Evans-Quinn helps CBA preserve ECC shutout in tennis

PIKEVILLE -- C.B. Aycock's No. 2 doubles of Ben Evans-Dylan Quinn rallied from a one-game deficit and helped the Golden Falcons preserve a 9-0 shutout over Wilson Hunt on Tuesday afternoon.

Evans-Quinn led 5-2, but allowed the Warriors' Alex Baskervill-Justin Tew to rally for a 5-5 tie. Baskervill-Tew led 6-5 and 7-6 before Evans-Quinn earned a 9-7 victory.

The Golden Falcons (7-5 overall) remained unbeaten in three Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference outings.

Aycock received straight-set singles wins from Quinn, Nichols, Blake Vail, Addison Westbrook, Ben Evans and Blake Cooper. Vail trailed 5-4 and love-30 on serve in the opening set, but turned back the Warriors' Drew Calvert 7-5, 6-4.

WILSON -- Defending Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference regular-season swept the singles and doubles in a 9-0 rout of Wilson Beddingfield, and remained unbeaten in three league matches this season.

The Warriors claimed their 12th consecutive conference victory and face league co-leader C.B. Aycock in a first-place showdown on Thursday. Singles play is scheduled for 4 p.m. on the Wayne Community College courts.

Top-seeded Jared Stone, Drew Jackson, Ben Wines, Christian Pfuhl, David Benton and Eric Barnes each supplied a straight-set singles win. The same group combined for three doubles victories.

David Wilson, Russell Turner, Byron Bryan, George Mayo, Luxman Srikantha and Tanner Pate each claimed a straight-set singles victory. Wilson-Bryan and Srikantha-Pate each prevailed in doubles.

Wayne Country Day (4-0 overall) travels to Rocky Mount Academy next Tuesday.

EPC 2-A victory

SNOW HILL -- Greene Central triumphed in two tiebreakers during singles play and cruised past Eastern Plains 2-A rival North Lenoir 9-0 on the Snow Hill Tennis Complex courts Tuesday afternoon.

Top-seeded Travis Moore outlasted the Hawks' Taylor Holmes 7-6 (5), 6-1, while third-seeded teammate Trey Cash upended Ryan Kramer 6-2, 5-7, 10-6. The Rams also received straight-set singles wins from Banks Nimmo, Spencer Dail, James Kersey and Andrew Harrison.

The same group combined for three doubles points.

"We did not play our best match today, but we were able to bare down and win some tight sets," said Greene Central head coach Brad Sauls. "Banks played exceptionally well today. He was hitting his groundstrokes with good consistency and power."

Greene Central (8-3 overall) improved to 2-1 in EPC play and is the guest of Rosewood today.

PIKEVILLE -- Wilson Hunt's Alex Calvert posted a natural hat trick (three straight goals) in a 3-1, Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference victory over C.B. Aycock.

The Warriors (7-2 overall) seized sole possession of the ECC at 3-0. The Golden Falcons, directed by first-year head Tom Zietlow, fell to 5-3-1 overall and 2-1 against league opposition.

Calvert scored twice in the opening half and completed her three-goal outing in the second half.

Lizzie Sodoma provided Aycock's lone goal off Caroline Schlaeppi's assist.

Each team had 18 shots on goal. Golden Falcon keeper Courtney Sheeks recorded 15 saves.

C.B. Aycock continues a stretch of four games in five days at home Thursday against North Lenoir.

WILSON -- Seniors Natalie Taylor and Sam Frazer notched two goals apiece and Eastern Wayne throttled Wilson Beddingfield 6-0 in their Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference battle Tuesday afternoon.

The teams battled to a scoreless tie at halftime.

Taylor connected on an unassisted, 20-yard shot two minutes into the second half. She added her second goal in the 71st minute off Kasie Edwards' assist. Frazer supplied goals in the 67th and 78th minutes off assists from Edwards and Carol Reiner, respectively.

Edwards booted a 16-yard chip shot over Bruin keeper Cameron Liner in the 46th minute.

Warrior keepers Danielle Daniels and Brittany Spence combined for the shutout in goal. Kelsey Griffith played solid defense against the Bruins' Lindsey DeRatt and held the senior scoreless and shot-less during the 80-minute contest.

