Rosewood triumphed in eight of nine contested matches and dispatched county rival Spring Creek 69-11 in the regular-season, dual-team wrestling finale for both teams Wednesday evening.
The Gators claimed an early 11-0 advantage and attempted to spoil the Eagles' Senior Night celebration. Dequan Wright drew a forfeit at 160 pounds and senior Ross Montafia posted a tech fall over fellow 171-pounder T.J. Sprinkle.
The run quickly ended.
Chris Holmes, one of two Rosewood seniors, began a 69-0 run with a forfeit at 189 pounds. J.P. Person gave the Eagles the overall lead for good, 12-11, with a 39-second fall against Josh Rodriguez at 215 pounds.
Heavyweight Trevor Morris picked up a forfeit and junior Olivia Neal dumped the Gators' Daniel Richter 19-3 at 103 pounds. Senior Jim Bish collected career win No. 152 with a first-period fall over Neil O'Hara at 112 pounds.
"(Chris and Jim) are natural leaders," said Rosewood head coach Bill Edmundson. "I'm not at all worried about the type of young men these two will become."
Freshman Luke Davis returned to the mat after a month-long absence and drew a forfeit. The Eagles also got wins from J.D. Baker (125 pounds), Chris Hare (130), Josh Holmes (135), Scott Pate (140), Byron Cavenaugh (145) and Andrew Sass (152). Cavenaugh earned a major decision, while Holmes collected a forfeit.
Rosewood improved to 29-7 overall and tied the Wayne County record for single-season, dual-team victories. C.B. Aycock notched 29 wins a year ago and reached the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 3-A eastern dual-team regional championship.
The Eagles and Gators (9-7 overall) return to action Saturday in the Carolina/Tar-Roanoke/Albemarle/Mid-State 1-A Conference individual tournament at North Johnston.
