Davis, Eagles open season with lopsided victory

Traci Davis recorded 11 strikeouts and provided two hits in Wayne Christian's season-opening, 17-1 thrashing of Hobgood Academy on Thursday afternoon.

Davis yielded two hits in the non-conference affair, which was shortened to 41/2 innings due to the 10-run mercy rule. Right-hander Cynthia Burroughs finished off the Raiders with three strikeouts in the fifth inning.

Davis doubled in four at-bats, while Burroughs tripled twice and doubled once in four plate appearances. Brittany Sullivan and Kayla Kennedy also tripled for the Eagles.

"(We) looked very good today," said Wayne Christian coach Roger Longwell. "We still have some things to work on, but I believe this is going to be a very good year for us."

Wayne Christian (1-0 overall) returns to action March 12 at Northwood Temple in the Carolina Christian 1-A Conference opener for both teams.

Dawgs collect

non-league win

Princeton benefited from four Eastern Wayne errors and picked up a 6-1, non-conference victory Thursday afternoon in New Hope.

Warrior right-hander Lani Fricks posted one strikeout, walked three and surrendered seven hits on the mound.

Casey Mitchell, Caitlin Turner, Carrie Adams and Jessie Santiago each had one hit for Eastern Wayne.

The Warriors (0-2 overall) entertain South Central on Monday.

Gators still

seek first win

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Jordan Coor and Sarah McCollom each had one hit in Spring Creek's 13-0, non-conference loss against Midway on Thursday afternoon.

Officials called the contest after five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.

Gator pitchers Lisa Mozingo and Casey Coor combined for three strikeouts.

Spring Creek (0-2 overall) entertains Union on Monday.

PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock head coach Charles Davis announced Friday morning that the Golden Falcons' game with Jamestown Ragsdale has been moved to 10 a.m. Saturday.

The Impact Baseball Classic contest was originally scheduled for 12:45 p.m. on the Fleming Stadium diamond in Wilson.

Davis said C.B. Aycock (1-0 overall) will play today at Clayton, weather permitting.

Kyle Harrell delivered a third-inning, grand-slam home run and Wayne Christian seized a 7-3, season-opening victory over Hobgood Academy on Thursday afternoon.

Harrell's bases-clearing shot capped the Eagles' third-inning, five-run uprising. Three walks and Adam Brannan's RBI single led to one run before Harrell connected on his first round-tripper of the year.

Brannan emerged the winning pitcher, striking out nine and yielding three hits in a six-inning stint. Doug Johnson provided one inning of two-strikeout relief.

Wayne Christian (1-0 overall) begins defense of its Class 1-A Carolina Christian Conference regular-season title March 12 against Northwood Temple.

LITTLEFIELD -- Greene Central opened its 2007 campaign with a 6-1, non-conference loss against perennial 1-A powerhouse Ayden-Grifton on Thursday afternoon.

Tyler Chase, Alex Brann and Justin Everette each batted 1-for-3 for the Rams.

Michael Speedy endured the mound loss.

Greene Central (0-1 overall) is the guest of Eastern Wayne on Saturday. Game time is 2 p.m.

Rosewood earns

first win of 2007

NEWTON GROVE -- Josh Hamilton banged out two hits and drove in two runs during Rosewood's 6-5, non-conference victory over Hobbton on Thursday afternoon.

Garrett Howell provided one hit and two RBI in four at-bats. Matt Neal doubled in three plate appearances for the Eagles, who evened their worksheet at 1-1 overall.

Taylor Allen yielded no hits and recorded six strikeouts in a four-inning stint en route to the mound win. Cody Richards provided two innings of one-hit, three-strikeout relief. The Wildcats plated four runs (two earned) on no hits against reliever Joel Barber.

Rosewood entertains Farmville Central on Tuesday.

Gryphons slip

past G. Central

ROCKY MOUNT -- Rocky Mount triumphed in two of three singles matches and turned back Greene Central 5-4 in non-conference action at Sunset Park on Thursday afternoon.

The Rams battled the Gryphons to a 3-3 draw after singles. Top-seeded Travis Moore survived a first-set tiebreaker and swept Rocky Mount's Travis Kirkpatrick 7-6 (4), 6-2. Third-seeded Trey Cash and fifth-seeded Andrew Harrison each posted a straight-set win.

"Andrew did a good job of being patient when the match was tight," said Greene Central head coach Brad Sauls. "He has improved a lot in the past couple of weeks and I was glad to see him confident in his singles play."

The third-seeded tandem of Jason Perry-Harrison claimed the Rams' lone doubles point with an 8-5 victory.

