, followed by the host Bruins with 46 and Kinston 42.

Eugena Baker recorded wins in the 100- and 200-meter dashes to lead the Warriors. Tierra Campbell also placed first in the high jump, Shannon Rouse took the top spot in the 3,200 meters and Alicia Artis was the winner in the 400 meters for Eastern Wayne.

The 800- and 1,600-meter relay teams also prevailed.

Eastern Wayne (16-1 overall, 12-0 ECC) returns to action Apr. 19 at Beddingfield.

Gators still seek

first league win

SEVEN SPRINGS -- North Johnston scored twice in the second inning and coasted past Spring Creek 5-1 in Carolina 1-A Conference play Wednesday evening.

Alex Casey led the Gators with two hits, including a double. Josh Gammon, Timothy Rogers, Lee Coates and Dontay Boseman tallied one hit apiece.

Rogers suffered the mound loss and surrendered five runs on six hits in a five-inning stint. It was Rogers' first loss in two decisions.

Spring Creek (8-6 overall, 0-4 Carolina) returns plays again Apr. 12 in the Deacon Jones Invitational at Princeton. The Gators oppose Rosewood at 5 p.m.

Tarboro holds off

Rams in EPC 2-A

TARBORO -- Drew Davis emerged the winning pitcher and Tarboro turned back Greene Central 3-1 at Municipal Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

Michael Speedy suffered the pitching loss for the Rams, who dropped to 4-9 overall and 1-2 in the Eastern Plains 2-A Conference. Trey Beaman provided two hits.

Greene Central opposes Lee County in the 2007 George Whitfield Invitational on Saturday at Grainger Stadium. Game time is 1:30 p.m.

Tarboro picked up its second EPC win three outings.

WARSAW -- Kendal Wolz provided the game-winning goal in James Kenan's 3-1, non-conference win over Princeton at Bill Taylor Field.

Wolz scored in the final eight minutes of regulation. Kelly Wolz delivered an insurance goal minutes later for the Tigers, of the Super Six 1-A Conference ranks.

Kendal posted a hat trick (three goals), while Alley Covarrubias and Kelly Wolz tallied two goals each in a 10-0 road win at Pender on Monday. Hannah Adams, Jessica Barraza and Yazmin Gutierrez contributed one goal apiece.

BEULAVILLE -- Morgan Davis scattered seven hits in a complete-game effort and Southern Wayne dismantled East Duplin 9-0 on Wednesday evening.

Brianna Lofton batted 1-for-5 and drove in three runs for the Saints. Teammates Alyssa Bradshaw and Rachel Reynolds collected two RBI apiece.

The Saints (14-2 overall) entertain county rival Eastern Wayne today.

SNOW HILL -- Greene Central pounded out a season-high 22 hits and destroyed Tarboro 16-0 on Wednesday evening in Eastern Plains 2-A Conference play.

Stacey Wade led the Rams' hit parade with two hits, including a triple. Teammate Jessica Moore earned the mound victory with two perfect innings and three strikeouts.

Greene Central, the reigning EPC tournament queen, improved to 5-6 overall and evened its EPC ledger at 1-1.

SEVEN SPRINGS -- North Johnston tallied a combined 13 runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings; and blanked Spring Creek 13-0 on Wednesday evening.

Six different Gators had one hit.

Clayton cools off

Golden Falcons

CLAYTON -- Clayton took four of six singles matches versus visiting Charles B. Aycock on Wednesday afternoon to win 6-3.

The Golden Falcons' Blake Vail defeated Corey Cooper 6-1, 6-1 and Addison Westbrook followed with another victory. Vail-Westbrook also triumphed in doubles.

On Tuesday, C.B. Aycock blanked county rival Southern Wayne 9-0 in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play.

The Golden Falcons received singles wins from Vail, Westbrook, Ben Evans, Blake Cooper, Ben Nichols and Dylan Quinn.

