MOC baseball team swept

SAVANNAH, Ga. -- The Armstrong Atlantic State baseball squad picked up a doubleheader sweep of visiting No. 20-ranked Mount Olive on Sunday afternoon at Pirate Field. AASU pounded out 17 hits in winning game one, 11-5, then scored twice in the bottom of the sixth for a come-from-behind 3-2 win in the nightcap.

The Pirates (3-1) broke open the first game by scoring three runs in the third and fourth innings en route to the victory. Truman Marek led the hit parade with four hits, while Kenny Cail and Brad Bohannon each collected three hits as AASU almost doubled yesterday's hit output in the first game alone. Ross Partee (1-0) went 6 1/3 innings, giving up seven hits and five runs to pick up the win, while Mount Olive starter Weston Curles (0-1) gave up seven hits and four runs -- two earned -- in 2 2/3 innings to take the loss. AASU reliever Nate Herder pitched the final 2 1/3 innings of scoreless ball to pick up his second save.

In the second game, Mount Olive (1-3) started off hot as a leadoff double by David Cooper, a walk to Graham Wooten and a two-run triple by Scott Houin put the Trojans up, 2-0, before an out was recorded. AASU pitching held the Trojans in check the rest of the way, however, and the Pirates plated a single run in the third on Brad Bohannon's groundout RBI, then two runs in the bottom of the sixth on Josh Wilson's RBI single and Marc Noble's RBI groundout. Herder closed out the contest with 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, picking up his second save of the day and third save of the season, and preserving the win for Jeremy Horst (1-0) in relief. Horst hurled 1 2/3 scoreless innings, striking out four, for the win, while Mount Olive starter Darrell Ellis (0-1) was tagged with the loss, giving up all three runs and five hits in 5 1/3 innings pitched.

Cooper led the Trojans on the day with four hits and three runs scored, while Marek finished the day with five hits, including two doubles, in the doubleheader.

Mount Olive is back in action on Friday with a 6 p.m. matchup against GCSU in Florence, S.C.