"We came very close to winning this match today, but we did not play well on the key points," said Sauls. "Rocky Mount handled the pressure better than we did."

Greene Central nipped Wilson Hunt 5-4 in its season opener on Tuesday.

Second-seeded Banks Nimmo, Cash and Perry each prevailed in their respective singles matches. Cash-Spencer Dail and Harrison-Perry each claimed a doubles win.

The Rams (1-1 overall) entertain Warren County on Monday.

MACCLESFIELD -- Colby Murphy earned medalist honors with a 4-over par 75 and Greene Central edged SouthWest Edgecombe 321-338 on the Maccripine Country Club links Thursday afternoon.

Josh Elmore complemented Murphy with an 18-hole round of 80, followed by Josh Morris with an 81. Blake Sutton rounded out the Rams' four-player total with an 85.

Hunter Wishall emerged the Cougars' low scorer with an 80. Jacob Griffith fired an 83, followed by Jordan Edmundson (85) and Shane Floars (90).

Greene Central (2-0 overall) returns to action Monday afternoon at Ayden Country Club.

KINSTON -- Eastern Wayne's Alicia Stevens collected two individual victories and the Warriors swept the relays in their season-opening, Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference meet contested on the Viking Stadium track Thursday afternoon.

Stevens took the 100 high hurdles in 18.95 seconds and returned to claim the 300 intermediate hurdles event in 56.02 seconds. Her two wins helped the Warriors amass 91.6 points, while host Kinston was second with 38. Southern Wayne rounded out the three-team meet with 14.3 points.

Quanica Allen, Eugenia Baker, Dionne Smith and Brittany McCall comprised the winning 400-meter relay. Allen, Alicia Artis, Noelle Kelly and Eugenia Baker combined for 800-meter relay win.

McCall, Kelly, Artis and Baker picked up the 1,600. Kelly Gregorcyk, Artis, Yasmine Washington and Tiara Campbell led the Warriors to victory in the 3,200 relay.

Washington also won the long jump (13 feet, 7 inches). Richelle Butler claimed first in the shot put (32-1), while Baker picked up first place in the 200-meter dash (26.56 seconds).

Eboni Reid and Jasmine Middleton tied with a Southern Wayne runner for first in the 100-meter dash. All three competitors posted a time of 13.3 seconds.

Eastern Wayne (2-0 overall, 2-0 ECC) travels to Greene Central on Monday.

KINSTON -- Eastern Wayne emerged victorious in 12 of 17 events and captured a three-team, season-opening Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference meet at Viking Stadium on Thursday afternoon.

The Warriors, who swept the relays, piled up 97 points. Kinston accumulated 61 points, while Southern Wayne tallied 13.

Stefan Henshaw posted a height of 9 feet, 0 inches in the pole vault and claimed Eastern Wayne's lone victory in the field events. Kinston took first in the long jump, triple jump, high jump and shot put. The discus was not contested.

Will White (110 hurdles), Dwight Ulmer (100 dash), Tim Wright (1,600 run), Lynwood Dees (300 hurdles), Bryan Coltrane (800 run), Garrick Dawson (200 dash) and Steven Henricks (3,200) each collected an individual victory.

SNOW HILL -- Greene Central opened its 2007 season with a 10-9, non-conference victory over Ayden-Grifton on the James R. Fulghum Athletic Complex diamond Thursday afternoon.

William Bynum led the Rams with three hits in five at-bats. Zach Chase doubled in a 2-for-4 performance. Chris Manning and Steven McDonald combined for five hits.

Bynum claimed the mound win and Jasper Jones earned the save in relief.

Greene Central (1-0 overall) visits Eastern Wayne today.

WASHINGTON -- Autumn Pittman delivered a base-clearing triple in the seventh inning and emerged the winning pitcher in Charles B. Aycock's season-opening, 4-0 win over Washington.

Pittman scattered two hits and fanned 10 Pam Pack batters in a complete-game effort.

Her lone hit broke a scoreless tie and Victoria Benton finished off the scoring with an RBI single.

Haley Stowe doubled for the Pam Pack.

The No. 1 doubles of Taylor Gray-Woody Sasser claimed the match-clinching win in Wayne Christian's season-opening, 5-4 victory over Eastern Wayne at Herman Park.

Gray-Sasser edged the Warriors' Will Kastner-Charlie Umstead 8-6.

Gray, Sasser, Christopher Easom and Matthew Thompson each earned a pro-set (eight-game) win in singles.

Eastern Wayne's Thomas Jackson and Imran Rauf emerged victorious in their respective singles matches. The Warriors' tandems of Jackson-Timothy Parker and Rauf-Sanjee Srikantha prevailed in doubles.