C.B. Aycock (8-7 overall, 4-1 ECC) travels to Wilson Beddingfield today.

Unbeaten WCDS

upends RM Academy

ROCKY MOUNT -- In a back-and-forth match, Wayne Country Day got a tie-breaking doubles win by the tandem of George Mayo and Luxman Srikantha to defeat Rocky Mount Academy 5-4.

In singles play, WCDS got wins by Russell Turner, Kevin Martel and Srikantha.

The Chargers (5-0 overall) travel to Spring Creek today.

Warrior netters

fall to J.H. Rose

Eastern Wayne dropped its home match to J.H. Rose 7-2 on Wednesday afternoon.

Drew Jackson recorded the lone singles win for the Warriors as he defeated Matt Gay 7-4, 7-6, 6-1.

The combo of Jared Stone and Jackson then beat Pateak Singla and Gay 8-5 in doubles action.

Eastern Wayne steps back into Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play today at county rival Southern Wayne.

W. Christian pulls

out CCC victory

Wayne Christian pulled out a 5-4 victory on Wednesday afternoon over Cresset of Durham.

After falling behind 2-0 after the first two matches, the Eagles took the next four singles matches to pull out the victory.

Third seed Daniel Glover got things going as he defeated Joe Meade 8-1. Other singles winners for the Eagles included Kenneth Giordano, Matthew Thompson and Dylon Smith.

Wayne Christian remained unbeaten in two CCC matches and boosted its overall record to 4-4. The Eagles play again Apr. 17 at home against CCC rival Trinity Academy of Raleigh.

North Johnston gets

past Rosewood

Rosewood suffered a 5-4 loss against North Johnston on Wednesday afternoon.

Daniel Ellis defeated fellow top seed Nacho Oliveros 6-1, 6-3 for the Eagles and second-seeded Trevor Morris beat Jeff Littleton to get Rosewood off to a 2-0 lead.

North Johnston took three of the next four singles matches, and added two doubles points in the Carolina 1-A Conference win.

Drew Kriger had the other singles win for Rosewood and the tandem of J.P. Cummins and Kriger recorded the Eagles lone doubles victory.

Rosewood dropped to 3-5 overall and 1-1 in Carolina Conference play.

GREENVILLE -- Josh Elmore shot a 75 to come away with medalist honors for Greene Central in a six-team Eastern Plains 2-A Conference match held at Ironwood Golf Course.

North Lenoir shot a team best 313 while Greene Central finished second with a 317. Farmville Central (347), Tarboro (370), North Pitt (401) and Goldsboro (428) rounded out the team scores.

The young Cougars continue to improve as they were led by Michael Thevenin and Obadiah Speight.

"I'm very proud of our golfers that are putting in the extra time to practice and improve," said Goldsboro coach Al Southerland, whose team shot a 530 in its first match. "I'm looking forward to better improvement between now and the end of the year."

The next EPC tournament is scheduled for Apr. 16 at Cotton Valley Country Club in Tarboro.

Seventh-inning rally

lifts Southern Wayne

PIKEVILLE -- Southern Wayne overcame a 9-5 deficit in the seventh inning and defeated Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference foe Charles B. Aycock 11-9 in eight innings on Wednesday.

After going up 5-2, Southern Wayne fell behind thanks to a seven-run outburst by Aycock in the sixth inning before the dramatic comeback.

Joe Otellio finished 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBI, while Brice Rose finished 2-for-3 for the Saints.

Ray Velazquez picked up the victory on the mound while Eric Dubose suffered the loss for the Golden Falcons.

Southern Wayne (3-12 overall, 2-2 ECC) entertains Eastern Wayne today.

Greene Central

doubles up Tarboro

SNOW HILL -- Chris Manning was 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI to lead the Greene Central Rams to a 6-3 win over Tarboro on Wednesday afternoon.

Jasper Jones picked up the win on the mound for the Rams.

Greene Central (6-7 overall, 1-1 EPC) travels to Farmville Central on Apr. 17.