Eastern Wayne (4-6 overall) improved to 2-1 on the ECC scene and entertains county archrival C.B. Aycock at 7 p.m. Friday.

KINSTON -- Georgia Crow collected two goals, but it wasn't enough as Wayne Country Day suffered a 3-2, non-conference defeat at Arendell-Parrott Academy on Tuesday evening.

Jennie Mostellar, Rebecca Hill and Monty Aiken tallied one goal apiece. Mostellar, Hill and Kellie DeVane each posted an assist.

Wayne Country Day (4-2 overall) opens its Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference schedule at home Thursday against Kerr-Vance Academy. Parrott improved to 6-1-1 overall.

SW's Darden hurls

first-ever no-hitter

DUDLEY -- Lauren Darden threw the first-ever no-hitter in Southern Wayne's fast-pitch history -- a 4-0 decision over Kinston on Tuesday afternoon.

Darden recorded 12 strikeouts and faced two batters over the minimum (21) in a complete-game effort. The sophomore right-hander collected her 10th mound win in 11 tries, and earned her 6th shutout.

The Saints (12-1 overall) remained tied with county rival C.B. Aycock atop the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference standings at 3-0.

Lead-off batter Brianna Lofton, Meredith Davis and Cassandra Jones notched one hit apiece for Southern Wayne. Lofton stole two bases, giving her a county-leading 19 for the season.

The Saints travel to Wilson Hunt on Friday.

Bruins' Cooke

WILSON -- Pitt Community College signee Ana Cooke recorded seven strikeouts and threw the fourth no-hitter of her career in a 6-0 conquest of Eastern Wayne on Tuesday afternoon.

Cooke faced two batters over the minimum during the seven-inning, Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference affair. Beddingfield (6-2) picked up its first league win of the season in three tries.

Lani Fricks endured the mound loss for the Warriors. The right-hander surrendered five runs (two earned) on four hits and three walks during a five-inning stint.

Carrie Adams threw one inning in relief.

Eastern Wayne (0-9 overall, 0-3 ECC) travels to North Lenoir today and entertains defending ECC champion C.B. Aycock on Friday.

KENLY -- North Duplin's Casey Pate provided a two-RBI single in the seventh inning, but North Johnston escaped 6-5 in the Carolina 1-A Conference opener for both teams Tuesday afternoon.

Pate was left stranded at third as the Rebels (4-5 overall) suffered their fifth consecutive loss. Jenny Coley provided a two-RBI double in the second, which tied the game at 2-2.

Left-handed hurler Jessica Pridgen, who threw a complete game, fanned seven Panther batters, but allowed six runs (three earned) on 11 hits.

Casey Creech led North Johnston (5-6, 1-0 Carolina) with four hits in four plate appearances. Whitney Parrish and Stephanie Norris delivered two hits apiece, while right-hander Jessica Narron earned the mound win.

North Johnston entertains Southern Nash today, while North Duplin continues conference play Thursday at Princeton.

Rosewood gets

Haile Meadows threw four consecutive innings of shutout ball and Rosewood staged a come-from-behind, 4-3 victory over Ayden-Grifton on Tuesday evening. The Chargers led 3-0 until the Eagles tied the game at 3-3 in the fourth.

UNC Pembroke signee Courtney Hill paced Rosewood's attack with two hits. Meadows, Christina Bruton, Jessica Price, Aubrey Reinhard, Jennifer Hall and Missy Bailey contributed one hit apiece.

Meadows threw a three-hitter and fanned 10 Ayden-Grifton batters in a complete-game effort.

Rosewood (4-6 overall, 1-0 Carolina) travels to defending conference champion North Johnston on Friday.

FAYETTEVILLE -- Is it official?

Wayne Country Day coach Michael Taylor is perusing the rulebook and bending umpires' ears after a wild conclusion to Tuesday's 18-0, non-conference outing at Trinity Christian.

When seventh-grader Cole Davis delivered a pinch-hit, RBI single in the third inning, the Trinity coach walked to the plate and said he forfeited the rest of the game. The umpire told Taylor the game was official at that point.

"I've never been involved in anything like that," said Taylor.

