Spring Creek boys upset Ayden-Grifton

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Desmund Raiford posted a double-double -- 22 points, 11 rebounds -- and Spring Creek upset Ayden-Grifton 75-67 in Class 1-A Carolina Conference play.

The Gators (6-11 overall) beat the Chargers for the first time in Sonny Kilpatrick's tenure as head coach, and improved to 4-2 overall in the league.

"We are peaking at a good time," said Kilpatrick. "This win is great for us and will hopefully take us down the stretch. It was a great defensive effort by all, but especially Lucas Potter."

Potter blocked three Ayden-Grifton shots.

David Harris added 16 points and three assists. Josh Wright contributed 15 points and five assists, while Kevin Winn chipped in 11.

Ayden-Grifton (13-6 overall) suffered its first loss in seven conference games.

Spring Creek entertains North Johnston today and is the guest of county foe Rosewood on Friday.

Rosewood knocks

off North Johnston

Dennis Jones pumped in 15 points as Rosewood upended North Johnston 47-44 in overtime on the Carolina 1-A Conference scene.

Taylor Allen poured in 11 points for the Eagles, who improved to 4-14 overall and 2-5 in the league.

Rosewood outscored the Panthers 11-9 in overtime.

Princeton turns

back North Duplin

CALYPSO -- Ryan Daughtry converted the game-winning layup with seven seconds left in regulation and Princeton nipped North Duplin 70-68 in Carolina 1-A Conference action.

The Bulldogs (14-7 overall) climbed to 5-2 overall in the league and snapped the Rebels' modest, two-game win streak. North Duplin (2-11 overall) slipped against conference opposition.

Daughtry finished with a double-double -- 16 points, 14 rebounds. Daniel Gerrell and Josh Holmes supplied 16 points apiece, while Josh Barefoot scored 10.

North Duplin's Ryan Killette, who missed a 3-pointer as time expired, led all scorers with 22 points. Chris Graham tallied 16, followed by Terell Midgette and Doug Lloyd with 10 apiece.

Princeton visits county archrival North Johnston on Friday, while North Duplin is the guest of Ayden-Grifton.

Saints collect

ECC home win

DUDLEY -- Jon Hart led three Southern Wayne players in double figures with 18 points in a 73-70 victory over Eastern Carolina 3-A foe Wilson Beddingfield.

Kendrick Thompson provided 16 points and five steals for the Saints, who nearly blew a 20-point lead. Paris Armwood added 10 points and hit key free throws in the fourth quarter to prevent the Bruins' comeback.

"We had a few careless turnovers, but our guys fought through it and played smart towards the end," said Southern Wayne coach Russell Royal. "Armwood and Hart hit some big free throws."

The Saints (9-10 overall, 3-4 ECC) travel to Kinston on Friday.

Kinston cruises

past C.B. Aycock

PIKEVILLE -- Leonard Compton led a balanced scoring attack with eight points in Charles B. Aycock's 68-32 loss against state-ranked Kinston in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play.

Freshman point guard David Gurganus scored seven points and Kendre Reid added four for the Golden Falcons. Michael King chipped in three points.

Curtis Hines paced the Vikings with a game-high 15 points, while teammate Tremaine Miller delivered a 14-point outing. Kinston hit 10 three-pointers in the game and capitalized on 33 Golden Falcon turnovers.

C.B. Aycock (0-21 overall, 0-7 ECC) visits Wilson Hunt on Friday.

Greene Central

gets back on track

TARBORO -- Greene Central rebounded from its first Eastern Plains 2-A Conference loss with a 77-57 thrashing of Tarboro High on Tuesday evening.

The Rams (14-6 overall) improved to 6-1 in the league after enduring a home loss against North Pitt on Friday.

Chevalier Howell led five players in double figures with 19 points. Trey Travis added 17, while Reggie Johnson knocked down 13. Albert Barron and Brandon Sutton each chipped in 10 points.

Greene Central held the Vikings' top scorer, Jontae Sherrod, to 13 points.

Wayne Country Day

ends 3-game skid

Point guard Floronta Wynn finished one rebound shy of a double-double in Wayne Country Day's 67-60, non-conference victory over Wake Christian.

