WILSON -- Charles B. Aycock has a score of 642 after two matches to lead the pack in the Eastern Carolina Conference held at Willow Springs. Host Wilson Hunt trails by two strokes.

Eastern Wayne is in third with an overall score of 654 followed by Wilson Beddingfield (658), Southern Wayne (739) and Kinston (742).

Kyle Ham from Eastern Wayne and Charles Cranford of Aycock tied for medalist honors by shooting 75.

Other top scores from the Golden Falcons included Heyward Jeffreys who shot a 79 and Will Vinson who finished with a 81.

The Warriors got a 77 from Matthew Ellis and an 80 from Mark Whitley.

Andy Moore led Southern Wayne with an 87 while Jay Kornegay shot a 91.

to No. 2-ranked team

Top-ranked in NCISAA 1-A, Wayne Christian, fell to second-ranked Kerr Vance 328-336 at Walnut Creek on Monday afternoon.

For the Eagles, Matt Davis finished one shot off the pace with an 80. Clark Rose and Taylor Gardner both shot an 86.

"Nobody played up to their standard today," said Wayne Christian coach Clarence Rose. "I think everybody was a little uptight and, because of that, Wayne Christian posted the highest score that I've seen them shoot in the past two years. It's going to come down to four teams that have a shot at winning the state tournament this year."

Eagles take two

from Golden Falcons

Wayne Christian completed a doubleheader sweep by defeating Charles B. Aycock 2-0 and 2-1.

In Game 1, Wayne Christian needed only two runs in the first inning to come away with the win. In the inning, both Traci Davis and Cynthia Burroughs doubled to left and Kayla Kennedy singled to record the only runs of the game.

Cynthia Burroughs picked up the win with a complete-game shutout. Burroughs gave just two hits and walked one while striking out 11.

In Game 2, Davis pitched her third no-hitter of the season while striking out eight.

Michele Krug hit a line drive over second base to score the winning run in the seventh inning for the Eagles.

Wayne Christian improves to 3-0 and will play Hobgood Academy today.

Wayne Christian fell 9-2 to Hobgood on Monday evening.

Chase Darden, Stephen Gallagher, Chandler Harrell and Kyle Sasser all tallied hits for the Eagles.

Wayne Christian (2-3) will next travel to Cape Fear Christian on Thursday.

No contest as Aycock

blows-out Kinston

PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock destroyed visiting Kinston 22-1 on Monday afternoon.

Nicholas McGee led the Golden Falcons by going 4-for-4 with five RBIs. David Gurganus, Anderson Barnes and Tyler Ruffin all added two hits while Greg Champion finished 2-for-2 with a home run.

Jordan Quinn picked up the victory on the mound for Aycock.

The Golden Falcons move to 4-2 overall and will next play at Wilson Hunt today.

WCDS' Warren

takes USTA event

NEW BERN -- Emily Warren, a freshman at Wayne Country Day, claimed the Girls' 15-16 singles title during the 6th annual New Bern Junior Open.

Warren rallied for a 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory over Asheville's Taylor Theodossiou in the championship match. It was Warren's fifth USTA singles crown.

Middle Schools

Norwayne baseball 12, Greenwood 1 -- Aaron Champion, John Taylor, Nick Walker and Tyler Farmer all contributed two hits apiece to lead Norwayne to the victory over Greenwood. Aaron Champion picked up the win on the mound. Norwayne improves to 7-0 (3-0) and next travels to face Greenwood again on April 2.