The Chargers, ranked No. 1 in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A poll, banged out 11 hits in the 21/2-inning contest. Travis Davis (three RBI) just missed hitting for the cycle with a single, double and triple. Jack Scott doubled in a 2-for-3, three-RBI outing.

Cameron Ford batted 2-for-3 with a double.

Kyle Pender threw a one-hitter and struck out three Trinity batters.

DUDLEY -- Garrett Barfield, Scott Holloman and Doogie Niemond spearheaded a fourth-inning uprising during Southern Wayne's 6-3 victory over Eastern Carolina 3-A rival Kinston.

The trio combined for three RBI in the Saints' three-run outburst, which broke a 2-2 deadlock. Each team added single runs in the later innings.

Barfield (three RBI), Chris Massey (RBI) and Tyler Edwards banged out two hits apiece for Southern Wayne.

Senior Sterling Grice earned his first mound win three tries. The right-hander scattered four hits and fanned four Viking batters in a complete-game effort.

Hawks build

on EPC 2-A lead

KINSTON -- Thomas Faulkner carded a medal-winning round of 2-under par 69 and led North Lenoir to a season-low 299 in the second Eastern Plains 2-A Conference tournament of the season.

The Hawks own a 17-stroke lead over defending EPC champion Greene Central. Farmville Central ended up third with 333, followed by Tarboro High (341), North Pitt (404) and Goldsboro High (479) on the Falling Creek Country Club links.

Will Norville complemented Faulkner with a 1-over par 72. Logan O'Neal finished with a 3-over 74 and Dustin Downey provided an 84.

Colby Murphy paced Greene Central with a 3-over 74. Blake Sutton (80), Josh Elmore (82) and Josh Riberiro (82) rounded out the Rams' four-player total.

Goldsboro High's top two scorers were Obadiah Speight and Michael Thevenin.

"We feel that our golf team is definitely headed in the right direction and we look forward to the remainder of our season," said Goldsboro head coach Al Sutherland.

All six EPC teams return to action Monday at Happy Valley Country Club in Wilson.

win four-team meet

PIKEVILLE -- C.B. Aycock earned eight individual victories and prevailed in two relays during a four-team, non-conference meet contested Monday afternoon at Hardy Talton Stadium.

The Golden Falcons emerged the top team, followed by James Kenan, Goldsboro and Wayne Christian. Team scores were not submitted.

Megan Hales recorded first-place efforts in the triple jump (27 feet, 6 inches), 3,200-meter run (14 minutes, 24 seconds) and 1,600-meter run. Crystal Lewis emerged a double winner in the high jump (4-8) and 300 hurdles (52.82 seconds).

Aycock also received first-place finishes from Chantel Gaines (400) and Cara Sanders (800). Gaines and Sanders each participated on the winning 1,600- and 3,200-meter relays. Lewis and Artice Felder competed in the 1,600 relay, while Hales and Gaines ran legs on the 3,200 relay.

WILSON -- Anderson Barnes and Jesse Randolph provided two hits apiece in C.B. Aycock's 9-5 loss at Eastern Carolina 3-A foe Wilson Hunt.

Randolph doubled and Eric Dubose supplied an RBI for the Golden Falcons, who fell to 4-3 overall and 1-1 against ECC opposition. Dubose threw two scoreless innings in relief of Randolph, who started and took the loss.

HOBGOOD -- Kayla Kennedy and Carly Hightower cranked out two hits apiece in Wayne Christian's 9-5, non-conference loss at Hobgood Academy on Tuesday afternoon.

Kennedy also tripled for the Eagles, who suffered their first loss in four games.

Pitchers Sara McCullum and Kennedy combined for four strikeouts and six hits, but also issued 11 walks to the Raiders. Hobgood parlayed four hits and five walks into seven runs during the first two innings.

Middle schools

Eastern Wayne baseball 15, Grantham 9 (8 inn.) -- Tyler Brown and Zack Mozingo cranked out two hits apiece for the Warriors, while Lamar Best doubled. Teammate Tyler Brown turned double plays in the seventh and eighth innings. Grantham Mel Winn doubled in a three-performance and Taylor Brock added a double in a two-hit effort. Will Broadwell contributed two hits. Eastern Wayne (5-0 overall) entertains Brogden on Thursday.
