Goldsboro High senior Daquan Joyner has been selected to play for the North Carolina squad in the annual N.C.-S.C. All-Star men's basketball game.

The showcase game, which pits the top 10 players from the Carolinas, is scheduled for March 18 at 6:30 p.m. in Rock Hill, S.C.

Joyner led the Cougars to a 15-13 record and second-round appearance in the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 2-A playoffs. He averaged 16.3 points, 9.9 rebounds and 5.1 blocks per game.

"We're very proud of Daquan," said GHS head coach Randy Jordan. "It's a great honor for him, our program and our school."

The 6-foot-7 Joyner has signed with East Carolina and is a McDonald's All-America nominee.

West going dancing

ELIZABETH CITY -- Former Southern Wayne shooting guard Brian West is going to the "big dance."

West and his Elizabeth City State teammates stunned Virginia Union 63-60 in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association men's championship game Saturday evening. The Vikings seized the automatic bid to the NCAA Division II South Atlantic Regional, which begins Saturday at Augusta State (Ga.) University.

ECSU is the No. 8 seed and will face top-seeded Augusta State.

Virginia Union, the 2005 national runner-up, had its string of three consecutive CIAA championships snapped. The Panthers received the No. 2 seed for the South Atlantic Regional and will play seventh-seeded Lander (S.C.) University.

West played in 31 games and started seven for the Vikings. He emerged the team's leader in free throw percentage (85.2) and assists (78).

ECSU claimed its first CIAA crown since 1981.

Bryant's

season ends

SALISBURY -- Clintoria Bryant tallied 10 points and dished out five assists in Livingstone's season-ending, 58-56 loss against St. Paul's (Va.) University in the women's CIAA Tournament.

Bryant, who starred at Goldsboro High, concluded the year as the team's second-leading scorer with 9.5 points per game. The junior transfer from Louisburg College averaged 2.4 rebounds and 1.8 assists.

The Blue Bears finished 12-16 overall.

Joby Hawn Cup

THOMASVILLE -- Mount Olive College ranks 10th overall in the Joby Hawn Cup standings upon conclusion of winter sports competition in the NCAA Division II Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference.

The Trojans have 39.5 points after the men's basketball team tied Queens University of Charlotte for second place in the regular-season standings.

Limestone (S.C.) University and Pfeiffer University, the reigning Cup holder, are tied for first with 55.5 points. Lees-McRae is third with 53.5, followed by Queens (51.5) and St. Andrews (51).

The Hawn Cup annually recognizes the top athletics program in the CVAC.