Wynn collected a game-high 30 points and pulled down nine rebounds for the Chargers, who rose to 8-11 overall and snapped a three-game losing streak.

Wayne Country Day trailed by four at halftime, but changed defensive strategies and played efficient in its spread offense in the fourth quarter. Head coach Mike Ellis switched to a box-and-one on Wake Christian's Chris Underwood, who scored 14 first-half points and finished with 17 overall.

The Chargers, once they grabbed the lead, converted 11 free throws out of their spread offense in the final period.

Ajay Fowler contributed 10 points. Jeff Franklin chipped in nine points and five rebounds. Kyle Pender scored seven points. Shadoe Stewart added six points and six rebounds. Senior David Wilson tallied five points and six rebounds.

Wayne Country Day travels to Faith Christian-Rocky Mount next Monday.

routs Mt. Calvary

HOOKERTON -- Faith Christian's defense held Mt. Calvary to single-digit scoring in three quarters and three Conquerors reached double figures in a 78-30 rout Tuesday evening.

Aaron Sladick emerged the Conquerors' top scorer with 23 points and pulled down nine rebounds. T.J. Sasser added 22 points and picked Mt. Calvary for seven steals. Blake Plummer just missed a double-double with 14 points and nine boards.

Taylor Stocks flirted with a double-double in a nine-assist, 12-rebound effort.

Faith Christian (18-1) claimed its 17th consecutive win and remained unbeaten in nine N.C. Christian Schools Association Coastal 2-A region contests.

F. Central earns

regular-season sweep

FARMVILLE -- Tim Kornegay paced Goldsboro High with a game-high 21 points, but it wasn't enough in a 72-56 loss at Eastern Plains 2-A rival Farmville Central.

Tim Hobbs added 10 points for the Cougars.

Terrell Barrett led four Jaguars in double figures with 19 points. Kenyon Tuten added 17, while Kajon Farrow and Kenyon Atkinson provided 12 points apiece.

Goldsboro (12-9 overall, 2-5 EPC) suffered its eighth loss in its last 12 outings.

Girls

Eagles soar

past N. Johnston

Courtney Hill knocked down a team-high 16 points and Rosewood dumped North Johnston 42-26 in Carolina 1-A Conference play Tuesday evening.

The Eagles (10-8 overall) improved to 5-2 against league opposition and dealt the Panthers (14-5) their first loss in six conference outings.

Kasie Braswell added 11 points for Rosewood, which won its 17th conference regular-season game in its last 19 tries. Haile Meadows and Ashley Williams added five points apiece.

Brittany Keene led North Johnston with 12 points.

Rosewood entertains Spring Creek on Friday.

Goldsboro drops

heartbreaker

FARMVILLE -- Farmville Central rallied from a seven-point deficit with three minutes to play and turned back Goldsboro 51-48 in Eastern Plains 2-A Conference action.

"We were playing not to lose instead of playing to win," said Cougars head coach Brandy Smith. "We were worried about losing and not finishing on top. That's going to come with more maturity and playing together."

Danielle Irby led the Cougars with 13 points, while Tiffany Burden contributed 10 points and seven rebounds. Johneisha Maye scored nine points, while senior Carmille Early added eight points and eight rebounds.

Smith said Farmville Central shot 15 of 33 at the free throw line compared to 8 of 14 for Goldsboro.

The Cougars (4-16 overall, 2-5 EPC) entertain North Lenoir on Friday.

Godwin's 3-pointer

lifts Conquerors

HOOKERTON -- Lindsay Godwin nailed the game-winning 3-pointer with 1.4 seconds remaining and Faith Christian edged Mt. Calvary 29-28 in N.C. Christian Schools Association Coastal 2-A region action.

Godwin finished with 10 points for the Conquerors, who improved to 8-8 overall and 4-5 against NCCSA 2-A foes. Alyssa Hill added nine points, nine rebounds and four steals.

Amie Hill contributed six points and 10 rebounds. Kristen Maddox supplied four points, three assists and three steals.

Faith Christian entertains Trinity Christian-Greenville on Thursday.

