Lancaster (Shelly) delivers game-winning hit

PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock put together another seventh-inning rally Thursday evening and turned back Clayton, 2-1, on the Golden Falcons' diamond.

Emily Jordan drew a one-out walk. Heather Farmer, Jordan's courtesy runner, scored when senior Shelly Lancaster doubled off the center field wall. The Golden Falcons, who dropped an eight-inning decision 24 hours earlier against D.H. Conley, evened their non-conference worksheet at 2-2 overall.

Lancaster, Leigh Smith and Rusti Talton each had one hit for Aycock.

Jordan (2-0) fanned seven Comet batters and scattered five hits in a complete-game effort. Courtney Applewhite's lead-off bunt single led to Clayton's first-inning run.

Lancaster tied the game at 1-1 in the fifth when she scored on a Comet throwing error. The contest remained deadlocked until Lancaster delivered her game-winning hit in the seventh.

Sarah Jackson, despite striking out 14 Aycock batters, endured the pitching loss for Clayton. She walked two and surrendered one earned run in seven innings of work.

C.B. Aycock travels to D.H. Conley today. Game time is 6:30 p.m.

Southern Wayne

shuts out Rams

DUDLEY -- Brianna Lofton tripled and stole two bases in Southern Wayne's 7-0, non-conference triumph over Greene Central on Thursday afternoon.

Lofton concluded the day with three hits in four at-bats, two stolen bases and two runs scored. Alyssa Bradshaw and Rachel Reynolds each contributed an RBI.

Morgan Davis supplied an RBI double and Haley Fail batted 1-for-1 with an RBI.

Southern Wayne right-hander Lauren Darden registered nine strikeouts and allowed two hits in four innings on the mound. Davis tossed three innings of one-hit, four-strikeout relief.

Stacy Wade led the Rams' offense with two hits.

The Saints (5-0 overall) entertain South Lenoir at 4:30 p.m. today. Greene Central (2-3 overall) is the guest of Kinston next Tuesday.

Eastern Wayne

bangs out nine hits

FARMVILLE -- Eastern Wayne cranked out a season-high nine hits, but couldn't overcome crucial fourth-inning miscues in a 10-4, non-conference loss at Farmville Central.

The Warriors led 2-0 through 31/2 innings before the Jaguars capitalized on fielding errors and chased right-handed starter Lisa Hollingsworth from the mound. Miranda Smith finished in the pitching circle as Eastern Wayne suffered its fourth loss in four outings.

Farmville Central plated just two earned runs, including a home run.

Lindsey Frederick (two RBI), Casey Mitchell and Caitlin Turner supplied two hits apiece for the Warriors. Eastern Wayne is the guest of Princeton today.

Rosewood falters

late at home

Visiting Farmville Central plated eight runs in the final two innings and cruised past Rosewood 11-4 in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon.

Brittany Talbott slugged a home run for the Jaguars, who collected 16 hits against Eagle right-handers Haile Meadows and Aubrey Reinhard.

Reinhard and Jessica Price led Rosewood (1-4 overall) with two hits apiece.

PIKEVILLE -- Garrett Davis and Connor Narron each belted a second-inning, grand-slam home run in C.B. Aycock's 25-7, non-conference thrashing of Clayton on Thursday.

Davis and Narron, a freshman shortstop, finished the day with two hits apiece and a combined nine RBI.

Aycock produced a season-high 15 hits and had 11 batters to record one or more hits in the 41/2-inning contest. The Golden Falcons did not bat in the fifth due to the 10-run mercy rule.

"We came out yesterday more focus and we decided to swing the bats," said Aycock head coach Charles Davis, whose team plated 11 runs in the second and fourth innings. "Maybe we woke up a sleeping giant. I don't know."

Will Edgerton added two hits, including a double, and an RBI in three plate appearances. Jesse Randolph delivered two hits and three RBI.

Right-hander Brandon Price started and earned his first mound win of the season. The senior allowed three earned runs on four hits and struck out two in three innings of work.

Kyle Harmon threw the fourth and fifth, and allowed four runs (one earned) on three hits.

edges J.H. Rose

John Wooten supplied the game-winning hit and Eastern Wayne nipped perennial Class 4-A power J.H. Rose 2-1 on the New Hope diamond Thursday afternoon.

The Warriors denied the Rampants' bid for their 700th win with head coach Ronald Vincent. Rose suffered its second consecutive defeat and exited 2-2 overall.

The Rampants claimed a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning on a passed ball. Eastern Wayne collected the equalizer in its half of the sixth on Walker Gourley's infield RBI single.

Chad Gurley started the Warrior ninth with a lead-off single and after Gourley's sacrifice, scampered home on Wooten's double. Wooten finished the day with two hits in four at-bats. Gourley and Gurley supplied one hit apiece.

Gourley threw two shutout innings and seized the pitching win in relief of right-handed starter Taylor Sutton. Sutton yielded one unearned run on two hits.

"The kids have played their hearts out this week," said Eastern Wayne head coach Jabo Fulghum. "The kids have a passion for the game right now; they're hungry. You can't coach that.

"The guys are working hard and working together, and that makes a big difference."

Eastern Wayne (2-2 overall) entertains Wilson Fike on Monday.

WARSAW -- Donald Lewis collected Goldsboro's lone hit in a 32-2, non-conference loss at James Kenan on Thursday afternoon. Dante Love took the pitching loss.

Eagles escape

in eight innings

Freshman Matt Neal rapped the game-winning, two-RBI hit in the bottom of the eighth inning and Rosewood turned back Midway 9-8 on a chilly Thursday evening.

Neal's hit came with the bases loaded.

Garrett Howell led the Eagles with two hits and two RBI in four at-bats. Robert Franks, Chris Hare, Cody Richards and David Smeltzer each contributed one hit.

Richards picked up the mound win in relief of Taylor Allen.

Rosewood (3-1 overall) entertains Hobbton next Tuesday.

SNOW HILL -- C.B. Aycock triumphed in five of six contested singles matches and rolled past North Lenoir 8-1 on the Snow Hill Tennis Complex courts Thursday afternoon.

Blake Vail, Addison Westbrook, Ben Evans, Blake Cooper and Dylan Quinn each earned a singles win for the Golden Falcons. Evans, the No. 3 seed, edged the Hawks' Ryan Kramer in a third-set tiebreaker.

Vail-Westbrook, Evans-Quinn, Cooper-Ben Nichols each collected a doubles win.

Steven Warren picked up the Hawks' lone singles point.

WILSON -- Mark Whitley seized medalist honors with an even-par 72 and paced Wilson Beddingfield to a 323-334, non-conference victory over Greene Central at Wedgewood Golf Course.

Matthew Ellis complemented Whitley's effort with a 77.

Colby Murphy emerged the Rams' top scorer with a 76. Blake Sutton added an 82, while Josh Elmore provided an 83. Josh Robario rounded out Greene Central's four-player total with a 93.

The Rams (3-1 overall) open their Class 2-A Eastern Plains Conference schedule Monday at Goldsboro Municipal Golf Course.

Warriors end up

MACCLESFIELD -- Kyle Ham fired a team-low, 18-hole round of 77 and paced Eastern Wayne finished second behind SouthWest Edgecombe in a three-team, non-conference meet at Maccripine Country Club.

The host Cougars edged the Warriors 320-330 on the par-71 layout. Tarboro ended up a distant third at 398.

Eric Huetter fired an 83 behind Ham, while Nick Barrow turned in an 84. Carter Walchli completed Eastern Wayne's scoring with an 86.

SouthWest's Hunter Wishall grabbed medalist honors with a 73.

Golf Association

Linda Watson claimed low-putt honors among first flight competitors in an Eastern Carolina Ladies Golf Association tournament at Lane Tree Golf Course.

Donna Addams took first low gross in the second flight. Betty Jean Gurley grabbed second low gross in the third flight. Fourth-flight finishers were Shelley Leder (first low gross), Theresa Merritt (first low net) and Bunkie Parker (second low net).

Warriors sweep

ECC 3-A meet

WILSON -- Chris Jones emerged a double winner and Eastern Wayne captured six individual events overall in a three-team, Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference meet at Wilson Beddingfield.