Bruins get Best

effort in ECC

DUDLEY -- Jean Best pumped in a game-high 19 points and Wilson Beddingfield stopped Southern Wayne 51-34 in the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference ranks Tuesday evening.

Monique Spry added nine points for the Bruins, who claimed their 17th consecutive ECC regular-season win since joining the league a year ago. Latroya Pope chipped in eight points.

Brianna Lofton led a balanced Southern Wayne attack with eight points. Shakoria Clark and Lynneshia Leonard contributed seven points apiece, while Kayla Powell added six.

"I thought we played great defense," said Saints head coach Chuck Crumpler. "It's hard to keep that team right at 50 points. The second quarter they came out with hard defensive pressure, and shut us down."

The Bruins outscored the 17-2 and led 28-11 at halftime.

Southern Wayne (7-12 overall, 0-7 ECC) visits Kinston Friday.

turn back Aycock

PIKEVILLE -- Backcourt mates Jazzmine Lee and Jasmine Dobbin turned in double-figure scoring efforts, but C.B. Aycock dropped a 54-50 decision to Kinston on Tuesday evening.

Lee scored 15 points and Dobbin added 12 for the Golden Falcons, who dipped to 8-13 overall and 3-4 in the ECC.

"It was a combination of a few factors," said Aycock head coach Carrie Reynell. "We missed a lot of shots and we didn't play very good defense. We also didn't execute plays in the end."

Erin Medford added eight points for C.B. Aycock, which is the guest of Wilson Hunt on Friday.

Bulldogs roll

over N. Duplin

CALYPSO -- C.C. Sanders paced Princeton's offense with a team- and game-high 11 points in a 50-30 victory over Carolina 1-A Conference rival North Duplin.

Stephanie Daughtry added eight points for the Dawgs.

Sam Cates led the Rebels with eight points.

North Duplin (1-11 overall) fell to 1-6 in the conference.

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Ayden-Grifton continued its second-half surge up the Carolina 1-A Conference ladder with a 55-33 victory over Spring Creek.

Crystal Williams and Angela Crandell scored 13 points apiece for the Chargers, who improved to 7-14 overall and 4-3 in the league.

Melanique DeVeaux led the Gators and all scorers with 18 points.

Spring Creek (2-15 overall) suffered its fifth consecutive league defeat.

Seth Denlinger scored eight points and Drew Floars added seven in Faith Christian's 40-22 win at Mt. Calvary in N.C. Christian Schools Association Coastal 2-A region action.

The Conquerors held Mt. Calvary to five points in the second half.

Faith Christian improved to 14-1 overall.

PIKEVILLE -- Tyheim Pitt supplied a team-high 17 points and C.B. Aycock upended Kinston 46-39 in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play Tuesday afternoon.

Kyle LaFlamme added 12 points for the Golden Falcons, who improved to 8-13 overall and 4-3 in the ECC. RaJohn Ormond knocked down nine points.

Charlie Ipock and Hanna Kaler knocked down 10 points apiece in a 44-38, non-conference loss against New Life on Monday afternoon.

Kaler pulled down eight rebounds, while Ipock contributed four rebounds, two steals and a blocked shot. Teammate Charity Wright added five points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Wayne Christian slipped to 8-3 overall.

leads Chargers

Katherine Ford, Ellen Elmore and Sterling Coggins scored five points apiece in Wayne Country Day's 28-26 victory over Wake Christian on Tuesday afternoon.

Jessica Lewis added 12 points for the Chargers, who played their final game of the season.

Cougars end

season with win

Demetrio Irby tallied a team-high 22 points and Goldsboro High eased past New Bern 58-53 in its regular-season finale on Tuesday afternoon.

Quantiago Holloman and Michael Thevenin added eight points apiece for the Cougars.

Goldsboro finished 8-8 overall after a 1-7 start.

Northwood Temple 14, Wayne Christian 12 -- Wayne Christian's Britney O'Hara and Katie Isenhower tallied four points apiece, and combined for 10 rebounds in the loss. Brooke Barfield recorded eight steals. The Eagles (4-5 overall) travel to Cape Fear Christian next Monday.