Jones took the triple jump (37 feet, 81/2 inches) and high jump (5-8) as the Warriors upended the host Bruins 74-54. C.B. Aycock wound up third with 52 points.

Dwight Ulmer and Will White finished first in the 110 and 300 hurdles, respectively. The Warriors also prevailed in the 3,200- and 800-meter relays.

C.B. Aycock's Carson Sasser posted wins in the 800 run and 1,600 run. Teammates Nik Frederick (3,200), Montez Ham (long jump), Cameron George (pole vault) and Pennington (400) each supplied an individual victory.

The Golden Falcons picked up the 1,600 relay win.

pick up ECC win

WILSON -- Eugenia Baker claimed a pair of individual victories and ran the anchor leg on two winning relays as Eastern Wayne swept a three-team, Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference meet Thursday afternoon.

Baker, an outstanding sprinter, took the 200 dash in 26.92 seconds and 100 dash in 13.05 seconds. She participated on the top-finishing 800 and 1,600 relays.

The Warriors amassed 91 points, compared to the Bruins' 41-point output. C.B. Aycock settled for third with 36 points.

Richelle Butler won the shot put with a throw of 29 feet, one inch. Noelle Kelly (400), Alicia Stevens (300 hurdles) and Yasmine Washington (800) each registered a first-place finish.

Kelly participated on the 800 and 1,600 relays, while Washington ran the opening leg on the 1,600 relay. Eastern Wayne's foursome of Sarah Schley, Shannon Rouse, Alicia Artis and Kelly Gregorcyk seized first in the 3,200 relay.

The Warriors placed second in the 400 relay.

C.B. Aycock's individual results were not reported as of press time.

sweeps Saints

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Aaron Dunmire, Drew Pierce and David Galloway each claimed two singles victories as Spring Creek swept a pair of non-conference matches against county rival Southern Wayne this week.

The Gators defeated the Saints 7-2 on Wednesday and posted a 9-0 shutout on Thursday. Spring Creek's Douglas Boltinhouse, Andrew Hicks, Colby Strickland and Roland Rengifo each claimed a singles win on Wednesday.

Southern Wayne's Benny Segura and Kobi Hood emerged victorious in singles on Wednesday.

Spring Creek head coach Robert Jones mixed up the lineup for doubles play each day.

Carmel propels

Aycock comeback

CLAYTON -- Jeffrey Carmel belted a two-out, game-winning hit in the top of the seventh inning in C.B. Aycock's come-from-behind, 9-7 non-conference victory over Clayton.

Carmel, hitless in his previous two at-bats, drove in two runs as the Golden Falcons climbed ahead of the Comets 8-7 in the final inning. Aycock head coach Trevor Pilkington said his team "scratched for another run after that."

Josh Martin contributed a team-leading three hits in three plate appearances. Anderson Barnes batted 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Martin picked up the pitching win in relief.

Middle schools

Grantham baseball 16, Greenwood 3 -- Will Bunch batted 2-for-3 with one RBI and Keith Jones doubled with three RBI for the Bulldogs. Will Broadwell added two hits and four RBI. Taylor Brock collected two hits and four RBI, while Terran Fields finished the day 2-for-3. Broadwell struck out 11 T-Bird batters and yielded one hit. Bunch and Jeremy Taylor combined for two innings of four-strikeout, one-hit relief. Grantham (1-0 overall) travels to Norwayne on March 15.

Norwayne softball 32, Mount Olive 0 -- Ashley Shingleton took the pitching win. Ivey Hartsell had three hits. Rachel Jordan, Jessica Hare and Shingleton each had two hits. Shingleton emerged the winning pitcher in Monday's season-opening, 14-0 win over Rosewood. The Cobras (2-0 overall) travel to Dillard on Monday.

Norwayne baseball 15, Mount Olive 0 -- Christian Pate, Bryant Stafford and Aaron Champion combined for the one-hit shutout. Travis Musselman and Mick Walter had two hits apiece for the Cobras. Norwayne (2-0 overall) visits Dillard on Monday.
